Chapter 165 CHAPTER 165
Evelyn’s POV
She stepped forward and placed her hand on me. My heart beat wildly in my chest. I had heard of how violent she could be. I’d heard of how she’d ripped off Rosaleen’s face. Her hand was soft on my shoulder and her eyes were calm.
“Evelyn,” she called my name again and a smile stretched on her lips.
I felt my heart squeeze. “Hello, Philly. It’s good to meet you.”
Mum stepped closer to us. “Did you sleep well?” she asked her as one would ask a familiar person. Or a friend.
“Very well,” she said. I noticed her silver hair too, like mum’s. “What are you cooking?”
“I’m just canning some supplies,” mum replied and i watched them as though i was in trance. “Are you hungry?”
Her hand dropped from my shoulder and held her stomach. “A little,” she said. She faced me. “Your mother is a great cook.”
I nodded.
She walked forward and joined mum by the sink and i felt like a hypocrite. I had judged her before i met her by the things i had heard about her. The same way others have judged us.
–
I told myself that it was just a hangout but i found myself checking the time and worrying about what i wanted to wear. When it was midday, i closed from work and returned home. I went through my clothes, selecting about five. I tried them all and settled for an inky black satin with the perfect neckline.
When I turned to my side and my eyes fell on my pouch, i hated the dress immediately. I spent the next few hours looking for something that would be sexy and still conceal my pouch. I was not successful. By 6pm, i collapsed on the bed, sad and angry. I closed my eyes and tried to sleep, turned off my phone and stared at the ceiling.
I woke up minutes later to the sound of someone banging on my door. I knew it was Alpha Michael. I stared at the clock. It was past 9pm. The date was meant to be 8pm. I rolled off the bed and kicked the dresses littered on the floor to a pile in the corner. Then i wiggled out of the last dress i had tried and slipped into a robe.
He stood in front of the door, looking concerned. I saw the look of relief sweep over his face shortly as he saw me. Then he became concerned again.
“It’s tonight,” he said. “Are you having a bad wardrobe day?”
I thought of what mum had said the previous day. Perhaps this was a sign that i shouldn’t go out with him. Maybe i should just let go.
“I hate how i look,” i said instead.
He was puzzled. “What do you mean?” he stepped forward and i stepped away from the doorway. We walked into the apartment.
I was embarrassed when he saw the pile of dresses on the floor. He was trying his best to keep a straight face.
“These are all pretty dresses,” he said.
I frowned. “The problem is me. Are you trying to be funny?”
He shook his head. “Then let’s get you something that’s perfect.” he picked the inky black dress. “This.”
“You are making fun of me, Alpha Michael,” i said.
“I promise you, if you don’t love it, i won’t make an attempt to make you try something else again,” he said.
I took the dress and sighed. When he stepped out of the room, i slipped into the dress one more time and looked at how perfect it was on me without looking at my profile view. I saw it in his eyes too when he walked into the room. He wrapped his arm around my waist and planted a kiss on my neck.
“This is perfect,” he said, his lips still lingering on my neck.
I wanted to tell him that it looked bad when i viewed it from the side, but his hands were already undoing the rolls and my hair was falling in curls over my shoulders.
“You are the most beautiful woman in the whole world,” he said, his hands easing down my waist until they settled possessively on my hips.
“Michael-”
He hushed me and pulled me closer into him. He whispered words i couldn’t remember into my ears and i laughed.
“We could have an indoor date,” i suggested.
He shook his head. “No I want the whole world to see how breathtakingly beautiful you are.”
I thought of what Philly had said minutes later as i sat in the back seat of his car with him and little Michael. That night i wondered what Rosaleen must have really done for Philly to have attacked her as i leaned against his shoulder and listened to the music playing gently.
I didn’t feel a bit ugly since he reassured me. I saw the look in his eyes when i finally stepped out with my finished look and i longed for him to look at me that way everyday.
The restaurant was the one he had first proposed to me in. At that rooftop where he had slipped the most beautiful ring into my finger.
Little Michael was wedged across his chest and i laughed hard when he told him that this was where he had brought me that night he was formed.
“I’m sorry we had to burden your mum with Philly,” he said.
“She’s been quite friendly,” i said. “We spoke for a while yesterday and she even helped mum cook.”
He looked surprised to hear that.
“Why did she attack Rosaleen?” i asked. “Was there any reason why?”
He looked at me and shook his head. “She hasn’t spoken much words to us except ask for Anna. you could ask her since she’s talking to you. I want to know why too.”
I nodded. Beside us, i saw a man who had been watching us. Our eyes met again and he moved them away quickly. I felt an unease in my chest.
