Chapter 80 Someone tampered with it
"It was tampered with," Brion said, walking over to me. "You were right. Someone toyed with the routing wires and cables. And before you ask about the CCTV, I checked it, but we couldn't find anything. You parked your car out of range of the camera, so it didn't capture anything." He plopped down next to me, placing his bag on the table.
"Impossible," I muttered, sitting up on the couch. "How did.... Why?" Hearing that someone tampered with my car when I went to have lunch left me speechless. I couldn't even think of the proper question to ask.
"That's what I'm worried about." He reached out and removed strands of hair from my face. "Is there anyone you suspect? Someone you think did this?" He stared into my eyes, his gaze unwavering. We can't just brush this out as nothing. For someone to tail you, and toy with your car, they must have planned this."
"That's the problem." I got up from the couch and paced the floors, biting my right index finger as I thought back to everything that had happened this week. I couldn't even think of anyone capable of doing such a thing in my car. Dashiell would never do this. Not when he wants to get into my good grace. "I can't recall having a beef with anyone. Though I'm not close with some employees in his company, I haven't exchanged words or quarrelled with any of them."
It made little sense that someone would monitor me just to do something like this in my car.
"What about outside the office? Surely there must be someone who wants you dead." He nodded when I looked down in shock. Lifting his shoulders in a shrug, he added, "Obviously, the person who did it wanted you dead. Else they wouldn't have cut the wires. Had you not noticed it in time, driving the car would have led to your death. Either the brake malfunctions or the car combusts."
Shivers went through my body at his words. Knowing someone planned to get rid of me in such a gruesome manner scared me more than anything else had ever done. I rubbed my palms on my arms as I tried to think of someone who would do such a thing, and that was when I remembered. "Dashiell's mum?" t was more of a question because I wasn't convinced she would do something of that sort. She hates me. Yes, however, I have this feeling she wouldn't do so much to get rid of me.
I doubt she would waste her time thinking of how to take care of me. To her, I was nothing but dirt under jet feet, one she didn't need to waste time thinking of how to get rid of.
"His mum?" Brion tilted his head to the side, his expression mirroring mine. "Are you certain about this? Has she ever done anything untoward towards you?"
I shook my head, walking back to the couch I stood up from. "I don't even know what to say again. This is confusing."
Brion placed his hand on my back and brought me closer, so I had to place my head on his left shoulder. "Don't worry about it. I will have someone investigate. All you need to do is to be vigilant. Until we find who it is, you need to be careful."
"Have I not always been?" I peered up at him with a smile before I closed my eyes, sighing as I borrowed deeper into his embrace.
"Not just you, but the kids," he stated, his tone hard. "We need to be careful with them. We can't leave everything to chance, not with the culprit out in the dark. We are in the light, and we need to be cautious."
"I know."
"From now on, I will be the one bringing the kids home. Should whoever it is after your life not know of your kids, the best way to keep them safe is to minimize your interactions with them. Since you don't come home most days, keeping this house a secret won't be difficult."
"Do you believe someone is plotting against me?" I sat up, my gaze thoughtful. "What if this is a misunderstanding? It could be that someone mistakenly tampered with my car, thinking it was someone's. This might not be something serious. You just -" his glare made me pause. I couldn't complete my remarks because he looked like he was just moments from dragging my hair because of my words.
"Are you for real, Nova? Are you even listening to yourself? I doubt you are."
"Why? I can't indeed think of anyone I have a problem with. You can't blame me for saying my mind. I'm not saying I won't be careful from now on. I'm just stating my facts. What if we were wrong? And this was just a mistake from someone who's targeting another person? My car wasn't the only one parked there," I explained, keeping my gaze locked with his. "I don't want to alert my babies over something that might not even be true."
"Which is why I'm not asking you to tell them about this. We will keep it between us. There's no use in letting the kids know. Until we are certain this isn't a trap for you, we need to be vigilant." I nodded at his words. "I see. From now on, I will just have to be careful when going over to pick them."
"No, don't. I will pick them up myself," he offered before I could say anything further. "Any time you want to see them, you can come over to the house or ask me to bring them somewhere. This way, we will limit your contact with them in public."
I nodded at his words, even though I wanted to argue about it. Not being able to pick up my kids was the one I hated the most. However, I knew he was right. Until we are certain of the threat,
