Chapter 69 I Can Really Stand Up

Shirley looked at the strong Laura in front of her, grinning from ear to ear. "You're amazing!"

Laura was thrilled. She used to be so terrified of needles that she'd scream in pain during her last few injections. But after all this time with Shirley's treatment, she wasn't as scared anymore. Now, it just felt like a tiny pinch when the needle went in.

Shirley took a pill from a fancy porcelain bottle and handed it to Laura. "Here's your pill for today."

Laura smiled and popped the pill into her mouth like a pro. Her eyes lit up. This pill tasted different from the usual ones. It had a faint medicinal flavor, a bit bitter, but not in a bad way. It was like drinking black coffee, leaving a slight sweetness after the bitterness.

"Ms. Johnson, why does this pill taste different from the others?" Laura asked, curious.

Shirley touched Laura's forehead, smiling warmly, and explained, "The previous pill was for the first course of treatment, and this one is for the second course."

"What's the difference between the first and second courses?" Laura asked, puzzled.

"Well, the first course was just to give your legs some sensation, like feeling in your legs! As for the second course..." Shirley paused on purpose, making Laura a bit anxious.

Just as Laura was about to burst with curiosity, Shirley stopped talking, and Laura anxiously asked, "What's the effect of the second course treatment?"

'I am dying to know what the second course will do. The first course already surprised me so much. Will the second course let me stand up? Or maybe even walk like a normal person?' Laura wondered.

"It can let you stand up for a moment and take a few steps while holding onto something," Shirley said seriously, seeing Laura's eager expression and deciding to stop teasing her.

"Really?" Laura's eyes filled with tears. "Is it true? Can I really stand up?" She excitedly grabbed Shirley's arm, looking up at her, desperate for confirmation.

Laura had seen so many doctors, taken so many pills, and had so many injections, but none of them had made her stand up. Instead, her condition had just gotten worse.

When Laura had lost all hope, Shirley miraculously relieved her pain. Now Shirley was telling her she could stand up; how could she not be overwhelmed with excitement?

Shirley looked at the excited Laura, her eyes serious, and nodded, "Yes! You will be able to stand up!"

Laura threw the blanket off her legs and tried to stand up from the wheelchair.

Shirley and Kathleen quickly grabbed Laura's arms, both of them super nervous.

Shirley was dying to know if the second course of treatment had worked, but she was also scared Laura might fall. Meanwhile, Kathleen was a mix of excitement and worry.

Laura's body trembled a bit as her feet touched the ground. With a gentle push from her legs, she slowly rose from the wheelchair, feeling the real, solid connection between her feet and the floor.

"Ms. Johnson, Mom," Laura called out excitedly, "I can really stand up!"

Tears of joy filled Laura's eyes, streaming down like a flood, unstoppable and overwhelming. She was beyond excited; the thought that she could stand up and not be a burden to others anymore was overwhelming.

Shirley looked at the excited Laura, her eyes a bit red, and let out a light laugh of joy and relief. She was thrilled because the second course of treatment had worked, and all the years of effort from both her and Emily were finally paying off. She felt relieved because she hadn't failed. If this treatment had failed, she didn't know if she could face treating patients again.

Kathleen hugged Laura tightly, her eyes blurred with tears, which fell like pearls, leaving a trail of crystal-clear marks on her face. Each tear was filled with excitement and joy. "You can finally stand up! Thank God! Ms. Johnson, thank you so much!"

Kathleen hugged Laura and cried.

With all these years of hardship, Kathleen finally saw a glimmer of hope and could breathe a sigh of relief. Every time she saw Laura suffering, it broke her heart. Kathleen had always wished she could take Laura's place and endure the pain. But now, Laura was finally getting better!

After Kathleen and Laura cried for a while, letting out all the emotions that had been bottled up for years, they wiped the tears from each other's faces.

Seeing that they had calmed down, Shirley spoke softly, "Even though Laura can stand up now, she shouldn't stand for too long."

Laura quickly sat back in the wheelchair, feeling a bit tired from standing for so long and knowing she had to listen to Shirley.

"Yes! Laura, now that you've just managed to stand up, you absolutely can't afford any more issues. We'll listen to Ms. Johnson!" Kathleen eagerly agreed, thinking, 'Shirley is really amazing, like a miracle worker. In just a few days, she's made such a big change in Laura's condition! I am so grateful to Ms. Johnson!'

"Thank you, Ms. Johnson! You are truly kind-hearted! Terry and I will definitely repay you!" Kathleen said sincerely.

"Yes! Ms. Johnson, we will definitely repay you!" Laura echoed.
