Chapter 112
Helene.
"Hi," I greeted Hunter nervously with a small smile as soon as I opened the door and saw that it was finally him.
"Hi, sweetie," he responded with a weird smile before letting himself in and I immediately felt like something was off about him.
"I thought you'd never show up," I said, attempting to start a conversation even though I wasn't too sure what exactly we could talk about.
"I did say that I was going to get back here as soon as I could, so here I am," he responded, earning a mock annoyed frown from me.
"So it took you an entire day to handle whatever it is that Damon called you in for yesterday? Are you going to tell me that and expect me to believe you?" I asked, and he smiled.
"Well, what Damon called me in for wasn't the only thing I had to handle and I was thinking of taking a break and resting instead of coming here but I missed you way too much to stay away for too long," he answered and I sighed.
"What's the problem, Hunter? What's going on with you?" I asked after confirming that something was really up with him.
I didn't make any attempt to read through his emotions so that he doesn't notice but I was able to guess that something wasn't right with him because he had this weird look on his face that I've come to realize he only ever has when something is bothering him.
"Did you read into my emotions?" he asked.
"I didn't even need to go that far, Hunter. It's more than obvious that something is bothering you and I'm pretty sure you came here knowing very well that I would notice that there was something off," I responded and he let out a dry laugh.
"Can I get a hug first?" he requested and without wasting a second, I moved closer to him and wrapped my arms tightly around him.
He did the same as well and we both just stood there for a while, taking in each other's embrace.
"What's wrong, Hunter? Did something happen?" I asked, letting go of him and getting him to look me in the eye.
"Brenda and I broke up," he announced and my jaw dropped.
"Wait, what? What happened? Did you guys get into a fight?" I asked, not knowing if I should react happily, pretend to be sad, or be disappointed by the fact that he was sad.
I could understand the reason why he may not be as ecstatic as I was since he was the one in the relationship with her and they've been together for so many years but it was still slightly disappointing to see him look so gloomy over their break up.
"Aren't you supposed to be happy? You know you don't have to pretend just because of the look on my face," he commented and I tried not to frown at him.
"Am I supposed to be happy about the fact that the man I like came to see me and he has a sad look all over his face because he just broke up with his now ex-girlfriend? Is there anything exciting about that?" I replied, trying not to express too much that I was not too happy with how he looked.
"This is exactly why I felt like it would be best not to come here today. I didn't want to hurt your feelings by expressing myself like this in front of you and I'm sorry if I'm putting you in a weird situation," he apologized.
"Apologising isn't going to do anything exactly so how about you just talk to me and explain why you feel the way you feel so that you can get it out of your system," I offered.
As annoying as it was that he was in this state, I decided that I was going to be understanding because I couldn't relate to the emotions that he was probably feeling right now and I couldn't expect him to just pretend like all the years he spent being with Brenda meant nothing to him.
"Can I do that?" he asked and I nodded for him to go ahead.
I took his hand in mind and escorted him to a seat and he willingly followed beside me.
"I know you think that I'm sad right now because of how things ended between Brenda and me and even though I can't deny the fact that it's quite disappointing that things had to end this way between us, I'm not exactly sad about it because it's something that should have happened long before you even showed up but I just kept enduring and overlooking so many things to the point where it's all just piled up and got out of hand," he started and I calmly listened.
"I found out yesterday that Brenda was the one that reported your location to your father and that to me, was the biggest blow," he told me and I was immediately shocked.
"She did what? How did that happen? How did she find out who I was?" I asked, wondering how she could have ever found out about my father and where I was from.
"I truthfully have no idea how she found out but I wouldn't put it past her since she's the kind of person who always figures out things just as long as she sets her mind to it. When I found out, I was so upset and disappointed because I just wanted to believe that she wasn't going to foolishly do something like that but she ended up making me feel like a fool and that was just the end for me,"
"She came over earlier today, we got into an argument, and in the process of arguing, I ended up confronting her about what she did and she didn't even feel any sort of remorse for the choice that she made. She kept on trying to justify herself and at that moment, I just knew there was no point talking to her or trying to get her to become a better person," he explained and I sighed.
"How did she take it?" I asked.
"She didn't take it very well but I just couldn't bring myself to care because she brought it upon herself and I was the foolish one for realizing way too late that my relationship with her was nothing but a burden on me. I was too prideful to admit that it just wasn't working and that's how things ended up becoming this messy," he answered and I didn't know what else to say to him.
"Are you going to be fine? Do you think you can cope? Cause I mean, you two have been together for a very long time and it might be weird for you for a while that she's no longer a part of your life," I said, trying to sound as neutral as possible without letting my emotions get involved in my attempt to console him.
"I think I feel a lot better now that I know that she's no longer a part of my life than I did when I kept worrying about how to keep her in check and make sure she doesn't make a mistake. You can be rest assured that I'm not going to dwell on this for too long and I'm talking to you about this because I just want to let it all out and slowly forget about it," he replied and I chuckled.
"Take your time, cutie. I'll wait for you," I said to him and I meant it.
I was willing to wait as long as I needed to for him to get himself together and resolve whatever feelings he had left for her just as long as I was assured that he would eventually get over them and be mine completely.
"You would?" he asked.
"Sure thing but you have to promise me that you're not going to take too long worrying about her. I want you to be mine completely and I'm willing to wait until the other woman is completely out of your mind," I answered and he chuckled.
"That's the hottest thing you've ever said to me," he teased and I rolled my eyes at him.
"I wasn't attempting to be hot, I was being serious. I want you to think things over carefully for as long as you need to so that you can be very sure of how you feel about me and put aside every other feeling that is currently bothering you. I wouldn't want things between us to start with you going through any sort of emotional turmoil, so feel free to take as much time as you need to sort out your thoughts," I responded.
He smiled. "You don't have to worry about anything, sweetie. When it comes to my feelings, I'm already a hundred percent sure of how I feel at the moment. It will take me time to finally get over everything that happened with Brenda but I promise not to take too much time and once I'm finally out of that phase, I'll express myself even more to you," he assured and I placed my hand softly on his cheek with a small smile tugging on my lips.
"Your assurance is more than enough for me and I'm going to take your word for it and expect you soon," I responded, placing a small kiss on his lips and attempting to pull away but he pulled me back and deepened the kiss and I found myself getting lost in the kiss with him, that I didn't even realize how much time was passing.
