Chapter 12 I prefer the beta
Lyra's POV.
The duel went on for more than thirty minutes, fierce and tense.
It almost felt like a real fight as they kept throwing each other to the ground. For a moment, I thought they slashed themselves with their swords too, or maybe they really did.
The duel ended when Elias threw Kael to the ground. He groaned and held his shoulder and Elias rushed to him to help him up.
He refused the help and stood up, wanting to attack Elias once again when the alpha called the duel to an end.
“Let's watch the next set of people, should we?” He said.
Lord Kael and lord Elias both got off the stage and walked to their seats. The both of them sighted me as they walked and the look on their faces told me who a good person is and who the demon was.
Lord Elias looked at me with surprise and amusement while lord Kael looked at me with his face filled with disgust.
He hates me. I know he's supposed to because of what I did to him last night but was he supposed to hate me this much.
It's only the first day of living with him and I've already gone through a lot because of him.
They got to me and took their seats, their gazes still fixed on me.
I had taken my body off the cart and straightened my posture seeing them approach.
“Are maids also allowed to watch a duel like this?” Lord Kael sneered.
“I had only brought meals to serve and was waiting for you lords to return” I replied politely with my head slightly bowed.
“It's a good thing you watched,” Elias chuckled. “How was the duel?”
I didn't know whether I needed to reply. If I did, it would definitely anger one of them and that person was most likely lord Kael.
Because based on the performance I saw on the stage, I'd like to praise lord Elias instead of him.
“It was good” I gave a simple reply with a small smile on my face.
Lord Elias only nodded and didn't give a reply.
I stood still and I thought I forgot for a moment what I had come to do.
“Serve the meal you are here to serve and get lost” lord Kael gave me a reminder.
I bowed and did as he had said, quickly getting the meal off the trays and getting it on the table for them.
I placed the drinks beside their meal but unfortunately, they had turned cold.
Lord Kael was the first to reach out to one of the drinks but as he took a sip, his face turned into disgust and he threw the can drink down to the floor and spit the one in his mouth also.
I didn't get too surprised but my eyes blinked against my wish.
I swallowed hard. I didn't make him angry did I? What was wrong with the drink?
“Why is this thing so fucking cold?” He snapped. “Were you sent to kill me, you bitch?”
My eyes blinked as nervousness washed over me at the moment but seconds later, my gaze darted from lord Kael's face which still scolded me to his head down to his ear.
I gasped. “You are bleeding!”
My voice rose higher than I had expected it to be and my legs moved faster than I had wanted it to move.
In a few seconds, I was touching lord Kael's skin, the tip of my finger grazing the bloodstain he had dripped down to his ear.
For a moment, the time stopped.
Everyone stared at us. I also stared at lord Kael not being able to withdraw my hand so quickly.
He also didn't push me away but only stared at me in awe.
“Is something wrong?” Seraphina's voice made the time resume ticking in my head.
My gaze snapped to her and her eyes were burning with fire and hatred for me.
I quickly moved back from the alpha heir and held the cart with my hands trembling.
I touched him. I touched his skin and even his blood.
“Please forgive my mistake. I'll get you another chilled drink” I said and quickly moved the cart away from the training grounds into the main mansion.
No one was in the kitchen when I got there. I leaned my hands on the counter and took deep breaths.
My heart was beating so fast, so erratically fast. So fucking fast. Was it because he's my mate?
Damn! The mate bond was doing shits to me than I had expected.
We needed to break it. Even if I have to beg him to. I can't deal with not wanting to see lord Kael get hurt just because he's my mate.
I can't deal with getting hurt when he's with another woman and I can't tell him not to be with one.
And I can't tell him to accept me as my mate because that's so damn absurd.
The chilled drink.
I got the drink and returned to the training ground. Another fight had commenced between another two people.
I placed the drink on the alpha heir's table respectfully and turned to face lord Elias.
“Would you like me to get you a cold drink too?” I asked.
“No,” he responded. “Thank you”
Damn, thank you sounded like gold to me at the moment. I couldn't remember the last time I was thanked for asking a simple question as a job a maid in the estate was supposed to do.
From the little time I've spent with lord Elias, I could tell he was totally different from lord Kael.
The total opposite of him. The type of men I'd like.
But people like me don't have dreams, we are supposed to dream of ending up with a man who is not even our mate. We could only go with our mate once we've found them.
But the one who's my mate will never be mine.
