Chapter 19 The Moving Plan
Chapter 19 The Moving Plan
Clara's POV
"We move her tomorrow night. The safe house in Colorado is ready."
I freeze outside Kael's study. That's Damon's voice, and he's talking about me.
"The Bloodfangs won't expect it," Kael responds. "By the time they realize she's gone, she'll be three states away with round-the-clock protection."
My stomach drops. He's planning to send me away.
"And when she wakes up to find herself in Colorado?" Damon asks. "She'll be furious."
"She'll be alive. That's all that matters."
I push the door open without knocking. Both men turn to look at me, guilt written across their faces.
"Colorado?" I keep my voice steady despite the anger building in my chest. "You're shipping me off like cargo?"
"Clara…" Kael starts.
"How long have you been planning this?" I step into the room, closing the door behind me. "Days? Weeks?"
"Since Viktor's interrogation," Damon admits, earning a sharp look from Kael. "The traitor is still out there. Marcus knows too much. Keeping you here is…"
"My choice," I interrupt. "Staying here, fighting here, dying here if it comes to that… those are my choices to make."
"Not when they're the wrong choices," Kael says firmly. He stands from his desk, and I see the determination in his eyes. "I won't watch another mate die because I was too stubborn to protect her properly."
"So you'll just drug me and ship me off? Make my decisions for me?"
"If that's what it takes, yes."
The casual way he says it stings worse than a slap. "This is exactly what David did. Making choices for me, deciding what's best without asking what I want."
Kael flinches at the comparison. "That's not fair."
"Isn't it? You're both treating me like I'm too stupid or too weak to know my own mind." I cross my arms, fighting back tears of frustration. "At least David had the decency to cheat instead of kidnapping me."
"Clara…"
"No." I hold up my hand. "You don't get to 'Clara' me right now. You're planning to drug me…I heard Damon mention sedatives earlier, and send me away while you face Marcus and the traitor and whatever else is coming. You're planning to fight without me."
"Yes," Kael says simply. "Because that's how you survive this."
"And what about you? What happens when the Bloodfangs attack and you're so worried about me that you make a mistake?"
"I won't make mistakes."
"Everyone makes mistakes!" My voice rises despite my efforts to stay calm. "You think I haven't noticed how distracted you are? How you check on me every hour? You can barely focus on pack business because you're so busy trying to keep me safe."
Damon clears his throat. "Maybe I should…"
"Stay," I tell him. "You're part of this plan. You get to hear this too."
He glances at Kael, who nods reluctantly.
"Here's what's going to happen," I continue. "You're going to cancel the Colorado plan. I'm going to stay here. And when Marcus makes his move… because we all know he will… I'm going to fight beside you instead of hiding three states away."
"Absolutely not," Kael says. "You've barely trained for two weeks. You can't…"
"I can't what? Defend myself? You're right. I probably can't beat a wolf in single combat. But I can think. I can strategize. I'm not useless just because I'm human."
"I never said you were useless."
"You're treating me like I am. Like I'm some damsel who needs to be locked away while the men handle everything." I move closer to him, forcing him to look at me. "I'm a doctor, Kael. I've spent years training to stay calm in emergencies, to think clearly when everyone else panics. Those skills matter in battle too."
"This isn't a hospital emergency…"
"No, it's worse. But the principle is the same. You need clear heads and steady hands. You need people who won't freeze when things go bad." I take his hand, feeling the bond pulse between us. "You need me here, not locked away somewhere safe."
He pulls his hand away, and the rejection hurts more than I expect. "What I need is for you to understand that this isn't about whether you're capable. It's about me not being able to focus on anything else if you're in danger."
"Then that's your problem, not mine."
The words come out harsher than I mean them. Kael's face hardens, and I see his Alpha mask slide into place, the one he uses when he needs to make hard decisions.
"Damon, have the sedatives ready for tomorrow evening," he says without taking his eyes off me. "We move Clara as planned."
"You can't do this," I whisper.
"I can. I'm Alpha. My word is law in this pack."
"I'm not pack. Your laws don't apply to me."
"No, but the bond does. And through it, I can make you sleep whenever I want." He finally looks away, and I see the pain in his expression. "I won't use it unless I have to. But Clara, I will use it. I'll put you to sleep, send you to Colorado, and station guards around you twenty-four seven if that's what keeps you alive."
The betrayal cuts deep. "You'd use the bond against me? Force me to obey?"
"To save your life? Yes." His voice drops to barely a whisper. "I'm sorry. I know it makes me no better than your ex-fiancé. But I'd rather have you hate me and alive than love me and dead."
Tears finally spill down my cheeks. "This isn't love, Kael. Love means trusting each other. It means letting me make my own choices even when they scare you."
"I did that once. Let someone I loved make her own choices about staying with me." His eyes are haunted. "Jessica died screaming, begging me to end her suffering. I won't do that again. Not with you."
The mention of his previous mate shifts something in the room. Damon looks uncomfortable, and I realize we're treading on old wounds that never properly healed.
"I'm not Jessica," I say softly.
"No. You're worse." Kael's voice cracks. "Because I actually believe I could have a future with you. And that makes losing you unbearable."
We stand there in painful silence. I understand his fear… I really do. He's watched women die because of him. He's carrying guilt that would crush most people.
But understanding doesn't make this okay.
"If you send me away," I say carefully, "if you drug me and force me to leave, I'll never forgive you. The bond might keep us connected, but I'll hate you for it. Every day you keep me locked away, I'll hate you a little more."
"I can live with your hatred if it means you're alive."
"Can you? Because I don't think you can." I wipe my tears away roughly. "You need me, Kael. Not just the bond, but me. My support, my trust, my choice to stay. Take that away and what do you have left? An empty connection to someone who resents you?"
He doesn't answer, but I see doubt flicker across his face.
"Let me stay," I plead. "Let me fight. I'm already dying… you said so yourself. At least let me die doing something that matters instead of locked in some safe house wondering if you're okay."
"Clara…"
"Please." I take his hand again, and this time he doesn't pull away. "Trust me to know what I can handle. Trust that I'm strong enough to face this with you."
For a long moment, he just looks at our joined hands. The bond hums between us, and I pour everything I'm feeling through it, my determination, my fear, my absolute refusal to be sidelined while he fights alone.
Finally, he looks at Damon. "Cancel Colorado."
Relief floods through me. "Thank you."
"But," Kael continues firmly, "you stay with guards at all times. You don't leave the secure areas. And if things go bad, you listen to Damon and get to safety. Non-negotiable."
It's not perfect, but it's better than being drugged and shipped away.
"Deal," I agree.
Damon shakes his head. "You're both insane. But at least now you're insane together."
As I leave the study, I feel Kael's eyes on my back. He's still scared. Still doubting. But he chose to trust me anyway.
