Chapter 89

Michael was put in a tough position where he had to do everything to protect Landon. He had assumed that working for the agency would just affect him and have nothing to do with Landon, but with the way Jack spoke, it was obvious that it would have everything to do with Landon at last.

"But what if the child chooses a different path in life?" Michael asked. He imagined if it was his own child coming to say that he was now a secret agent and his child, being his grandchild, would also be a secret agent.

He could never accept it. But now things are strained. Landon was no longer an ordinary human. There were no limits to what he could do. At this tender age, he could break glass cups by just holding them.

"The boy doesn't have a choice." Jack said. "These people you talked about will haunt him down. Once they provide him the comfort he needs and teach him how to use his superpowers, he will surely become a tool in their hands."

"And that means that he becomes an enemy to this agency, making him out to be a target."

Michael kept quiet after listening to what Jack had said. Surely, if Landon ever became a target for this agency, he would definitely die. They already know his capabilities. Two, he has seen how ruthless they are towards criminals.

He agreed instantly to the contract, as if he could have had a different choice. They waited until Landon was six years old before they began their training. Michael fired Landon's nanny. He would take Landon to work with him, drop him off at the agency with Martin, and go for his mission.

Whenever he was on break, he would take Landon home with him. Sometimes, he would be on break and still have to drop Landon off at the agency for his training. He did so until Landon had clocked sixteen, then he could find his way to the agency alone. Landon had grown used to his superpowers and also learned how to be secretive about them.

When he was to take a college examination and they needed his fingerprints to assess his identity, they realized that no fingerprint was being recorded.

"Wipe your hands, could you?" The lady said it nicely. She assumed that perhaps because his fingers were wet, they would not recognize him.

"They're dry." Landon said. "It just won't pick. I'm not exactly feeling well. I've been ill for some time."

"Oh." She sighed. Okay, then, I'll just have to use someone else's for yours. But that will require someone else to do it for you as well. Is there someone you'd like to do it for?"

At that point, Landon was quiet. His father was ill and in the hospital. Who else could do it for him? His phone suddenly beeped, and he checked to see who had called; it was Martin.

"Martin, jeez! You're a lifesaver. Please, could you come to the college examination registration center?" Landon asked.

Martin accepted and hurried down there to meet Landon. They used his fingerprints for Landon, and that was when the agency also knew that Landon didn't have a fingerprint. It would be very difficult to identify him at any crime scene.

He smiled; everything they could find about Landon seemed to be appeasing their agency. He helped Landon throughout the registration, and they sent him to college. By the time Landon finished college and returned, he expected to still find his father in the hospital, or at least better.

But to his surprise, even the agency had changed. Martin was the new secretary. He approached the office, a young man ready to start life. He noticed Martin's surprise when he saw him.

"Landon? You have grown into a fine young man! Your father would have been so proud of you if he were here." Martin said.

Landon was struck. Would it have been? If he were here, Elaborate; I don't understand."

"Oh, you have not been told?" Martin was surprised. "How come they did not tell you?"

Before Landon had the chance to answer, the directors sent for him, and he went to answer them. As he sat before them, they began by telling him about some of the dangers surrounding his existence and how his father had contracted with them to keep him safe, but he also had to work for them in return.

Landon was taken aback. "So what about my father? Where is he?"

"Your father is dead, Landon. He died a month ago. We have left the body in the morgue. We are waiting for you to return so that you can organize a proper funeral for him, if you wish."

Landon was annoyed. How come no one deemed it fit to talk to him about his father's demise? Was that why he was unreachable for the last two months? Landon felt his chest constrict in pain, and he nodded twice. He got up and left the directors' office.

Martin was pacing his office when Landon returned. "Hey, how did it go?"

"My father is dead." Landon said. "Why did nobody tell me about it? I want to see him! Take me to him!"

"Calm down, Landon. I recently started working as the secretary here, so I'm not yet sure why they didn't tell you. Maybe they wanted you to finish with your school stuff." Martin shrugged. "Anyway, let's go over the contract again. Although your father has signed one, we need to ensure that you're willing to continue the contract."

Landon nodded absentmindedly. He couldn't believe why his father's death would be hidden from him, yet these people only wanted what would benefit them. Fine, he wasn't going to argue with them anymore. He would do as they say and, if possible, avenge the man who caused him to be in this situation.
