Chapter 80

"Your boss... is dead?" Martha stuttered. "James..."

James shook his head. "I know. I feel extremely bad about it, dear." He said. His eyes got teary, and he pulled Martha in for a hug to try and comfort himself. Martha was stiff and pulled him away from her.

James looked up at her in surprise. "What's the matter, Martha? Please, I need this."

"Did you do it?" Martha asked outright.

James gaped. "Martha, how can you even say that?"

"What did you want me to think? What did you just want me to think?" Martha demanded. "You say you're so sad that your boss died."

James sighed. "No. That's not what I meant. I meant that I witnessed him die. I witnessed him being killed. And what's more?"

Martha sighed deeply. She pulled him in for the hug he had previously wanted. "I'm sorry for doubting you; I just got scared by the way you were acting. I'm sorry, can we sit and discuss?"

James and Martha went to the room where Carly was, and they sat down on the bed while Carly slept. James shook his head.

"The reason I feel this bad is because my boss has been nothing but good to me. So much so that his enemies were starting to feel envious and offered me better offers so that I could leave him. But no matter what happened, I refused them, and that made him love me more."

"My boss," James continued. "He treated me just like a brother. And another reason we are being chased is because I somehow managed to capture it on camera and was caught. The man who strangled the boss also saw me take a video of the scene, and that's why he's after me."

"James!" Martha scolded. "You should not have done that! You should not have done that at all."

"It wasn't intentional. I did not do it intentionally. I didn't mean to record it, but when I noticed I had recorded it, I wanted to just drive away, but at the same time, the man turned and our eyes met." James explained.

Martha groaned. "He saw your face? Did he see your face to know that it was you?"

"Yes," James answered. "And I know who it is."

"Who?" Martha asked.

"It's Gary, his assistant." James said. "I just don't know why he would do such a thing. I have no idea why Gary would kill the man, but..."

"That's alright; we can't exactly explain it either. But this means that before dawn, we need to be away from here and far away from the city."

James sighed, sitting opposite his daughter. "And that was how we began to run away from them."

"Were they the ones that wanted you dead that time that we had to...?"

"Exactly. The man must have told them something against us to make them want us dead. But I assure you, Carly, I didn't do it."

"Dad, you don't have to prove anything to me. I know that you would never indulge in such a shameful act." Carly said. "We just need to be careful from now on."

As soon as they finished speaking, Carly got up and decided to retire for the night. As soon as she entered her room, she felt a cold metal on her neck, and she froze. For a while, her mind was blank, and she didn't know what to do. She almost began to panic when she remembered that she had undergone some special training.

"Who are you?" She asked bravely.

The other person didn't talk. Carly was tempted to turn and see who it was, but judging from how the hand was gloved, she knew that she wouldn't be able to see the person's face. The face would definitely be masked.

She slowly put her right hand to the back, and she noticed that there was a little space there. Before the person could move, she had squatted and turned around with a kick, knocking the man to the ground. She quickly kicked his wrist to send the weapon away from his hand and disarm him. Before the man could grab his gun, she marched his other wrist until she heard a satisfying, sickening crack.

"Ugh." He groaned silently. Carly pulled the man by the hair to her window and threw him down. She remembered her parents and ran down. Her father was being pulled, and she noticed that he had been drugged. Her mother was tied to a chair, hands, and mouth.

Carly felt a rage envelop her, and her eyes seemed to be blinded by that rage. She instantly attacked them, ignoring the silent cries of her mother's protest. She fought like her life depended on it, like a raging beast; she hit, kicked, and even stabbed those who attacked her with weapons. By the time she was done, there were only two other men who were still alive and conscious. The rest were either dead or unconscious. Carly didn't escape unscathed either. She was injured in several places, but she wasn't going to ignore it.

She bound the two men and ran up to grab her phone. As soon as she returned, she dialed Martin's number.

"Hello, Carly? What's the matter?" Martin inquired. "You said you wanted to take a break."

"Yes," Carly said. "But something just happened."

"What?" Martin asked.

"Could you send some agents to my parents' place first? Something needs to be cleared. We were attacked, and the two who are conscious have been tied. I need aid."

Martin's sigh was too loud. "That's alright; I'll send help right away."

Carly nodded. She was tired already. Her father needed to be treated in the hospital so that they could flush out all the excess drugs still in his system.

As for her mother, the woman still seemed alright. After the call and assessing the situation, Carly fell to the sofa. She was drained, and now that the adrenaline had reduced, she began to feel all the pain. Was she destined to not lead a peaceful life? Would it not have been better if her father wasn't rich? Maybe if he hadn't worked so hard, he wouldn't have had to work for that billionaire and wouldn't be involved in this kind of mess. If her father wasn't in this, she wouldn't need to meet Landon in the first place, and she would be a normal female and not a secret assassin or spy agent.
