Chapter 21 The War

Chapter 21 The War
Kael's POV

"Marcus wants Clara alive. Pass that order down the line."

I hear the Bloodfang commander's voice clearly through the chaos of battle. We're deep in their territory now, a warehouse complex on the edge of the city where Marcus has been stockpiling weapons and supplies.

My warriors move like shadows through the building, taking down guards with brutal efficiency. This is what we do best, swift, silent, deadly.
But that order changes everything.

"Alpha, did you hear that?" Damon's voice comes through the comm device in my ear. "They're not supposed to kill her."

"I heard." I snap the neck of a Bloodfang wolf who gets too close, letting his body drop. "It means Marcus has plans for her."

Plans I don't want to think about.

We push deeper into the complex. The Bloodfangs expected an attack eventually, but not tonight, not here. Our intelligence said this location was lightly guarded.

The intelligence was wrong.
"There are too many," Damon says as we regroup in a storage room. "This was supposed to be a minor outpost."

"Someone told them we were coming." I wipe blood from my face, not mine, thankfully. "They reinforced this place specifically for us."

Around me, my warriors exchange glances. The traitor's shadow hangs over everything we do now. Every plan could be compromised. Every move could be anticipated.

"Should we pull back?" one of the younger wolves asks.
"No. We finish this." I reload my gun, sometimes human weapons are more practical than claws. "Marcus is using this place to stage his assault. We burn it down tonight."

We move out again, but the fighting is harder now. The Bloodfangs aren't just defending, they're hunting. Like they know exactly where we'll be.
Because they probably do.

I'm clearing the second floor when I see him… Marcus Bloodfang himself, standing in what looks like a command center. Maps cover the walls, and I recognize Shadowclaw territory marked in red.
He's been planning this for months. Maybe years.
"Kael Arden." Marcus doesn't seem surprised to see me. "I was wondering when you'd show up."
"Funny, I was wondering when you'd grow the spine to face me directly instead of hiding behind spies and ambushes."

He laughs. "Says the Alpha breaking into my stronghold at midnight."

We circle each other, and I see the other wolves in the room tense. This is it… Alpha versus Alpha. The kind of fight that decides wars.

"Call off your wolves," Marcus says casually. "Surrender the human woman, and I'll let your pack live."

"Clara isn't property to be surrendered."
"No?" He tilts his head. "Then what is she? Your mate? Your weakness? The anchor dragging your pack into extinction?" He moves to one of the maps, tracing the red lines. "Your territory could be mine in a week. Your warriors are distracted, your leadership questioned. All because of one human woman."

"All because you couldn't wait for me to die naturally like every other Arden Alpha."
"Why wait when opportunity presents itself?" Marcus spreads his hands. "The prophecy says a human woman can break your curse. Imagine if that power belonged to me instead. Imagine Bloodfang Alphas ruling these mountains for generations, blessed instead of cursed."
So that's his game. He doesn't just want Clara dead… he wants to steal the curse-breaking power for himself.
"She's not some magical battery you can plug into," I say.
"Isn't she? She heals you with a touch. She's already changing, becoming something between human and wolf. That power can be transferred, redirected." His eyes gleam with ambition. "Elara the witch confirmed it herself."
My blood runs cold. "You've been talking to Elara?"
"She has no loyalty to you, Kael. Just to whoever pays her price." Marcus grins. "And I pay very well."
I lunge at him, but he's ready. We crash together, and the room erupts into violence. His wolves against mine. Alpha against Alpha.
Marcus is strong… stronger than I expected. He's been preparing for this fight while I've been distracted trying to save Clara.
"You're weakened," he says as we grapple. "The bond is draining you both. In a month, maybe less, you'll be too weak to fight. And when that happens, I'll take everything. Your territory, your pack, your mate."
"She'll never bond with you."
"She will if it means saving you." He throws me off, and I crash into a desk. "That's the beautiful part. The curse demands willing sacrifice. And Clara strikes me as the martyring type."
I force myself up, ribs aching. "You don't know her."
"I know humans. They're predictable. Give them a noble cause and they'll walk into fire." He pulls out a knife… silver, like the one from Clara's dream, though I don't know that yet. "When the blood moon rises, I'll offer her a choice. Watch you die slowly, or bond with me and save everyone. Which do you think she'll choose?"
"I'll kill you before that happens."
"You're welcome to try."
We fight again, destroying the command center in the process. Papers scatter, maps tear, furniture splinters.
But Marcus is right… I'm weakened. The bond with Clara takes more from me than I've admitted. Every day it drains a little more, making me slower, less focused.
A gunshot rings out, and Marcus stumbles. Damon stands in the doorway, weapon raised.
"Alpha, we need to go," he shouts. "The whole place is coming down."
I see smoke pouring through the ventilation system. Someone set charges… probably one of my wolves following protocol.
Marcus clutches his shoulder where the bullet hit. "This isn't over, Arden."
"It will be. Soon."
We retreat through the building as it burns. Bloodfang wolves scramble to escape alongside us… nobody wants to die in a fire.
Outside, I count my warriors. Three missing. Two badly injured. But alive.
The warehouse explodes behind us, lighting up the night sky.
"Did we get what we came for?" Damon asks.
"We destroyed their supplies. Set back their timeline." I watch the flames. "But Marcus made his intentions clear. He wants Clara alive. Wants to use her to steal the curse-breaking power."
"Can he do that?"
"I don't know. But he believes he can. And he has resources… money, warriors, apparently witches willing to help him."
We drive back to pack territory in silence. My mind races through everything Marcus said. The traitor. The blood moon. His plan to force Clara into bonding with him.
It all comes down to one thing… Clara is the key to breaking the curse, and everyone knows it now. Marcus wants her power. The traitor wants her gone. And I want her alive, even if it means staying cursed forever.
Back at the mansion, I head straight to check on her. The guards outside her room assure me she's sleeping, but I need to see for myself.
She's curled up in bed, looking fragile in the moonlight. Alive. Safe. For now.
But Marcus is right about one thing… the bond is draining both of us. I can feel it, a constant pull on my strength. And Clara's getting weaker every day.
We have maybe a month before the bond kills her. Maybe less.
And in six weeks, there's a blood moon. Whatever ritual or sacrifice the prophecy demands, it will happen then.
I kneel beside her bed, watching her breathe. This war started as a curse problem. An ancient prophecy playing out across generations.
Now it's about survival. Clara's life, my pack's future, Marcus's ambition… all tangled together in a mess I don't know how to untangle.
The only thing I know for certain is that I will not let Marcus take her. I don't care what powers he thinks he can steal, what rituals he believes will work.
Clara is mine to protect. And I'll burn the world before I let him touch her.
Even if protecting her means keeping secrets. Even if it means making choices she'd hate me for.
Because the alternative… losing her… isn't something I can survive.
