Chapter 164 CHAPTER 164
Evelyn’s POV
The house remained still as we weighed the options in our mind. The plan sounded great. It would keep mum busy and perhaps, it was a way of connecting with one of our kind. But i wanted to know if she really wanted it.
“You can always say no,” i said to her. “I know you hate to get involved with the Greywoods.”
She twisted her fingers and cracked her knuckles. “I want to help her,” she said. “She’s suffering.”
I knew she was thinking about how helping had gotten her and aunt Maya into trouble last time.
“Things will be different this time,” she said. “There’ll be a lawyer and a contract.” she looked at me, uneasily. “Nothing will go wrong this time, will it?”
I tried to promise her but i couldn’t guarantee.
I decided that Shane would draw up the legal contract. Alpha Michael and Alpha Raymond could only see Philly at designated times and we would all be present. No one was to know that she was living with my mother. There was going to be strong security in my mother’s house. We signed the agreement after about two hours.
I also slipped in my own bargain as alpha Michael and i strolled in front of the house. “The deal stays,” i said.
He swung his arm over my shoulder and pulled me closer to him playfully. “You don’t need to make it part of the deal, Evelyn Moon. I owe it to you to keep the deal open.”
My mind and my heart was busy racing from the simple act he had just done. The wind blew in my hair, sending strands across my face. His hair was ruffled too from constantly running his fingers through it. And it was a relief to get some air since the apartment was choking.
“Let’s go out,” he said. “Just you and me and our baby. We should spend some time together.”
Perhaps there was something in the air that evening, because i found myself smiling and nodding in excitement. I wasn’t thinking about what hell Rosaleen would set loose or what the headlines would say. Alpha Michael was mine before everyone else, and if things had worked out, we would still be together. So i was not going to hold back and say no to a date.
“When?” i asked.
“Tomorrow,” he replied.
I tugged at his arm. “I know your dad has been fooling around with my mum,” i said.
I sensed the unease in his body.
“I only found out this evening,” he said and stopped walking. “I’m sorry about that. I’ve spoken to him and i’ll speak to him again.
When i returned to the house, mum was sorting her groceries in the kitchen. I leaned against the kitchen door and watched her. Her mind was so distracted from her surrounding that she didn’t notice me standing there until she turned.
“You startled me,” she said, moving awkwardly to the refrigerator.
I drummed on the door frame. “Are you okay?”
She shrugged. “Yeah. why?”
I stepped in. “Just confirming.” i eyed the parcels from where i stood. “You should stop receiving those gifts, mum. The sender clearly has no good intentions.” i looked at her, hoping she would not make me spill out the identity of Alpha Raymond.
A frown crossed her face as she tied up her silver hair up. “I was going to stop receiving them without you saying it, Evelyn,” she replied. “He stood me up the other day. It seems he’s a freak or something.”
I laughed at her choice of word.
“I’m taking the gifts to charity next week,” she added and made clattering noises with the pots. I knew she was upset. But it was best we ended something as absurd as this before she even found out. I wasn’t sure what had come over Alpha Raymond that he was sending her those parcels and notes. I’d watched him when he came that evening. He barely said a word to her, barely looked at her and i don’t know why i felt even angrier.
“Good choice,” i said.
“It’s getting late,” she said. “When will you get home to Michael?”
“I’m sleeping over tonight, and maybe for the next few days. I have to make sure you are okay. The nanny will bring him over.”
I took a can of yoghurt and poured some into a cup. “I’ll be going out with Alpha Michael tomorrow,” i said and raised the glass cup to my mouth.
She was silent.
I lowered the cup and wiped the frothy remnant from my lips. “It’s just a get together time with our son.”
“I see the way you look at each other,” she said, chopping some carrots. “You can’t deceive me, Evelyn.”
I laughed. “Nothing gets past you, does it?”
“You are poking a dangerous snake, evelyn. You’ve been through so much with these people, why can’t you learn to walk away and keep the door shut?
My eyes stung at her words. “Mum-”
“He’s married now. He chose her. Choose yourself please. Let him go,” she said facing me.
“He didn’t choose her,” i said, fighting the tears in my eyes. “He had to do it to save his mum. Rosaleen found out the truth.”
She sighed. “Love doesn’t hide in the face of truth, Evelyn. If his love for you can’t stand because he’s afraid of the truth, then it’s not love.”
She turned away and continued chopping at her carrots. I thought of her words. Alpha Michael was not afraid of the truth, he was just afraid that the truth would hurt someone. He had openly declared his love for me in the heat of his father’s election.
Before i could say a word, the door was pushed open and Philly walked in. she was a frightful person to look at initially. But her eyes remained fixed on me and they softened.
“You must be Evelyn,” she said. “My son’s fated mate.”
