Chapter 106 Untitled Chapter
"No! Don’t!” Rina yelled and tried to stop him but the other mercenary held her fast, and no matter how much she screamed and thrashed about he didn’t release her.
Helpless she watched as he injected the needle into her arm and released all of its poisonous contents into her veins.
When the poison first entered her wolf, she jerked, her body going stiff as a board, eyes blown wide as if in a trance, the colour changing from red to silver and vice versa like her hybrid was fighting to claw out too. Then she started screaming, her body twisting in unimaginable positions as her body tried to drown away the pain.
But there was no getting around it, the poison just sank deeper and deeper, settling into linings and muscles, until her body got weaker and weaker.
It was an awful sight to behold for Rina who sank to the floor unable to keep herself upright for much longer, fat tears streaming down her face in rivulets.
“Just stop. Please. I’ll do whatever you want. Just please stop this torture.” She choked out.
Reneé looked at her with something akin to triumph flickering in her eyes as she watched her kneeling at her feet, tears running down her face.
“You look down right pathetic, kneeling down at my feet, Rina. Is this how you plan to save your kingdom, by begging?” Behind her, the two goons chuckled snidely. “Anyway, there’s nothing I can do for your little wolf. But the pain will stop eventually. I don’t plan on killing her… at least not yet.”
And that part at least was true. After what must have been twenty minutes but felt more like twenty long years to Rina, her wolf’s anguished cries immediately subsided and she became still. If not for her chest riding and falling slowly, she would have feared she were dead.
“It seemed like the aconite mixture has finally worked. ” She snapped her fingers, saying briskly to one of the mercs. “Dagger, remove her from those chains and lay her on the slab over there. And get everything ready, I want to commence with the ritual before more of these pesky palace guards find their way here.”
The cavern became a beehive of activity as her wolf was released from her chains and placed on a stone slab where she was once again shackled.
A long trestle table had been brought into the room and a ceremonial knife, a wooden cup, together with other questionable looking things and something that looked suspiciously like a human tongue were placed on it.
Rina could register these sounds. She could hear the heavy thread of dozens of feet as they all prepared for the ritual, she could even hear Samorah’s grating laughter interspersed with Frieda’s stoic ones but they made no impression on her consciousness
She felt numb, unable to react to anything that was going on around her, her heart felt like it had stopped. It felt she’d also absorbed the same poison as her wolf and it was only a matter of time before she reached near death like her wolf.
She heard the ruffle of the sorceress’s gown and the patter of her feet as she came to stand in front of her and hummed.
“It seems like I grossly underestimated your connection to your wolf. Her pain becomes your pain. But don’t worry, I’ll make the process as painless as I possibly can, okay?” She laughed softly when Rins didn’t even so much as blink.
“What? Don’t tell me I’ve broken you already?” She tsked. “Won’t you even ask me what the ritual is?”
When Rina still didn't answer, she sighed in mock sympathy and squatted down to Rina’s level. “Fine. I’ll tell you all the same. Everything in this world has two predestined fates, you know. When they are created and when they’re destroyed. It’s an unavoidable fact of life. But you see, most people think that death is the final destination. It isn’t. Not really. There’s one more. The destruction of the soul, or as I call it the desonðre.”
Rina’s eyes widened.
“Ah, I can see you’ve heard of it before. As you can probably already guess, it’s not an ordinary ritual. In fact I think you’ve already met someone who has undergone such a ritual before..”
“What are you talking about?” Rina’s voice was hoarse like she had been the one screaming. “I’ve never met anyone like that before.”
“Why Rina dear but you must have an exceedingly short memory. Of course you have or have you forgotten the Three in one being that you’d met at the spirit plane?”
“The Three?” Rina was still confused.
“Yes, The Three or whatever they call themselves these days.” She sneered. “They were just like you, before they got separated and now they’ve become crazy old bats.”
“Just like me?” Something close to horror settled like lead in her belly as she tried to process what the sorceress was trying to tell her. “They were a hybrid too?”
Reneé chuckled unsympathetically. “No my dear, not hybrids. They were moon warriors just like yourself until they were destroyed, just like you will. I will destroy you utterly. I will take your hybrid, your wolf and your soul until you’re nothing but a worthless piece of a shattered whole. That’s my promise to you.”
Rina now understood what this witch wanted to do to her. She didn’t just want to kill her.
No, she wanted to make sure that Rina could never become whole ever again.
