Chapter 20 Her Dream

Chapter 20 Her Dream
Clara's POV

"The moon drinks deeply when the debt comes due."
The voice echoes around me, coming from everywhere and nowhere. I'm standing in a forest clearing, but the trees are wrong… too tall, too twisted, their branches reaching like fingers toward a blood-red moon.
"Who's there?" I call out.
No answer. Just the sound of wind through leaves that rustle like whispers.
I look down and realize I'm wearing a white dress. Not my clothes… something old-fashioned, flowing, the kind of thing someone might wear for a ceremony. Or a funeral.
"Clara Veyron." The voice again, female and ancient. "You stand at the crossroads between ending and becoming."
"I don't understand."
"You will."
The moon grows brighter, turning from red to silver so intense it hurts to look at. I shield my eyes, but light pours through my fingers, burning cold against my skin.
When I lower my hands, I'm not alone anymore.
A woman stands across the clearing. She's beautiful in a terrible way… ageless, with long dark hair and eyes that reflect the moon's light like mirrors. She wears the same white dress I do, but hers is stained with blood.
"Who are you?" I ask.
"I am the first. The betrayed. The one who cursed the bloodline you seek to save." She moves closer, and I see that she's transparent… a ghost, a memory, something not quite real. "I am the reason you suffer."
My heart pounds. "You're the woman Kael's ancestor betrayed."
"He promised me forever. Gave me his child. Then abandoned us both when his pack demanded he mate with wolf blood." Her voice carries centuries of pain. "I died alone, holding our daughter, cursing his name and every generation that would follow."
"That wasn't Kael's fault. He wasn't even born…"
"Sins of the father become chains for the son. This is the way of curses." She's right in front of me now, close enough that I should feel her breath. But there's nothing… she's not really here. "You love him."
"Yes."
"Enough to die for him?"
The question hangs in the air between us. "I'm already dying for him. The bond…"
"I do not speak of slow death. Of wasting away in comfort while others fight your battles." Her eyes bore into mine. "I speak of blood and moonlight. Of willing sacrifice. Of choosing the knife."
A chill runs through me. "What knife?"
She gestures, and I see it… lying on the ground between us, a blade that gleams silver in the moonlight. Old. Ceremonial. The handle carved with symbols I don't recognize.
"The curse requires balance. Love for love. Life for life. Pain for pain." She kneels and picks up the blade, holding it out to me. "He took everything from me. To break what I wrought, you must give everything of yourself."
"I don't understand what you want from me."
"Your blood. Your humanity. Your very identity poured out beneath the moon that witnessed my death." She presses the blade into my hand, and I feel its weight, too real for a dream. "Only then will the curse release its hold."
I look at the knife, then at her. "If I refuse?"
"Then he watches you die as I watched our daughter die. Slowly. Painfully. Unable to stop it." Her expression softens slightly. "At least my way offers purpose. Your death would mean something. Would save him and all who come after."
"You want me to kill myself."
"I want you to choose sacrifice over suffering. To transform death into power." She steps back, fading slightly. "But the choice must be yours. Willing. Or the curse remains unbroken."
The clearing begins to dissolve around us, reality pulling me away from this strange place.
"Wait!" I call out. "When? How do I…"
"The blood moon rises in six weeks. When it reaches its peak, you will know." Her voice grows distant. "The knife finds those who are meant to wield it. As will you, when the time comes."
"I don't want to die!"
"Neither did I." She's almost gone now, just an outline against the trees. "But sometimes love demands everything. Sometimes the only way to save what matters is to let go of who we are."
Then she's gone, and I'm falling…
I wake up gasping, tangled in sheets soaked with sweat. My room is dark except for moonlight streaming through the window. Normal moonlight, not the blood-red horror from my dream.
But when I look at my hand, I swear I can still feel the weight of that blade.
"Just a dream," I whisper to the empty room. "Just stress and fear making up nightmares."
Except it didn't feel like a dream. It felt like a warning. Or a prophecy. Or both.
I get up and move to the window, looking out at the pack grounds. Somewhere out there, Kael is probably still awake, planning defenses against Marcus, trying to find the traitor, carrying the weight of two hundred lives on his shoulders.
And I'm here, dreaming about sacrificing myself to break a curse I barely understand.
The logical part of my brain, the doctor, the scientist, says it was just my subconscious processing everything that's happening. The curse, the prophecy, the constant talk of sacrifice and death.
But another part, the part that's been changing since I bonded with Kael, knows better. That wasn't just a dream. It was a message. A path forward.
Six weeks. A blood moon. A choice that would cost everything.
I should be terrified. Should be looking for ways to avoid whatever the dream is telling me will happen.
Instead, I feel almost calm. Like finding out the exact date and method of your death removes some of the fear. No more uncertainty. No more wondering when or how.
Just a deadline and a purpose.
I think about the woman in my dream, the one whose curse started all of this. She loved Kael's ancestor enough to bear his child. Enough that his betrayal destroyed her. Enough that she used her dying breath to punish his entire bloodline.
That's the kind of love that changes the world. For better or worse.
Is what I feel for Kael that strong? Would I bleed beneath the moon to save him?
A month ago, I would have laughed at the idea. I was a practical person. A doctor who believed in science and logic. Love was nice, but not worth dying for.
Now, standing in moonlight and remembering the weight of that dream-blade in my hand, I'm not so sure.
Maybe some things are worth dying for. Maybe love that demands everything is the only kind that matters.
Or maybe I'm just trying to find meaning in a situation where I'm dying anyway. At least this way, my death would accomplish something.
I climb back into bed but don't sleep. Just lie there thinking about blood moons and ancient curses and choices that can't be taken back.
Six weeks. That's what the dream said. Six weeks until I have to decide if I'm brave enough to follow through.
The smart thing would be to tell Kael. To warn him that I'm having prophetic dreams about sacrificial rituals.
But I already know what he'd do. He'd lock me up tighter than before. Would fight the prophecy with everything he has.
And maybe he'd win. Maybe we'd find another way to break the curse without me bleeding out under the moon.
Or maybe fighting fate would just make things worse.
I don't know what the right choice is. Don't know if I'm strong enough to make it when the time comes.
All I know is that I have six weeks to figure it out.
Six weeks to decide if love is worth dying for.
Six weeks to become someone who can hold that knife without shaking.
The moon outside my window seems brighter than it should be. Watching. Waiting.
Counting down to the moment I'll have to choose.
