Chapter 22 Heart beat
Lyra’s POV.
It took a few moments before the escort Seraphina had sent out returned.
My heartbeat multiplied when I saw her enter the hall.
The alpha lifted his face and his forehead creased.
The escort bowed. “Greetings, alpha”
The alpha didn't get to ask her why she was here when she moved over to Seraphina, whispering into her ear.
She was the type of bodyguard who'd be like….. they take orders only from their master.
The escort looked like she didn't give a fuck about the alpha.
I tried to focus on what she was trying to tell Seraphina. I couldn't hear what it was but when ssraphina’s gaze snapped to me, I knew I could breathe out in relief.
She had the look that showed that she was pissed off and surprised at the same time.
That could only mean one thing, the water container had been filled.
Here, meals weren't done in silence. I had served in the great hall multiple times since I started working at the palace and there had never been for once a meal served here without discussions being made.
The alpha spoke. “Both of you should get mated,” he said.
I could feel Seraphina straighten her back beside me and my eyes moved to lord Kael who only paused his meal, holding the cutleries in his hand and staring at a blank space on the table.
He had been silent all through the mealtime and Elias also hadn't said a word.
“I have been waiting for you to find your mate” The alpha continued. “But since you haven't found a mate yet, then it means the moon goddess wants you to mate Seraphina”
“Right Seraphina?” The alpha turned to her.
Seraphina smiled. “You are correct, alpha”
“I had waited for him to find his mate. I was going to respect the moon goddess' decision if she truly finds him a mate but now that I think of it” she paused. “We should just get mated instead”
My eyes were still fixed on lord Kael, I didn't expect him to look at me but he brought his gaze to me at the moment.
I stiffened and my throat tightened but I didn't avert my gaze.
That moment, a part of me wanted to voice out to everyone and tell them I'm his mate. It felt like something was being stolen from me and I could do nothing to defend it.
Like lord Kael noticed what was going on in my mind, his jaws clenched and his eyes darkened as they refused to let go of mine.
The alpha’s voice which rose again made me break eye contact.
“Then we should hold a council meeting,” he said with a slight smirk.
“I'll inform my Father” Seraphina bowed slightly. I could imagine the kind of joy that'd be going through her whole body and soul at the moment.
She had always shown that she liked lord Kael even though he pushes her away sometimes.
Rumors had it that she's acting like Luna already even when the Alpha is not dead yet and lord Kael was still not eligible to become alpha.
The discussion at the table continued for minutes which almost led into an hour and it was mostly between the Alpha and Seraphina while my mom tried her best to chirp in at every chance she got.
When the meal ended, I was the first to stand up, getting ready to leave.
“Thanks for inviting me to dinner, alpha” I bowed. “I’m grateful for your benevolence"
The alpha looked at me and smiled. I think the man is fond of me, and as much as that was supposed to be a good thing, I didn't like it.
It would make people talk about me. They already started doing so, they've always done, but finding out I was having meals at the same table with the alpha would surely cause problems for me with the maids. Especially when Seraphina also doesn't like it.
“You should take walks with me sometimes” The alpha continued. “Walks are great”
Seraphina laughed before I could reply. “Alpha, did you get tired of walking with me?”
“By chance, do I bore you when we walk?” She asked.
She didn't explain but I could explain the situation.
She was usually the one to escort the alpha whenever he goes for his walk if she's around here but now he’s trying to switch to me.
Another reason why I should space myself away from the nobles here. Seraphina was going to hate me completely and she would make life hell for me more than I would ever imagine.
“No,” the alpha replied. “You are too fun to walk with”
“I want to see how walking with someone who has gone through a lot would be,” he said.
He was right, I had gone through dozens even under his roof but I had no tale to tell, everything is buried inside the hearts.
“Be available tomorrow, Lyra.” He said, more like an order. “Go for a walk with me”
I didn't respond immediately but my face instinctively moved to my Mother.
The look on her face told me. “This is your chance, don't miss it”
I turned back to the alpha and bowed deeply. “Yes, alpha”
I moved out of the room, heading back to the quarters as I kept sighing deeply.
My whole body ached from the work I had done all day and my whole mind was clouded with the things that had been going on with me lately.
My life had always been messy but the moment lord Kael stepped into this house, it became messier.
A voice which rose at my back stopped me.
I recognized the voice and it made me freeze on a spot.
I turned back slowly and my eyes met with lord ksel’s.
I bowed slightly. “What can--” he cut me off sharply.
“Skip that!” He snapped. “I need to talk to you right now”
I didn't know why I got so nervous but I could hear the rapid sound of my breath in my ears.
