Chapter 76 CHAPTER 76
Michael's POV
The knock on the door was persistent and growing irritating with each minute. I looked up at Jasper.
“Tell her she can't come in right now,” I said, my eyes still fixed on the screen.
I was actively following the team that had gone to track Evelyn based on the call she had made. Based on the reports on the screen, they were in a town called Green Town.
Jasper walked to the door and opened it slightly.
“You can't-”
He didn't finish his statement before she pushed the door against him and threw it open. Our eyes met.
“What's going on here?” She asked. “I've been trying to reach you all day.”
I glared at Jasper. How could he let Rosaleen push him off? “I'm busy. I'm working on something.”
She crossed her arm. “Busy? Is it something that I cannot know about? Why all the secrecy?”
“You are in my space, Rosaleen. I'm trying to focus. Leave, please.”
She stood her ground. “I am your fiancée, Michael. Is this what I think it is? You are going after Evelyn Moon.”
I slapped the laptop shut.
“Rosaleen,” Jasper said, edging towards her.
“After all she made us go through? You still want her? Is that it?” She said, brushing Jasper's hand away as she inched forward.
I rose up. “What the hell are you talking about?”
She scoffed. “Isn't this about Evelyn? I know it is.”
“Why the hell will I be looking for her? Is there any reason why, Rosaleen?”
She glanced at the laptop. “Let me see what you're up to then.”
I moved away from the laptop. “Be my guest.”
She walked with vengeance in her eyes to the laptop and opened three screens. A stocks market's page met her eyes. She closed the window and checked all other windows. When she found nothing, she straightened up.
“I thought you.. you've been behaving sneaky, Michael!” She cried.
“No, Rosaleen. Tell me why you thought I would be looking for Evelyn.”
She moved away. “I heard you during the party. Someone called you and you mentioned her name.”
“What?”
“I heard you,” she continued.
I looked at Jasper. We were thinking the same thing. If she had heard me, then she might have alerted Xavier and they'd be gone before the tracker got to them.
“You are mistaken, Rosaleen,” I managed to say. I moved her gently towards the door. “It's a busy time at the market. I need to focus please."
She looked at me, knowing I was lying but she had no way to prove it.
“When will you be done?" She asked.
“5pm.” I pulled out a card from my pocket. “Shop as much as you want today. Make yourself happy.”
She smiled as she pulled the card from my hand. “I'll do that.” She looked at Jasper and then back at me. “Enjoy your day, gentlemen.”
I locked the door as soon as she left. I sighed. Jasper laughed. “It's almost as though you've been the married one here.”
I returned to my seat.
“How did you hide the stuff? “ he asked, moving forward.
I pulled a drawer open and brought out the laptop we'd been using earlier. Jasper went into a fit of laughter.
“Not too loud, Jasper. Whatever we are doing here isn't funny.”
He choked a little bit. “You are insane, Alpha Michael. Damn! I wouldn't have thought of that.”
I replaced the laptop. “You have a lot to learn.”
We fell into a quiet solitude suddenly.
He said what I was afraid to say. “Do you think they'll still be there?”
I clenched my teeth. “I won't forgive myself if we lose her because of my carelessness, Jasper.”
“I'm sorry for not trusting your judgement about her before. And I promise you, we'll get her even if we have to turn the earth upside down.”
I nodded. I believed him.
I stared at the computer screen and hoped we were not too late.
They were traced to an exclusive hotel in town. The manager refused to give out details of those in the hotel without a warrant. I requested to speak to him.
“This is Alpha Michael Greywood,” I said, connecting to him via video call.
“Alpha Michael,” he exclaimed. “Your father is a great patron of our hotel. I had no idea it was you.”
“I thought so,” I said.
“What can I do for you, sir?”
“I want access to the guest book. A friend of mine is missing and she was traced to your hotel.”
He grunted and said something about tight security.
“I'll check the logs, Alpha Michael,” he said. “Give me a minute.”
He moved away. I muted my mic.
“This is it,” I said.
Jasper moved closer. “It's almost over.”
The manager returned. “I'm back. Name, please.”
“Evelyn Moon. Or Xavier Heart. I'm not sure they'd register with their real names.”
His brows furrowed and he confirmed my fears. “No such records.”
I exhalled sharply. “Check the records. A man and a woman. I'll send you pictures of both of them right now. Look into your system.”
I forwarded their pictures to him and he started looking.
“I have to find it manually because we can match faces with pictures,” he explained.
I wanted him to stop talking and just give me answers.
“We get over a hundred guests here on a normal day,” he continued.
I gritted my teeth.
Finally, he said, “found it!”
He zoomed into their profiles. “I guess fake names were used, Alpha Michael. The lady was also signed in as a dependent.”
“Where are they now? I need you to provide their room numbers to the trackers.”
He scrolled briefly and his face fell. “They've checked out,” he said. It seemed as though my heart stopped for a moment.
“This afternoon. Apparently, the lady destroyed some properties and tried to jump out of the window. It's on record here that she's suffering from bipolar or manic disorder.”
I was too late.
