Chapter 21 Annoying
Lyra’s POV
“You should take your seats” My mother’s voice which rose made Seraphina snap her gaze away from me.
She forced a smile to her lips and moved to the table, wanting to take a seat.
It was a bit surprising that she came to pick the seat beside me but I should have known Seraphina wouldn't do something without an agenda.
Like a mistake, she used her hand to slide the glass of wine on my side of the table to the floor.
The wine spilled on me and she took a hold of the glass before it could fall.
She gasped in surprise while the table stilled, everyone turning their gazes to us.
“I’m sorry about that, Lyra. You should clean up outside” she said.
I didn't complain or argue with her, I only bowed my head and gave a small smile.
I stood up and made to leave the table.
“You should be more careful, Seraphina!” The alpha warned. “You aren't always this clumsy”
“I apologize” she bowed her head deeply.
I moved out of the hall and as soon as I got outside, I heard Seraphina’s voice behind me.
I didn't know why she did that but seeing that now, it felt like she did it because she wanted to see me.
She was trying to make me leave the room so she could have a talk with me.
“You don't want to miss dinner by looking for somewhere to get your dress cleaned,” she said.
“Here, take this” she stretched a handkerchief to me.
My eyes lingered on her for a while before I took the handkerchief from her.
“Thank you” I bowed slightly.
I dusted the wine and soaked it away from my dress with the handkerchief she gave me while she only watched.
All of a sudden, she crossed her arms and when I looked up at her, her eyes were darkened.
“I remember giving you a task to complete just a few minutes earlier,” she said.
“There's no way you could tell me you are done with it” her gaze squinted. “You defied my orders and came here to eat?”
Seraphina scoffed and moved closer to me. “I can punish you anyway I want, the alpha will not intervene, even your wretched mother pretending to be a good person will not be able to save you”
I swallowed hard. “You are mistaken, Lady Seraphina”
“I finished the task you gave me before I came here” I said.
She scoffed, looking at me in a way that showed that she doesn't believe even a cent of the words I had just spoken.
“That’s not possible! You couldn't have done that and gotten here even before me!” She snapped.
I didn't say a word but I still had the confident look I had on when I lied.
“Kelly, you there?” She snapped her gaze to the side and one of her escorts appeared from the shadows.
“Yes, My lady” she replied with her head slightly bowed.
“Go check whether she truly completed the task I gave her,” Seraphina said.
Her eyes were on me and it looked like she was trying to see through my facade.
“Report back to me in the grand hall” the escort bowed, understanding her order.
I didn't give Seraphina the satisfaction of seeing the look of fear she wanted on me but in my chest, my heart thumped loudly.
I didn't know if Enna had finished fetching. I didn't know if she even did it.
Earlier, I felt like I could trust her but at the moment, I was starting to have doubts.
I was starting to feel goosebumps crawl up my skin but I smiled through it all and returned into the hall after Seraphina.
We had kept the alpha waiting as they were all waiting for us to get back before we started the meal.
The meal started but I could barely eat the food. What I mostly did was take an empty spoonful of food into my mouth.
I was thinking about what Seraphina would do to me if she finds out I didn't do what she asked of me but showed up here.
Then, I'll be cooked. I was starting to consider involving the alpha and seeking his help but I knew that'd cause other problems for me later on.
The alpha was a busy man, he won't be around me all the time.
“You look beautiful in that dress, Lyra,” the alpha complimented.
“Right, everyone?” He laughed.
The man was giving efforts to make sure I belonged among the people I was sitting with.
“I'm flattered, alpha” I bowed with a smile.
“Yes, I noticed,” Seraphina scoffed silently. Then she turned her face from her plate to me.
“I wonder who wears such luxurious dresses to an ordinary dinner,” she said with a chuckle.
Mom also laughed heartily even though what Seraphina said wasn't that funny. Instead, I knew she was mocking me.
“Maybe you should learn from Lyra,” Mom chirped. “She seems to give importance to things more than you do”
“You think it's a mere dinner but she believes it’s a special gathering with the alpha” Mom explained what was not the truth.
The only acceptable truth was the fact that she made me wear this because she wanted me to be the centre of attention during dinner and here it's happening.
“So, you need to learn,” Mom said while blinking eyes at Seraphina with a smile. “Don't you think Lyra should attend our mealtime more often?” She turned to the alpha.
The both of them laughed like it was a joke. The alpha then turned to me. “Of course, she can”
“Lyra!” He called, his voice exuding authority. “Come for meals here anytime you wish”
“We need the future Luna to learn from you as your mother had said” he added.
I laughed shortly even though I didn't find it funny. I didn't want to get entangled in their lives and daily activities but it looks like there's no way out now.
