Chapter 70 The Second Treatment Was Successful
Shirley's eyes sparkled with laughter as she playfully tapped Laura's nose and shook her head with a chuckle. "No need to repay me. Just knowing you trust me enough to be my first test subject makes me super happy!"
Laura grinned back at Shirley, thinking she was just too shy to accept her thanks.
After that, Shirley waved at Kathleen and was about to leave when Laura called out urgently, "Ms. Johnson, wait up!"
Shirley turned around, looking puzzled. "Laura, are you feeling okay?"
Shirley got a bit nervous, worried that Laura might be having some bad reaction to the medication. That would be a big deal.
Laura shook her head. "No, Ms. Johnson, I'm fine. I just wanted to get your phone number, if that's cool?"
Shirley had been really freaked out for a second there! Her heart almost stopped, but thank goodness it wasn't a reaction to the meds.
"Sure thing," Shirley replied with a smile.
After they swapped numbers, Shirley slipped out through a secret passage in the room.
Laura watched her go, then turned to Kathleen with a mischievous grin. "Mom, do you think we should help Shirley with that situation?"
Seeing Laura's expression, Kathleen knew she had a plan. "Got something in mind?"
Laura nodded, her face lighting up with a smile.
Kathleen chuckled and tapped Laura's nose.
Laura pouted and huffed, "It's all Mr. Thompson's fault for not smoothing things over with Ms. Johnson yet. If he had, Dad would've signed that contract by now."
After Kenneth failed to seal the deal with Terry, Laura had asked Terry about it. She found out Kenneth seemed clueless about what he did to upset his fiancée.
Laura was determined to make Kenneth pay for upsetting Shirley.
For the past few days, Kenneth had been calling Terry daily to set up a meeting, but Laura had Terry politely decline each time, reminding Kenneth to make things right with Shirley.
Still, no progress.
Laura thought Kenneth was really clueless when it came to relationships. So, she decided to give him one more chance today. If he still didn't get it, she'd be mad. And when Laura got mad, it was serious. If Kenneth didn't take this chance to make up with Shirley, she'd introduce someone better to her.
Kathleen looked at Laura, her eyes full of affection. She knew Laura too well. Laura just wanted to help Kenneth make things right with Shirley.
"So, what's the plan?" Kathleen asked, taking her time. She wanted to help Shirley too but didn't want to mess things up.
"It's a piece of cake," Laura said, her eyes twinkling with mischief.
Laura leaned in and whispered her plan to Kathleen, then pulled back with a grin. "This way, Ms. Johnson has to forgive Mr. Thompson."
Kathleen nodded, her eyes full of affection. She gently tapped Laura's head. "You get your romantic ideas from your dad."
Laura chuckled, her eyes sparkling with happiness, agreeing with Kathleen.
Meanwhile, Shirley was driving home, wearing a Bluetooth headset and calling Emily. She couldn't wait to share the good news about their progress.
Emily picked up quickly. "Shirley! Any updates on our live experiment?"
Shirley smiled. "Yep!"
"Really? How far along are we?" Emily's voice was buzzing with excitement.
Shirley could feel Emily's excitement through the phone. If Emily were here, she'd probably hug her and cry.
This cancer experiment wasn't just Shirley's; it was Emily's too. Emily had poured all her time into it, while Shirley had only spent the first three months on the initial research. The rest was all Emily.
Shirley had to juggle her responsibilities with the Johnson Family, so she didn't have much lab time. Whenever she had a free moment, she'd be in her study, working on medicine and formulas instead of going to the lab.
"The second course, and it's going great," Shirley said calmly, her earlier excitement now becoming subdued.
"That's amazing, Shirley!" Emily's voice cracked with emotion. "It's really moving into the second course?"
Emily had been holed up in the lab, working on the formula Shirley gave her. She'd cut off all contact with the outside world, spending all her time with lab mice. When she got tired, she'd talk to the mice to relieve stress. The repeated failures had broken her down many times, but she'd always pick herself up and keep going.
Now, Shirley was telling her the experiment had entered the second course. That meant they were more than halfway to success. Emily couldn't help but be excited; their medicine was finally about to succeed.
"It's true! And Laura can already stand up," Shirley said seriously. "Once she can walk completely, I'll definitely bring her to our research base to meet everyone."
