Chapter 13 He lost to his beta
Lyra's POV.
The duel ended. Everyone dispersed and went to their various places and rooms of residence.
I wasn't there when it ended. I had returned to the maid's quarter since there was no work assigned to me at the moment.
I was taking a nap when I heard the door open.
The maids quarter had different rooms and every maid had their own rooms. Not too small and big enough to be the same size as the room I had back in my mother's house.
I let the other maids enter my room without complaining so I didn't open my eyes.
I knew the person would raise her voice and tell me why she's here even in my sleep.
But a few minutes passed and I didn't hear a word and that made me flutter my eyes open.
I was shocked to see Seraphina standing and staring at me. I quickly jumped out of the bed and stood with my head slightly bowed.
“What brings you here, Lady Seraphina?” I stuttered.
She moved closer and her next actions shocked me to the core. She landed a slap on my face.
My eyes went wide open and my lips parted in disbelief. “What……” I couldn't even find words to express myself.
“You touched him with your filthy hands” she seethed in a low tone.
Now I understand what this is about. I touched lord Kael earlier.
“I didn't mean to. I was just surprised to see that he got hurt” I defended.
Before I knew what was happening, she landed another slap on my face and that earned a gasp from me.
“You are still talking about it with confidence,” she scoffed.
My jaws tightened but there was nothing I could do. I couldn't possibly fight against Seraphina and win. She's of high status, she's bound to be the future Luna.
I'd only jeopardize my life if I go against her. Like Mother said, I'd have to make her like me if I want to survive.
But I'm not letting my survival depend on Seraphina. I won't be acting as her loyal dog.
“I'm sorry. Please forgive my impudent act” I apologized with my head deeply bowed.
I thought that should resolve the grudge she holds against me? But it didn't.
“Go clean the duel arena up. I don't want to see anyone helping you with it” she said.
My jaws clenched but I didn't argue. “Yes ma'am”
She walked out of my room after muttering some curse words I couldn't hear and I moved outside behind her.
The duel arena was now empty, except for the alpha and his son who stood and discussed.
I didn't mean to eavesdrop, I just happened to be so close to them before I noticed they were standing there.
“You are the only alpha bloodline I have, Kael” the alpha said, his voice stern and in distress.
“You can't keep letting me down!” He snapped. “That was a simple duel with Elias you couldn't win!”
“It's not my fault, father!” Lord Kael snapped back. “I tried my best, you should have seen that!”
“Your best is not what I need. Show the workings, give it your all!” The alpha said.
That was when his gaze turned to the back and he noticed me standing. I quickly bowed my head and honored his presence with my greetings.
“Lyra, am I right?” He asked with a smile on his face.
I bowed more deeply. “Yes, alpha,” he nodded.
“I'm here to clean up” I said so he doesn't get any misunderstanding about the reason why I was standing. Again, he nodded his head in understanding.
“You should join us for dinner at the grand hall tonight.” He said. “I think I'd like to see your face more often”
Before I could speak, lord Kael interrupted his father. “What are you talking about! Why should dirt join us for dinner?”
The alpha smacked his tongue at him in a reprimanding way. “Don't look down on her! She's a part of our family too”
“She's your stepsister whether you accept it or not!” He added.
Lord Kael laughed and looked at me but I took my gaze away before I could even read the look on his face.
I turned my gaze back to the alpha and bowed slightly.
“Thanks for the offer, alpha,” I said. “But I'm afraid I would decline”
“I've already eaten dinner as it's evening already, I don't think I want to eat anything else till the day ends” I lied.
I just didn't want to sit in the circle of powerful people with ranks while they treat me like a nobody. Even if they don't treat me like that, it would be awkward.
“Then join us for breakfast tomorrow. I won't take no for that” the alpha said and before I could even agree or disagree, he bolted out of the area.
I was left with the alpha heir who I could tell was staring intently at me even though I was still staring at the Alpha's retreating back.
“Hey” he called. I blinked before I turned to him and as usual, I kept my head lowered.
“Look up at me,” he commanded.
I did exactly just that.
“Are you happy?” He asked.
My gaze squinted because I couldn't understand him. I was still processing his words when his voice rose again.
“Are you happy, huh?!” He roared and his voice made me flinch.
“What…… Do you mean?” I asked.
“You get to be treated like a human when I don't want it! The alpha likes you when I never will!” He paused. “It makes you feel on top of the world, doesn't it?”
He kicked a can with his legs and that again made me flinch.
“You are wrong, lord Kael,” I said calmly.
“Fuck you.” He spat.
“You and your mother…..” he pointed an accusing finger at me. “I'll make sure to send you both out of the estate!”
He kicked another can and dashed away from my sight.
As scary as he sounded and as pitiful as sending us away might sound, I was starting to look forward to it.
