Chapter 277 157| My Girl.

MAXIMUS

I dreaded the fact that my son was mated to my enemy’s daughter, and I was ready to do everything within my power to push them away from each other. But my Luna made me realize that there was nothing I could do about it unless I wanted to break my son. Aside from the fact that they were mates, they shared a rare special mate bond that couldn’t allow them to live without each other. As much as I hated it, I had to come to terms with their mate bond and accept Violet as my daughter-in-law.

Also, I had been the Alpha King for a long time and I was getting old. It was high time I stepped down for the most powerful Alpha to exist in a millennium. Axel hadn’t discovered the full extent of his powers yet. He needed a push, and becoming the Alpha King was that push he needed.

He shook his head. “Dad, I am not ready.”

“You are.” I inched closer to him and placed my hand on his shoulder. “You were born for this.”

He looked at me with confusion in his eyes. “But you are still strong and powerful. Why do you want to step down so early?”

“I am not as powerful as you think I am anymore, Axel. Besides, you are the most powerful Alpha, and the most powerful person in the kingdom is supposed to rule it,” I muttered with my gaze fixed on him.

“No. Don’t sell me that, Father. If you remain the Alpha for twenty more years or even more than that, no one is going to question you.” He shook his head. “I am not ready to take such responsibilities.”

I knew that was what he was afraid of. Even before I brought the matter to him, I knew he wasn’t going to easily accept my proposition. I had expected the blatant refusal.

“Axel, you won’t do it alone. Myself and your mother would always be around to support you,” my voice dropped to a lower tone as I continued, “until you don’t need us anymore.”

Still, he shook his head. “I really cannot do it now.”

“Think about it?” I lifted a brow.

“Dad, it’s—”

“Please.” I interrupted.

He sighed and nodded. “Okay. Fine. But I’m not—”

A knock on the door made him pause.

“Who is it?” I called out.

“Violet,” Axel muttered before she could answer, and the next second he was by the door, opening it for her to enter.

My eyes narrowed as I watched her walk into the office.

“Alpha King Maximus,” she bowed before me.

Before she continued, I spoke first. “I don’t regret killing Silas. He was a bastard that should have been gotten rid of years ago.”

Her fist tightened beside her in suppressed rage.

In a swift move, I unsheathed my sword and handed it to her. “Here. This is your opportunity to avenge his death.”

She hoisted her head, meeting my gaze. Then she took the sword and pointed it at me, a look I couldn’t quite read flicking across her eyes. She held my gaze for an intense minute before throwing the sword to the floor.

Her shoulders straightened, her face devoid of any emotion as she spoke, “You are testing me.”

I folded my arms across my chest. “Am I?”

“I am not going to deny that I hold an immense grudge against you,” she spoke.

“Violet...” Axel called softly.

She ignored him and continued, her voice rising. “I do not plan to seek revenge against you. The both of you were in compliance with the fight that night. Knowing the truth, seeking revenge would be pointless and hypocritical. So, if your fear is that I will betray my mate, lay that fear to rest because I do not have any intention to do that.”

I observed her, looking to see hatred in her eyes, but all I saw was rage and pain. Not an atom of hatred. I did not regret killing Silas, but I felt sorry for her for having a man like Silas as her father.

Through her rage, her innocence was palpable. Axel was right. She was nothing like Nina.

I walked towards the desk and leaned my back on it. I looked at Axel. “Remember what I told you. Think about it with her, because it is a decision that would affect the both of you.”

He nodded firmly as he wrapped his arms around her shoulder. “Let’s go.”

Curiosity filled her eyes, but she didn’t mutter anything until they left the office.

Moments later, a knock sounded on the door and my Luna walked in.

“Those two are so in love,” she muttered as she approached me.

I grabbed her thighs and lifted her onto the desk. I leaned in and planted a kiss on her neck. “Not as in love as I am with you.”

She giggled and wrapped her arms around my neck. “Have you told him about it?”

I nodded. “He said he’s not ready.”

“I knew he was going to say that,” she sighed.

“But he would think about it,” I added.

“Hmm. Okay.” She pressed her lips together. “I am afraid they have reached the most difficult stage of their relationship. They are both the heirs to their kingdoms’ thrones. I am really worried about them. They must be really frustrated.” Sadness flashed across her face. “I wish there was something I could do to help them. But it is a decision they must make by themselves. I feel bad for them for having such complications.”

“The prophecy,” I suddenly said, “the one where the soothsayer said the child born, Axel, would either make the north the strongest kingdom or be the ruin of it. Do you think it’s related to this?”

She had a thoughtful look on and waited for a moment before responding. “Before that prophecy was made, we didn’t know that I was the mother wolf, that I was going to produce the most powerful Alpha. But everything makes sense now. The most powerful Alphas either used their power for good or for bad. The last powerful Alpha, for instance, was so crazed that he destroyed his kingdom and even killed his own mother. The soothsayer didn’t know how our son would turn out—good or bad. To be honest, I was also scared when I found out that I was the mother wolf. But now my mind is fully at rest knowing that our Axel is not like that. He would surely make this kingdom rise to be the most powerful among the four kingdoms. Also, maybe the mate bond that you are so afraid of is the tool that’ll end the unending war between the North and South. Maybe those two would be the ones to bring both kingdoms together.”

I nodded. “That makes sense. I cannot wait to witness him become great.” I raked my fingers through her hair, admiring the beautiful woman in front of me. “You have raised him into the fine young man that he is.”

“We did that together,” she muttered.

After a moment, a worried look suddenly masked her face. My brows furrowed. “What?”

“Nothing. It’s just that Amelia is really worried about Daisy. She said she felt a bad vibe about her mate, Aldric.”

“Maybe it’s the pain of her absence that’s causing that. Letting her go was difficult and I understand. Aldric seems like a decent man.”

“Hmm.” She breathed. “I don’t think it’s just that. Maternal instincts are strong, coupled with the fact that she’s a witch. Considering her abilities again...”

“Did she sense that he was lying about taking care of her? Because I can drive to the west right now and go to my niece!” I interrupted, a hard frown forming on my face.

“That’s the issue. She cannot pinpoint what is wrong. She didn’t sense lies. But...” she sighed and trailed off, worries still evident in her eyes. “You are right. It’s probably just paranoia.”

“If it would make you and Amelia feel better, I would send a spy to watch over her. Okay?”

She nodded. “That would be great.”

My lips sought hers and I kissed her thoroughly, sucking her soft lips like my life depended on it. She reciprocated with the same urge, the same need.

“I love you, Starlette Cromwell. So very much,” I breathed into her mouth.

“I love you too, Maximus Northwood,” she said, as she engaged me in another deep, sweet kiss.

That’s my girl for life.
