Chapter 143 CHAPTER 143
Michael's POV
“What favour?” I asked.
She looked away and I saw how she squeezed her fingers nervously. “There are a lot of things about your mother that you don't know,” she said instead.
I moved uneasily. “You were with her before she died. Tell me what happened. I know it wasn't you or your sister who killed her. Who did?”
She lowered her head and stared at her fingers. “Part of your mother is in me,” she said. Then she looked up. “Before she died, she asked me to house her fox. She wanted to avenge the man who killed her.”
My heart thrummed in my chest. “What do you mean?”
She raised her hand and squeezed her chest. “She's been lying dormant for a while but she stirs whenever Alpha Raymond is near.”
“What are you talking about?” I asked.
She looked down again. I could see she was struggling to explain herself to me.
“When I went into a coma for so many years,” she said without looking up. “It was because my body could not contain two dominant foxes. One had to lay low.”
I blinked, unwilling to interrupt her.
“She killed the man that poisoned her.”
“Poisoned?” I asked. “Who was the man?”
“He was a gardener,” she replied. “I don't know much about what happened.”
Jasper joined us suddenly. “Anna and Rosaleen are here,” he said. “They are causing a scene.”
I felt my head go hot at the mention of their names. They were the ones that had kept me occupied while Xavier laid hands on Evelyn again.
“I'll be back,” I said to Anna as I rose on my feet.
They were at the waiting area. Anna was leaning against a wall, uninterested about what was going on. Rosaleen was talking to the receptionist.
“What are you doing here?” I asked.
She spun around when she heard my voice and half smiled. “We heard the news and we wanted to say congratulations. And offer our condolences.”
My jaw muscles tightened as I leaned closer to her. “You've played all your cards now, Rosaleen. And you're moving in dangerous water.”
Her face softened. “What are you saying, Alpha Michael. We only came to see the baby.” She brought out her phone. “The news is all over the place.”
I bit my lips. “Get out.”
Anna popped her gum loudly and more irritation crossed her face. “Let’s go, Rosaleen,”she said.
I gestured at the security men to move her away from the hospital.
She crossed her hand over her chest and just then Alpha Raymond walked into us.
“Alpha Raymond,” she called out, walking towards him. “We came to see your grandchild.”
He saw the anger on my face. “You shouldn’t be here,” he replied.
Anna huffed. “We didn't want to be here. But she's going to be a Greywood soon, and I'm part of this family. We just wanted to meet the new baby.”
“That's thoughtful of you,” he said.
I watched him. His mask was getting off. I knew he had been pretending all along to be excited to meet his grandchild or care about Evelyn. I thought of what Miss Anna had said to me. Perhaps we were mistaken. Alpha Raymond must have killed my mother and he wanted Anna Trent gone too.
I began to walked away but he stopped me. He spoke under his breath, which was something he didn't do usually. “Let's talk privately. Now.”
There was an urgency in his voice thay made me uneasy. He had been behaving strange and this request was even stranger.
“Outside.”
I pulled myself form his grip and walked away angrily. I was tired of his manipulation to care about the urgency in his voice. I was angry that he was taking Rosaleen’s side and accepting an imposter as his child. I was angry because I knew he was pretending to care for anyone but himself.
When I returned, Anna Trent was in the same position asylum she was when I left. I slumped on the chair and exhaled sharply. She noticed the change in my mood but she said nothing.
I closed my eyes and tried to imagine everything she had said.
“Did she tell you any other thing thay day?” I asked, my eyes still shut. “Did she talk about me? Can I speak to her?”
“No,” she replied, answering all my questions.
Finding out the truth about the circumstances of my mother's death was more painful than imagining she had been attacked. She was having an affair and she was killed by that same man. I guess he got to her before Alpha Raymond did.
“I'm sorry for all the pains we've caused you,” I said opening my eyes. “I had no idea your coma was because of my… my mother.”
She nodded.
“Does she want to kill Alpha Raymond too?” I asked suddenly.
She shook her head. “I think she's sad. They betrayed each other.”
I thought of Evelyn again. “I wish she didn't have to get mixed up in all these mess,” I said.
She said nothing.
We sat in silence for a while. I wanted to ask her a couple of things but I felt she had suffered too much on our behalf. She had to be separated from her daughter and husband. She was in coma for many years. And she was labelled a killer when she was only trying to save.
It was about an hour later when I got up. She was already asleep, her head hung to her side. She was snoring lightly. I watched her for a few minutes and wondered if my own mother could see me through her. Before I left, I threw a blanket over her.
I walked outside and stood under the dark, starless sky my hands were pocketed and I exhaled deeply. Someone walked to my side and stopped. I didn't need to turn to know that it was Alpha Raymond.
“You were right,” he said, staring ahead. “She was alive when help came.”
Silence stretched between us.
“She's alive.”
