Chapter 20 Dinner night
Lyra’s POV.
What else did Gina not have me do? I was so damn sure I did most of the work available in the estate today.
Evening came faster than lighting and my new friend was inside the room with me. I had told her about the dinner and how my mother had given me a dress to wear.
She helped me with the dress and when I finished wearing it, she said it looked good on me.
I couldn't see how the dress looked on me as there was no mirror in my room to check it with.
“I'll bring mine over” Enna said and dashed out of my room before I could stop her.
She brought the mirror and placed it in front of me to check.
“I bought it two weeks ago when I got my paycheck,” she said.
I looked at myself inside the mirror and the dress was perfectly my size, like it was tailored to perfection just for me.
“I told you it looked good on you” Enna said when she saw me smiling into the mirror.
“Yes, but the problem is…” she cut in before I could finish my sentence.
“Lady Seraphina?” she asked.
It was like she could perfectly read my mind.
Yes, she was the problem. “The dress looks too flashy, won't it feel like I'm trying to steal the spotlight of the night?”
Enna placed a hand on my shoulder. “IRS nothing special, Lyra. It's just dinner, don't think much of it”
I pressed my lips into a thin line and nodded. “Okay, then”
Just as I was about to leave the room together, a knock came on my door.
I answered it and one of the maids was in front of my door, her face was hardened and she lifted her eyes to look at me.
For a moment, she couldn't say a word and she could only stare at my dress.
It felt awkward and I was getting nervous.
“Is something the problem?” I asked her.
She finally blinked her eyes and relayed the message she was asked to relay.
“Lady Seraphina told me to tell you to fill the two drums at the back of the laundry room with water” she said.
My eyes widened. “What? It's 7 pm. It's late already” I said with my lips parted in disbelief.
The girl looked at me with a scoff..”Should I relay that back to her and tell her you are not willing to obey her order?”
My jaws clenched but I knew there was nothing I could do.
I knew what Seraphina was trying to do, she wanted me to miss the dinner tonight.
“I'll do it” I said dejectedly and watched as the girl retreated.
I moved back inside and Enna was by the door, her face turning in worry.
“She is trying to get you into trouble,” she said. I knew who she was referring to, Seraphina.
“If you don't attend the dinner, the alpha specially invited you too, then the alpha will think you are taking him for granted”
I was lost having to choose between the Alpha and Seraphina.
“Come,” Enna dragged me. “Let's check how big the water container is”
We both went to the back of the laundry room and checked the containers. There was a large one and a small one.
I calculated how long it would take me to get that done. 20 minutes if I walked fast.
But the dinner was probably starting already right now.
I clenched my jaws. I wouldn't want to go late, and I wouldn't want to let Seraphina take it out on me the next day.
“I got this,” Enna said. “you go ahead”
“What?” I blinked my eyes. It felt like I couldn't understand her but I knew I did.
She was telling me to go ahead to have the dinner while she help me sort that out.
No way.
“Get going. I’ll fetch this, it won't take long after all” she said.
I blinked my eyes again. “We've only known each other for less than a day and you want to help me?” I asked, looking amazed.
“We don't need to know each other for years before I decide to take you as my friend,” she said.
“Get Going” she said again. “Of course, you will ruin the dress if you fetch water with that”
“You might even trip and fall,” she added.
“But….” My face was still cladded in shock.
She took a deep breath like she was starting to get frustrated of my stubbornness. “It's not for free, you owe me a meal when you get your pay check,” she said.
I smiled at her. I knew she said that to convince me to go so she could fetch the water.
“Thank you. I owe you one "I smiled.
I didn't need to go back to my room, there was nothing I needed to take along for the dinner.
I got to the grand hall and was allowed in.
The meal table was already set but none of them were present yet.
Was I too early?
Just as I was about to turn to go find things to do until everyone was gathered.
I heard my mother's voice. “The dress is looking good on you, Lyra”
I let out a small smile. “i’m glad you wore it, it shows you are coming back to your senses”
I didn't respond to that. She moved closer and placed a hand on my shoulder.
“Tonight, you'll be the spotlight. I'm sure Seraphina wouldn't come here dressed like she's coming to a ball party” she said.
I knew it. I sensed it. She was trying to make me the centre of attention tonight while I didn't want to be seen.
The alpha arrived from a corner seconds later.
“Welcome, Lyra,” he replied when I offered him greetings.
“Let's sit,” he said.
Moments later, the trio who always walked together arrived. Lord Elias, Lord Kael and Seraphina.
My gaze snapped and when Seraphina landed her eyes on me, her legs buckled, her eyes widened in with a mix of terror and anger.
She thought she had successfully prevented me from appearing here today, but she was wrong.
