Chapter 42

Chapter 42
THE TRUE MATE

"Laila!" Adam yelled dropping on his knees beside her. He shook her roughly his heart flying out of its cage as he feared something terrible had happened to her.
What would he do if something did happen to her?
He had promised his father that he would take care of her and just when he found her and started fulfilling what he had promised his father, he was losing her all over again.
"Laila!" He screamed again, panic completely taking over him.
Adam was beginning to lose his mind. Laila's body had gone cold and still like iron. His hands were shaking as he tried to feel for her pulse.
"Let me check her."
A voice was saying beside him. Adam looked up with rage in his eyes, hating the mere sound of the person he was seeing. Adam got up from his knees and stood up menacingly. He took long threatening steps towards him.
Logan took an unconscious step back remembering all the warnings Damon gave to him. Adam was dangerous and ruthless. He didn't think before acting and that was what led to their current situation. He was too brutal for his good.
"You! Why are you still here?" Adam barked his eyes turning red with boiling anger.
Logan would have asked himself the same question. What was he doing still standing there? He couldn't answer it but he knew that he had to do something or they would all lose the Queen wolf.
Logan knew his offer for help might get him killed but he had no choice. With the situation in the city of fangs and the disappearance of Damon, the only one who could save them was Laila Danvers. With Powers like hers, Dearkson couldn't stand a chance.
Despite his fear, Logan opened his mouth "I want to help."
Adam narrowed his eyes at him. He was beginning to wonder if the boy had gone mad. "You want to help? Are you stupid? You caused this and you stand here and say you want to help? I should have fucking killed you when I had the chance!" Adam snapped angrily.
"It's not my fault she is in this condition and if you will just let me take a look at her, you'll be saving everyone a lot of pain!" Logan yelled back.
Logan didn't know where he got the strength to yell at Adam like that from, but he did it anyway. It was the only way. He would rather accept to die by Adam's hands than let Dearkson have the satisfaction of killing him.
"You should have stayed away from her!" Adam retorted as fumes of anger seem to be escaping from his nostrils.
"We were having a conversation. You should learn that everyone is not your enemy! I have been in the field for days now! If I wanted to harm her, I would have done so a long time ago! I could have even gone to Mike who is probably heading here right now!" Logan yelled above his hearing.
He used Mike as a last card to save himself but it was true. The power Laila had exhibited could have reached miles and anyone could be drawn to it. Not forgetting her heat scent. Any make wolf who had a dick could get attracted to it, fish mask or not.
"You shouldn't have come here..." Adam groaned dropping to the ground once more. "It's your fault!" He cried.
His comment got to Logan and he lost his control. "She was trying to defend me from you! That's why she is like this! So, it is your fault, Adam! Not mine!"
Adam felt like tiny little needles were being pricked into his heart. The truth was difficult to take. He caused all of these. He did this to her. Because of his strong urge to hurt and kill others he felt were a threat to him or her. This was a trait in him, the council utilized for their advantage. Maybe it was even the reason they sent him to come to find her because they thought he would kill her the moment he saw her; for that was what he was, a killer.
He took a step back, panic crawling into him. He feared not for himself but his dear sister laying lifelessly on the ground.
Logan quickly went on his knees and held her hands, her pulse was weak but it was there. He placed his first finger under her eye bags and pulled it open, her eyes were still black. Whatever she had done was still having its effect on her.
"We need to take her inside," Logan said.
Adam wasted no time to quickly carry her in his arms, bridal style, inside their cave. They were only a couple of steps away so he didn't have to carry her for a long distance. He took her inside and gently placed her on their bed.
Logan pulled the bedcover and spread it over her cold body. Adam went in deeper into the cave and returned with more blankets. He handed them to Logan who placed all of them neatly on Laila, tucking her into the warmth of the material like a baby.
"Can you start a fire close by?" Logan told Adam.
Adam nodded and ran to his little fish roasting area and moved some of the dried sticks over to the bedside. He arranged stones systematically to carry the sticks. He then pulled away from the rug under the bed, to avoid it getting burnt. He placed the stick carefully on the stones and lighted the fire.
Logan checked her pulse again and it was slowly returning to normal. "I think it's working, she just needs some kind of warmth."
Adam nodded again and went to sit by her side. He took out her left hand and started rubbing his hands over hers, an effort to share some of his body heat with her.
Logan looked on at him. Wondering if he did what he was doing because of the mate pull. He would have to find that out by engaging Adam in a conversation. Even if it gets him killed, he would have to try and get as much information as he could get from Adam. Maybe he would even be able to help Laila solve her heat period problem. But above all, he would be performing his duty, he would be finding out more about Adam and Laila's relationship.
He found a spot close to the fire and sat.
"Do you feel it too?" Logan asked him, to Adam It came off out of the blue.
Adam stared up at him, confusion flowing in his eyes like he was seeing Logan for the first time.
"Feel what?" He grunted.
Logan's heart warmed up at his response. He was half expecting him to throw him out of their little hideout but surprisingly even the goddess was on his side on his quest to have a book in female wolves and gather information. Maybe this was his destiny and he was fulfilling it.
"The mate pull..." He said, feeling proud of himself but Adam still looked at him with confusion dancing in his eyes. What was Logan talking about now? — Adam wondered in his mind.
"... She is having it already. You should too. Are you not feeling anything?" Logan explained gesticulating with his hands
"I heard what you said the first time but I don't see why you are asking me that.." Adam muttered again.
Logan felt like slapping some sense into Adam. How could he be with his mate and not realize it?
Logan was even trying to point him out in the right direction but he was not getting it. How hard could Adam's head be? Probably as hard as a coconut, Logan thought.
Since Adam had a brain as thick as coconut, he would have to explain it to him like he was talking to a young wolf on their first day at school.
"Have you not picked up the scent of her heat?" Logan asked but, yet again Adam still looked clueless. "I could smell the damn thing from miles away and you sleep in the same cave and you didn't pick it up?" Logan cried out in frustration. How else could he explain such a simple thing to the guy?
Then a spark flashed in Adam's eyes. He turned his eyes away from Logan as if he felt embarrassed about the topic. Logan raised his brows wondering what had come over Adam.
Was he gay perhaps and the goddess mated him to the wrong gender? Who felt shy talking about their mate's heat? — Logan wondered as he stared at the city of fangs most ruthless Assassin. Ruthless and stupid, that was what people should call him because he had no brain!
"I did pick it up, but it wasn't-"  Adam started to say but could finish his words. "It wasn't -" he tried again but the words kept hanging in his throat.
Logan's eyes expanded in a choke. "It wasn't appealing? Holy goddess of the moon! You mean to say Laila's arousal wasn't appealing to you?"
This was another discovery. Laila needed to hear about this! It is either Adam Myers, the City of Fang's most feared assassin was into men or he was not a man at all.
The only way a female's arousal could not intricate or appeal to a male was if the female in question was either their child, sister, or mother. Logan looked intently at Laila and then back at Adam. There was no way Laila could birth Adam or Adam birth, Laila. Their age difference, if there was any, was too small. This left one option, they were siblings.
"Laila is your sister?" Logan blurted out unable to stop himself.
Adam raised his head sharply at him as if realizing he had said something he shouldn't have. But it was too late. Logan was too smart for his good.
