Chapter 142 CHAPTER 142
Philly leaned against the kitchen counter and felt the sharp pain kick in her abdomen again. Her hands trembled as she reached for the pan on the stove. She successfully placed it on the counter and turned off the gas. Minutes ago, when she went to the bathroom she had seen streaks of red in her urine. That was when the first contraction hit.
She was sweating profusely and her breath was coming out in short gasps. She knew it was the herbs she had taken. She shouldn't have trusted him. She had looked into his eyes and she knew he wanted things to end silently. A baby was not in his plans.
Her knuckles turned red as she gripped the counter tightly. When the pain subsided, she looked at her phone. The network signal was still weak and the call was still trying to connect.
“Please. Please,” she cried.
She didn't know anyone around. Alpha Raymond had moved them into the apartment about a year ago, and she had only managed to make friends with the gardener. The same man she was sure had poisoned her.
She tried to lean up and a plate clattered to the floor. She could feel her breath becoming even shorter and her nails were getting blue. She had to save her baby. Even if she died. She let out a cry as she pushed herself off the counter completely. There was a knife in her hand. She didn't know how but she was going to get the baby out.
The first cut was overpowering and painful. She cried out loudly and the knife fell off her hand. She laid on the ground, panting as blood trickled onto the floor. There was no time left.
She closed her eyes and tried to numb the pain. If she could shift to her fox form, perhaps it would be less painful. But she wanted to be in control. So she grabbed the knife again.
Someone screamed and something tumbled on the floor. She looked up. Her vision was blurry but when it finally steadied, she saw a young woman staring at her in shock.
“Are you hurt, ma'am?”
“Help me,” she whispered, still clutching to the knife.
Maya looked at her, unsure of which help she could provide. “I'll call the hospital."
“No,” she said with all her might. “It'll be too late.” She stretched the knife towards her and drew in a short breath. “Help me get my baby out.”
Maya stared at the abdomen that was now stained with blood.
“Were you trying to…?”
“What's your name?” She asked, her lips parched and her throat dry. She could feel herself going.
“Maya,” she said, trembling. She hadn't taken a step forward. “I work as a cleaner at…”
“Maya,” she called out weakly. “Take out my baby. Its all I want. Please.”
Maya stepped forward and took the knife that had now fallen to the floor. Her hand shook and she closed her eyes.
“Do it,” Philly pressed.
She closed her eyes and thought of beautiful memories. Then her heart boiled and she thought of revenge. She didn't feel the pain of the blade. It didn't compare to the betrayal. She shifted just as the pain became unbearable.
Maya gasped, seeing the shifted fox form. She had just cut open enough to pull out the baby. She held her. Unresponsive.
She realised then that she didn't even know the woman's name. Her hand was covered with blood, with splashes on her dress. She had called Anna earlier and she arrived just as the baby arrived.
Anna looked at her disapprovingly. “She's the wife of Alpha Raymond. He'll hunt us if he finds out what happened.”
“She begged me to help,” Maya said.
Anna stepped forward and took the baby. She looked at her and got to work immediately. In a few seconds, the baby was crying. Maya took the baby to clean up and to clean up herself.
Anna stood in the middle of the mess, wondering what it could mean for them. Suddenly, she felt someone grab her feet. It was the lady.
“I need a favour,” she said. “You are a fox just like I am. I would wander restlessly if I didn't have my vengeance.”
Anna stilled. She knew what the woman was asking her. It was something only special fox breeds like both of them could do.
“I can't,” she said. “Your baby will be taken care of. My sister should never have done this.”
“Please,” she begged. “It's just the only request I have.”
She was asking for Anna's body to contain her fox so she could take vengeance on the man that had poisoned her. Anna had seen it done once. It was a dangerous thing to have two foxes in one body.
“Please.”
She looked around. She saw the picture of a young boy smiling brightly. There was a man standing beside him and on the other end was the woman.
She closed her eyes. “What's your name?” She asked.
“Philly…”
It happened fast. When Anna opened her eyes, she was being driven by a force that was beyond her control. She knew that Philly felt rage but she didn't know just how much rage her wolf felt. She walked out of the house, across the field. She stopped in front of one of the houses that punctuated the open field. She didn't knock. She pushed the door and it opened.
The man was shocked to see her. He was in bed with another woman. The woman gasped and answered to wrap whatever she could find over her body.
“Who are you and how dare you barge in here?”
She didn't say much. She had a knife in her hand. In three quick strokes, she took his life away.
“For Philly,” she said as she pulled the knife out.
Madeline stood there, transfixed. Anna collapsed on the floor as Philly's wolf tried to escape out of her. She lost control and a portion of her remained.
When she opened her eyes minutes later, Madeline wasn't alone. She was with Maya. And Anna felt a tightness within her; she knew that part of Philly had remained.
