Chapter 81

Early the next morning, Carly paced the hospital corridor as her father was being attended to. After an hour, the doctor came out and walked towards her and her mother.

"How's he?" Martin asked from behind them. Carly suddenly remembered that Martin was there too.

"He's alright." Phil said. "I've flushed out every trace of the drugs, and he'd be alright in no time."

Carly sighed in relief. She watched her mother follow the doctor to her father's ward, and she sat back in the chair.

Martin sat beside her. "You seem stressed. Are you okay?"

"Huh?" Carly was surprised. She thought Martin was just tough all around and didn't know that he had a soft side to him.

"C'mon, I care about all my agents." Martin said.

Carly nodded. "I'm... I'm very stressed, honestly. I don't wish to exist at this point. My entire childhood expectations for growing up are destroyed. Nothing that I planned to do."

"And do you regret all of it?" Martin asked.

"Yes." Carly answered. "I regret every single decision I take every time. I should have allowed that man to just slit my throat. Surely, help would have come for my father and mother. And even if help did not come, there would be no issue because we would all die together and finally find rest."

Martin chuckled. "There is no such thing as rest, whether in life or death. Only satisfaction."

"What do you mean?"

"I'm an agent, not a superstitious man. Let's leave that aside. What do you think of the people who attacked your family?"

Carly sighed, crossing her arm over her chest. "I think that someone is behind this. Intentionally. Someone is trying to frame my father for a crime he committed, and he doesn't just want my father but the entire family. As if he knew that my father would have told us about it."

"But of course." Martin said. "That's the most reasonable thing to do. Attack the entire family and shut their mouths. At this point, if you guys had servants, they would also be sought after. And that would be worse for you because you don't know what your servants do in their free time."

Carly digested what Martin just told her. She was somewhat grateful that they weren't exactly rich. They would have had so much more trouble.

"Still, I don't understand why this is even happening." Carly said.

Martin nodded. "First, tell me what happened."

Carly took a deep breath. "When I was younger, things were very tough for us at home. Mom didn't have a job, and Dad couldn't get a job either. When he was finally able to get one, he was lucky to land a too-good deal. He always came home, singing praises about his boss. He sounded too good to be true."

"Was he?" Martin asked.

Carly shook her head. "Surprisingly, he was actually that good. It's just that, naturally, when there are good people, there will be bad people jealous of them. That's exactly what happened here. I'm yet to figure out the full story and all, but I'm certain that whoever did that was simply jealous of my father's boss."

"This boss, tell me about him." Martin inquired.

"Well, I don't know that much about him myself. But from what dad used to say and what he told me now, he was a billionaire, and he ran a company. A very successful company. He used to attend so many functions and events, and my dad was his driver, his personal chauffeur. He always let dad return home with his car so that dad wouldn't be late to pick him up in the morning."

"Generous," Martin commented.

Carly nodded. "Well, that aside, dad said so many people used to be so jealous of him and all. But eventually, the jealousy got too much. People started poaching him because his boss treated him very well. It was the night he was paid; he said he was already on his way back home when his boss called him, saying he had an emergency meeting at that time of the night, and he drove back so that he could take him to the company."

"Well, on getting there, there was nobody there. He helped him up and served him light snacks and juice since his secretary and the receptionist weren't around to do that. After that, he left, but then he remembered that he had forgotten the chocolates he had gotten for me and returned to the company. When he took it, he also noticed how eerily quiet the place was and still decided to leave."

"But then he heard whispers and saw some shadows. Curious, he parked the car and cut the headlights. According to him, he didn't know that his camera was recording the video and watching it as well. But when the man was done strangling his boss and turned, their eyes met, and he started his car and drove off, only to be chased by the man."

"I heard that the case was reopened, and that's why those people attacked us. The man's son thinks that my father killed his father. And that's why he's after us."

Martin was silent. He didn't know what to say to Carly. But it was a very serious issue anyway. Sighing, he nodded his head. "It's alright; I think that we would just send some agents to keep them safe. When they're fine, they will escort them to a safe house, and they will be on guard for them. You, however, need to return to the agency. You need to stay at a place where you can easily be reached."

"Besides, the more you stay there with them, the more chances there are of them being attacked, you know what I mean?"

Remember, your ex-boyfriend and Santino are still on the loose. Until we find them, you all have to remain discreet."

Carly nodded. This wasn't the life she planned for. But it was what came for her, and she had to now accept it.
