Chapter 87

Landon nodded. His father had indeed told him some stories about how his mother died. He never expected that it was true.

"Continue."

Michael had been a faithful worker for Greg, everything he did, he did it with top-notch honesty and quality, so that Greg soon took pleasure in him. But no matter how hard Greg tried, he could never get Michael to join him in the actual experiment. He always wanted Michael to join him so that he would possibly take over from him, but Michael was too righteous.

"Boss, I have no issues with helping you try out the experiments. But I won't ever do such harm to children. My wife is pregnant and I can already see how hard it is to bring the children into the world." Michael would alway say.

Greg laughed. "Michael, the children are still the same adults you wish to experiment on."

"It's different because they're grown and have lesser risks of dying. Do you know how many deaths we have recorded? It wouldn't take long before the government starts to throw threats to us." Michael said.

Greg laughed even harder. "You're such a righteous man, Michael. I bet it didn't help that your mother chose to name you after an angel."

Michael did not find it funny and he simply walked away. He did not know how else to let Greg know that he was not in support of the children experiments and he would never be in support of it.

One night, he returned home from work to find his wife in mild pain. He hurried over to her and asked her what was wrong.

"I think the baby is coming." She whispered.

"Why didn't you call me?" Michael groaned. "I would have come over earlier. We don't want anything to happen to you or the child. Come on, can you stand?"

She shook her head negatively. Michael could see that she was already losing strength and the weakness was getting to her as her eyes could also barely stay open.

"Come on, stay with me." He pleaded. He quickly bent over and lifted her in his arms, grunting as he did. Of course she had put on more weight, she was heavily pregnant. Yet, he did not waver at all. He struggled to the car and placed her in, carefully. He noticed that her breath was getting shallow.

He quickly took out his phone and dialled the hospital's emergency number.

"My wife is in labour and she seems to be losing strength!" He announced rapidly. "Please prepare a stretcher, I'm bringing her now."

Without waiting for their response, he ended the call and threw the phone to the backseat. He started the cars engines and began to drive as fast as he could do so carefully. Occasionally, he would turn to glance at her and make sure that she was still breathing. Twice, he avoided hitting an oncoming vehicle.

Finally, he arrived at the clinic and his wife was taken into the theatre. He paced the corridors, feeling sweat all over his palm and neck. He sighed and prayed earnestly for his wife to be fine.

After waiting for five excruciatingly long hours, the door finally opened, revealing the doctor who was full of sweat. Michael had this sinking feeling in his chest that seemed to constrict his breath. His eyes glanced to the wall clock and he saw that it was already morning. Which meant he had arrived home too late. He soon began to curse his luck.

Nevertheless, he ran over to the doctor. "Sir, how's my wife?"

"Are you the husband?" The doctor asked, scowling angrily. Michael wondered what might have happened to have the doctor being mad at him.

He nodded eagerly. "How's my wife and child?"

The doctor sighed, shaking his head. "What made you delay so much? Do you know that you could be arrested?"

Arrested? Michael wasn't understanding anything anymore. "Doc, just tell me how they are!"

"They're dead." The doctor announced. "You delayed so much. Your wife was withholding the child from coming out. It weakened her and the child began to suffocate as well. What kept you?"

Michael felt his word turn cold at the words the doctor spent. They're dead... It kept ringing in his ears and his eyes blanked out.

When next he opened them, he found himself in a white room, facing the ceiling. A nurse was administering drugs to him.

"Oh hi, you're awake." She smiled. "You passed out due to shock and the doctor asked me to revive you. You were out for two hours."

Michael didn't say anything. He was going to ask if it was a dream but nothing else could have shocked him to the extent where he passed out except a news like that.

"Are they really dead?" Michael whispered to the nurse. The lady smiled a sad smile at him and he shut his eyes, allowing his tears to flow freely.

"I'm so sorry sir." She said softly. "Things like these happen and I know how painful it is. You'll be fine. Here's your phone, your boss has been calling you."

Michael thanked the nurse and took his phone. He saw many missed calls and when he checked it, he saw that his wife had actually called him severally that night. It was then he remembered that he had worked late with his boss and had placed his phone on silent since he didn't want any distractions. His pain turned to an anger that was kindled against Greg.

He climbed down from the bed, took the drips out and went to see his wife's and child's body before they were buried. He caught a glimpse of the child's face and he smiled a sad smile. He took a picture of it before leaving the clinic.

Upon his arrival at work, Greg hurried him into the lab to begin to check the results of the tests he had done. Michael quietly got in and he saw a young boy of about two years old, laying in the bed. He had been marked already which was a sign that the boy had been experimented on. But that wasn't what had caught his attention. It was the fact that his dead child would have looked exactly like this boy if he was around the same age.
