Chapter 111
Hunter.
"Hold on a second and repeat what you just said, bro. You broke up with who?" Damon asked.
"With Brenda, you idiot!" I replied snappily, hating that he was making me repeat myself.
He gasped dramatically, with his eyes growing two times wider and both his hands placed over his mouth.
"You broke up with Brenda? Like the same Brenda that I've known for about fifteen years that hasn't left your side for a second in the last fifteen years?" he asked and I didn't even bother responding to him because I knew he was just being dramatic.
"Bro, what happened? How did it even happen?" he asked.
"I thought you'd be ecstatic about this happening since you've always wanted me to end things with her. How does what happened matter?" I replied boldly and he frowned.
"Are you kidding me? Why wouldn't it matter? I mean, I'm very happy for you right now cause you're finally free from that curse but I need to understand how it finally happened before I can fully celebrate such good news," he responded and I scoffed.
"I honestly don't even know how to explain how it happened. She just suddenly showed up at my place and I tried warning her that I wasn't in a good mood because I was upset with her and I was still trying to deal with the disappointment but she just kept going on and on and we ended up having a crazy back and forth. She questioned my relationship with Helene and I confronted her about her visit to Helene's father and the whole thing just blew up like that," I explained.
"Did something happen between you and Helene?" he asked.
"Is that what's important?" I hissed at him.
"Of course, that is also very important but before I get into that fully, keep explaining how the break-up happened with Brenda cause I need to get the full gist. I know you're going to call me weird, but you have no idea how long I've been waiting for this to happen and I cannot afford to not get the full scoop," he chirped excitedly and I could not believe that he was enjoying something depressing to me.
"You do realize that I'm not in the best mood right now and your attitude is only making it worse, right?" I pointed out.
He sighed. "I love you, bro, I do but you cannot expect me not to enjoy this moment. I hate to see you sad but you're eventually going to realize that this is the best thing to ever happen to you. Your relationship with Brenda has always been toxic and that girl has never been anything but trouble for you. For heaven's sake, you should have known she was a red flag from the time she caused a rift between you and Dre and still pretended like she did nothing wrong," he replied.
"You going to see that I'm stupid for still defending her but Brenda is not as bad as everyone thinks she is or at least, she wasn't as bad. Yes, she had her horrible side where she just acted crazy once in a while and all that but she was also really kind and it's just sad that she's allowed her negative aspects to outweigh her positives," I said, still defending her character.
"You know what's even worse, Damon, it is the fact that I knew our relationship had ended a long time ago but instead of admitting it to myself and just putting an end to it, I kept pushing and pushing to make things work between us because I didn't want to end up proving everyone right. I wanted to prove to everybody that my decision to choose her was the best and that is why I kept indulging everything she did no matter how extreme it was," I admitted out loud for the first time.
"The first step to changing things is by admitting it and the fact that you've now realized that you were overdoing things all this while instead of ending it, means that you're finally snapping out of that pity phase," Damon commented.
"Pity phase? What do you mean by that?" I asked.
"You may not have realized it but I for one believe that you kept using your supposed feelings for Brenda as an excuse when the truth was that you just pitied her and that is why you didn't want to let her go. Now, don't get me wrong, I'm not trying to say that you never loved her but your love for her slowly started to turn into pity and you just didn't realize that there was a difference between feeling sorry for someone and loving someone," he explained.
I was very confused by his conclusion but I didn't even bother trying to argue with him because he may have a point and it's possible that I still have not even realized that what I felt for Brenda was no longer love but pity.
I could admit that at a point I felt really bad because I knew she had no one else but me and I just had this strong obligation to protect her from the world since I was the one that only brought her into my world and promised her that I was always going to be by her side.
I would have never imagined my relationship with Brenda ending this way because she was once upon a time my everything and I believed in her so much that I was willing to argue with everyone else that their opinion about her wasn't valid because they didn't know her as well as I did.
"All of this may be good news to you but it's not good news for me because this is the last thing I would have expected to ever happen. I made up my mind recently that my relationship with her could not continue because I just didn't feel anything for her anymore but I was hoping that we would end things more civilly instead of ending things like we did today," I said.
"Do you want a drink to clear your mind?" he asked.
"No, I don't feel like drinking or even doing anything, bro. I'm supposed to go see Helene right now but I don't think I should see her in this state. She's gonna sense that my mood isn't right and it'd be awkward explaining the situation with Brenda to her," I replied.
"I don't agree though. You should talk to her about these things. She knew you were in a relationship when you two met and eventually, you'll have to tell her things have ended between you and Brenda. Also, don't you think she's a better support system than I am? I'd rather get comfort with Aurora than with you," he stated and I stared back at him with a displeased look.
"Don't you two fight like every other day? I even sometimes wonder how you guys are still together even after all these years. You seem like the perfect definition of a toxic relationship to me," I responded.
He scoffed. "Look who's talking? You were in a toxic relationship for over ten years and you never even realized that you were in one. Aurora and I are the farthest things from being toxic and even though we argue quite often in public, it's simply because we usually have different opinions when it comes to state affairs, which is perfectly normal but outside that, we don't argue about anything else," he replied defensively.
"Sure you don't," I scoffed.
"Now, are you finally going to explain to me the relationship you have with Helene at the moment? It may seem as though something has been happening between you two for a while now and you've been mean enough to keep me in the dark, despite knowing how much I was rooting for you two to get together," he complained.
I scowled at him.
"Things were awkward between us until recently but then, I just finally made up my mind that I was no longer going to lie to myself that I didn't like her because I do like the girl a lot more than I even want to admit," I told him honestly.
"And why can't you admit it? You are now a free and single man who is very much in his right to like someone else and get into a relationship with someone else especially if the person is his destined mate, so why can't you admit you like her a lot more than you thought you did?" he questioned, almost sounding like he had a problem with what I said.
"I know exactly what you're thinking Damon but it's not it. The reason I don't admit it to myself is because it's quite scary how quickly my feelings for her grew. I mean, we don't exactly spend that much time together but every time that I hung out with her, it was always difficult to keep myself in check because I just end up finding the bare minimum attractive when it comes to her," I confessed.
"I used to wonder why someone like her would be my mate because I didn't think I was suitable with girls like her but surprisingly, I now understand why she and I are compatible according to the moon goddess and I don't know, I just really see myself being happy around her without trying too hard," I added and Damon chuckled wickedly.
"That sounds like love to me, buddy," he replied in a squeal-like tone.
"We aren't even in a relationship yet bro. I can admit that I'm attracted to her and I like her but I wouldn't say that I was in love with her just yet. My wolf may be madly in love with her but as for me, it's still a process," I said to him and he smiled.
"Don't worry buddy, you'll figure it out sooner than you think. Anyway, now that I have gotten the information that I wanted from you, I'm going to go share this wonderful news with my lovely girlfriend and I urge you to do the same. Go be with her instead of wallowing away like a depressed man over someone who isn't worth it. Be happy buddy because you're finally free from a decade-long curse," he chuckled happily and I didn't even realize when I also let out a laugh.
