Chapter 639 I Am Different from You
I blushed and playfully punched him. "You're such a pain."
"Get some rest and take care of yourself," Matthew said with a mischievous grin. I rolled my eyes and reached out to hit him again, but he dodged. Just as we were about to wrap up our conversation, a voice called out, "Matthew?"
Matthew's smile vanished instantly as he turned to see who it was. It was Victoria.
I saw her too. Knowing Matthew's intentions with Victoria, I didn't overthink it, but seeing them together still made me a bit jealous. I thought about closing the door to avoid the sight, but Matthew blocked it with his foot.
"What are you two talking about?" Victoria asked, pretending to be familiar with us. She walked over to Matthew and casually linked her arm with his. Matthew patted her arm and said, "Let go."
"Okay," she replied reluctantly, releasing his arm. Her expression made me chuckle quietly. I glanced at Matthew, wondering what it was about him that made so many great girls fall for him. Victoria was one thing, but there was also Kathie back in Skyhaven. And who knew how many other girls were head over heels for him that I didn't even know about?
Just then, Matthew's phone rang. He looked at Victoria and asked, "Are you here to see Emily? You two chat, I have to take this."
"Emily, don't get too comfortable. I'll win Matthew over eventually," Victoria said coldly after Matthew left to take his call.
I shrugged. Now that I knew Matthew's true feelings, I didn't care what Victoria said. "You don't have to. He's not mine to begin with."
It was the truth. Matthew and I hadn't made anything official, and Carol didn't like me much anyway. So, technically, I wasn't lying.
"Good to see you know your place," Victoria said confidently, flipping her hair. "You saw it today; Matthew and I are the perfect match. From what I understand, he only likes you because you remind him of his ex. Isn't that right?"
I frowned. Sienna had said something similar before, so hearing it from Victoria made me genuinely angry. "So what if it's true? You couldn't even look like his ex if you tried."
"There's nothing to be proud of. I am who I am, not a stand-in for anyone else. That's the difference between you and me," Victoria said with a smug smile. It was almost laughable, but deep down, I started to doubt myself. Could Matthew really see me as just a replacement for Mabella?
Seeing my uncertainty, Victoria seemed pleased. She waved and said, "I'm off to find Matthew. Bye, stand-in."
I watched her leave, humming a tune. It was infuriating, but I also felt a sense of satisfaction. I believed Matthew's heart was with me. What could Victoria possibly get from him? Maybe she'd just end up being used and discarded by Matthew.
It might be unfair to Victoria, but the world wasn't fair. I learned that a long time ago.
That night, Matthew left. He only told me he was leaving when he was already at the airport, about to board the plane. It made me a bit angry. I didn't mind him leaving; I knew how busy he was. But couldn't he have told me before he was about to turn off his phone and take off?
