141 The truth
Even though Kamara was in such pain, Enzo was relieved that it wasn't finished yet. He was going to relish every tear she cried. With an unfathomable coldness, he turned to face away and prepared to walk away.
She murmured in a shaky voice, "Enzo, wait. Why do you detest me so much? How have I hurt you?"
Enzo didn't look at her since he was unable to respond to her while maintaining eye contact with Kamara.
"You were born, Kamara. Your existence." he said, but his answer just made matters worse by saying, "I'm sure you'll agree with me when the time comes."
Kamara realized that Enzo intended to return and inflict more pain on her, as evidenced by his quick retreat.
Kamara stood there motionless, as if she didn't want to move. She stood there thinking, remembering everything that Enzo had said to her. She realized that he had finally achieved his goal of severely hurting her. The emotions Kamara had been holding in for so long finally spilled out in a loud, piercing howl that could be heard for miles.
Even though some of what Enzo had said didn't make sense, she could still hear it in her ears. They stayed there, nonetheless, as Kamara's sole companions for the extended periods she was alone herself.
Caiden was so preoccupied with Ed's predicament that he failed to notice Kamara's departure. His wolf hissed to alert him that Kamara was in serious danger as he turned to look behind him and failed to see her. The following instant, Caiden was at a loss for what to do. Not only did he need to locate Nate, but he also needed to track down Kamara and save her from her own actions.
His gaze concentrated on Bruno as he said, "Where did Kamara go? Sir, I'm not sure," he answered. "As soon as she heard Ed claim that Enzo was the one who attacked Nate, she fled."
"It's not possible." His inner wolf became even more restless, enraged that Caiden was still undecided about what to do. "Bruno, come on over here and let's find Kamara."
"Alpha, I believed that locating Nate was more crucial." He asked, not liking what he saw when he looked at Caiden's face.
"Bruno, you're not here to ask me questions." He passed him by and went to the door. "Just follow my instructions."
There was not enough time for Caiden to hop in the car and head to Kamara's parent's old home. He took Bruno with him as he rushed through the streets. He found Louis on the ground when he got there. There had been a fight. Louis wasn't wounded; he was still breathing even though he remained unconscious. With disdain, Caiden observed him and didn't even go close to him.
"Grab him and take him to the police station. And this time, make sure he doesn't escape," he gave the deputy the command.
He turned to face Caiden and stated, "I promise that, sir," before turning to enter the house.
Caiden was furious with Enzo as Bruno called the police and instructed them to send a patrol to the location. He went through all the rooms in the old house, but neither of them was there. Bruno had already grabbed Louis as he emerged, so he was alone himself when he yelled Enzo's name.
"Alpha, why are you acting so tense?" The voice was directly behind him.
Slowly, Caiden turned to face him. Enzo had blood on his hands. Caiden went into a panic. With his weapon ready, the alpha began to rush at Enzo, and Enzo realized that the alpha could kill him.
"Where is Kamara?"
"Caiden, don't take one more step." However, the alpha only halted when there were just a few inches separating them.
He first glanced at Enzo's hands before focusing on his gaze; the alpha had an intense desire for vengeance in every aspect of him.
"Caiden, do you think I killed Kamara?" He displayed his unclean hands. "Do you believe I'm as murderous as you are?"
He moved closer to him, nearly picking Enzo up off the ground by clutching his shirt.
"My killer instinct will not hold back when I find Kamara, so tell me where she is right now."
Enzo continued to think Caiden would never hurt him, though. Caiden always held back when it came to Enzo, but if he truly intended to hurt him, he would have already done it. Maybe it was because they had been friends for so long, or maybe it was because he still had Jessie as his wife.
With his hands raised in surrender, he said, "She's fine, Caiden. I just hunted an animal to make dinner, which is why I have blood on my hands."
"Enzo, you shouldn't be acting so casual with me," he said, letting him go quickly.
He said, "I'm not making fun of you, Caiden. I even gave Louis to you as a gift to commemorate our amazing friendship."
Evidently uncomfortable with Enzo's behavior in front of him, Caiden came up to him once more.
Pointing a finger at him, he said, "If you've done anything to Kamara. I'll hunt you down until I eliminate you, and I'll forget that we were ever friends."
Enzo did not have any bitterness on his face.
"You'll find her somewhere in the forest, about three kilometers from here," he said with a smirk to Caiden, totally disregarding his warnings. "But let me be clear with you, Caiden: Kamara owes me, and neither you nor anyone else will stop me from collecting it from her when the time comes."
Caiden was so overcome with hate that he was unable to recognize Enzo at all. One last time, he peered into his eyes and saw something dark. Caiden went into the forest, searching for Kamara no matter what. When he saw her, night had already set. Her face was smeared and her clothing were filthy, suggesting that she had shed a lot of tears. Her expression was blank, as though someone had taken her soul away.
She stayed put as Caiden got closer. He knelt to stroke her face slowly.
"What did Enzo do ti you?" Observing her eyes slowly turn to him with tears in them, he asked.
Her voice was hardly audible as she said, "He told me the truth about Louis."
It pained Kamara even more than her wounds physically, Caiden thought. Kamara was immobile due to a pelvic fracture.
"Kamara, what truth is that?" he held her hands.
She muttered, "Not now," feeling her body deteriorate. "All I want is to get home."
She shocked him with her strength as he held her in his arms. She let out a moan, and that was the last thing Caiden heard from her the whole way back to the pack.
