Chapter 23 Another trouble
Lyra’s POV
The alpha heir led me to a quiet corner and I was made to stand in front of him. I was breathing so fast, nervous as ever.
What did he have to say to me?
Lord Kael stood with his hands in his pocket, his back straightened and his eyes on me.
“Earlier when my father talked about mates” he paused.
I should have known he was going to talk about this.
“What was going through your mind?” He asked. “What were you going to say?”
I stared at him and thoughts ran through my mind but among all, none came and told me to tell a lie.
“I thought about telling everyone,” I said.
He threw his face to the side and scoffed. “Tell them what?”
Two steps taken forward from lord Kael was what it took to make me shiver.
But still, I didn't let my words get dried in my throat. “That I'm your mate. And you are my mate”
“You must be crazy,” he spat.
“Did you start dreaming about ending up as my mate? Because I told you it would never happen”
My jaws clenched. He was right. Why the hell was I planning on telling everyone that.
I wanted to reply to him but as soon as I parted my lips to speak, a voice towered over the silence.
“What are you….. talking about?”
I was surprised and quickly turned to where the sound came from. It was Seraphina.
Her eyes were wide open in shock and her lips were parted in disbelief.
Lord Kael was calm, his hands still in his pocket and his eyes now moved to Seraphina.
“How did you get here?” He asked.
“I followed you,” she said. “I saw you walking with her. It was suspicious, it was worth following you so I did” she explained.
“Will you explain this?” Seraphina's voice shook. “You have a mate and she's the one?”
I bet she would have turned to me and looked at me with disgust if she wasn't so shaken at the moment.
“We’ll talk about it later, Seraphina.” Lord Kael said with a stern voice. “No way I'm accepting her as my mate”
Seraphina shook her head, tears brimming at her eyes. “That’s a lie, Kael”
“If you aren't going to accept her then you should have rejected her the moment you found out” she said.
Kael didn't say anything to her but only turned to me.
“I, Kael Robinson, reject Lyra Drake as my mate,” he said.
Without hesitation, I gave a reply. “I accept the rejection”
The moment I said that, a sharp pain struck my chest and I was forced to clutch onto my chest while slowly going down to the floor.
My chest hurts, so much it felt like it was too much to bear.
My gaze snapped up and I realized that lord Kael was also in the same situation.
“Kael, what's wrong?” Seraphina looked panicked and she quickly crouched down beside him, her hand on his back.
I also kept groaning, tears at the corner of my eyes.
Seraphina stood up slowly. “The bond won't break” she could also realise that now.
“It's the fated mate's bond,” she said. She could also tell.
“But….” Kael was trying to steady his breathing.
The pain was starting to fade away and I was finally able to breathe again.
Lord Kael stood up while I stayed crouched down.
“The first and second time we tried to break it, nothing happened,” he said. “There was no pain”
“If you keep trying, the pain will keep intensifying” she said.
Kael’s forehead creased. “How do you know that?”
The way Seraphina’s body tensed and her eyebrows raised was suspicious but it felt like I was the only one who noticed that.
“I heard it somewhere,” she said.
Maybe Lord Kael believed that but I didn't.
Seraphina’s gaze locked on me, her teeth getting gritted behind her closed lips.
“Leave!” She snapped at me.
I bowed and turned around. This time, she didn't call me back to tell me how disrespectful I was for doing that. She was too disoriented to think of that at the moment.
I headed back to the maid's quarter and was surprised to see Enna sitting in the corridor.
She was asleep, her head getting thrown back and forth.
Why was she outside?
Her room was rooms away from mine but she was here, sitting in front of my room.
“Enna?” I called softly.
She jolted up, looking so startled.
She saw me and smiled. “Finally, you are back”
“What are you doing outside?” I asked the most important question. Or maybe that wasn't important because I could tell she was out here waiting for me.
“Waiting for you” she said the obvious.
“It's cold outside. Why will you wait?” I snapped at her.
“Look at you. You ended up sleeping” I glared at her.
She chuckled and stood up, dusting her nightdress which she had changed into.
“I'm not sleeping, I only dozed off for a few seconds,” she said.
I laughed but my face suddenly turned serious again. “Thank you. For everything you did today”
I moved to get into my room. I looked at her again and her eyes were also on me. “You won't go into your room?”
“Why did you think I was waiting for you?” She eyed me with her side eyes.
“I badly want to know how things went!” She almost yelled but kept her voice low because of the other maids who were surely asleep.
“The sleep won't show up, I couldn't get my mind off the look that would be in Seraphina's face when she saw you!”
I laughed again. Enna was a funny character and I was starting to like her the most.
I told her everything she needed to hear and we both laughed at the memory together.
She spent the night in my room but was quick to leave the next morning before the time for the roll call.
After the roll call, I was surprised to see Seraphina in the maids quarter.
Everyone knew she was here for me as I was the only one in trouble with her at the moment.
But the reason why she had come to fetch me shocked me when I found it out.
