Chapter 275 155| Resentments.

VIOLET

I woke up to a sweet smell of cedarwood and sandalwood swifting through my senses, and I snapped my eyes open. Lying beside me was my mate, the one who I had always loved before everything went downhill, laying beside me. He was asleep, with his arm around me.

After everything that happened that night, I had been lost in a deep sorrow, grieving both my father’s death and the loss of my mate. I had said some nasty things I didn’t mean that night.

I didn’t hate him. I could never. After I woke up from the deep sleep Lila had sent me to, the memories of what had happened came crashing through me, along with regrets. I shouldn’t have said everything I said. I was just deeply hurt, and I had let my emotions control me. Though I had asked Axel to stop his father, and he refused, I knew that fight was inevitable. I knew that it was either my father died or his did. And his father won.

So, yes. I knew it wasn’t Axel’s fault. I didn’t hate him. I just didn’t know how to face him after everything I had said. I didn’t know how to face him knowing his father killed mine. Being with him was all shades of wrong after the tragedy that happened. It might only breed resentment between us, and I dreaded that.

“Please forgive,” he suddenly muttered with his eyes still closed. “Please do not send me away. I missed you so much.”

I didn’t say anything in response, I just sucked in a sharp breath.

He finally opened his eyes, the pain he was feeling evident through them. “How do you feel now? You didn’t have to endure that much pain.”

“Axel...” I breathed, tears welling in my eyes.

“Yes, baby,” he stroked my hair gently, “you know I could never stop loving you. So please stop pushing me away. I could go crazy without you in my life. I know it’s hard. But baby, I promise to be with you through it all.”

“You don’t understand.” The tears sprang down my face. “Your father killed mine. Being together doesn’t make any sense at all.”

He was quiet for a moment before speaking. “I understand your pain. Your fears. But, baby, we’ll figure everything out together. Our bond is special, powerful. I am not giving up on you. I am not letting you go. Did you read my texts? I don’t care however long it takes.”

I read his texts. Every single one of them. I read them every day and cried myself to sleep. The pain he felt reflected in every single word.

“It isn’t right, Axel,” I sobbed.

“We can make it right. It won’t be easy. But we could try. Please, Violet. Do not say no.” He sat up, tears forming in his eyes. “Violet, please. Let’s fight through this together. I couldn’t imagine a life without you.”

He was the son of my father’s killer, but he was my heart, my life, and I had since realized that I couldn’t live without him even if I tried.

Without him, this life was meaningless. These past few months without him had been meaningless. I had even lost the will to live through the sickness that befell me from being away from him. Axel Northwood was my everything.

“Please say something,” his voice shook, raw emotions pouring through it as he waited for a response. “Please tell me that I am not the only one willing to try.”

“Axel...” I whispered, tears pouring down my face. “How can we make it possible? We are forbidden for each other. We should never have started this in the first place.”

“We were destined for each other. It wasn’t our choice to make. Even if it was, I would choose you over and over again because you are the best thing that had ever happened to me. I don’t regret ever being mated to you. Violet, I live and breathe for you.”

“I don’t know how to live without you either,” I cried. “I cannot live without you.”

“Is that a yes to trying?” he asked me, and I nodded my head.

“It still feels very wrong, but...”

He cut me off with a kiss, gliding his tongue against mine, licking my lips hungrily. Tingles rippled through me as I felt my body coming alive. I had been dead inside for the past few months from being away from him.

“Thank you!” He beamed as he pulled away from the kiss. “Thank you so very much, baby.”

“Your father...”

“Don’t worry about him. He cannot stop us anymore. I will not let him,” he interrupted.

He reached for my cheek and caressed it gently. “I love you so much, baby.”

I opened my mouth to say it back, only for me to close it again.

“You don’t have to say it back now. No rush,” he said with an understanding smile.

No doubt, I was madly in love with him. But I still had my fears. I feared that I would start to resent him in the long run. I feared that whenever I saw his father, all I would see was my father’s murderer. What if his father hated me as much as he hated my dad? What if—

The sound of the door opening interrupted my thoughts, and I turned to see Mother walking into the room.

“Finally. The both of you can be together again,” she said with a wide smile.

She had been so concerned about me and had repeatedly suggested that I forgive Axel so that I could be fine again. But I had been vehemently protesting. She must have ignored my objection to seeing him and invited him over when I fell unconscious again and seemed like I was going to die.

“Thank you for allowing me see her,” Axel nodded at her.

“I would do anything to keep my daughter alive.” She stood beside me and gave my shoulder a little squeeze. “How do you feel, darling?”

I nodded slightly. “Much better.”

Axel’s phone rang, and I turned my attention to him.

“Indie,” he muttered before picking the call.

I used my Onyx’s ears to listen in on the conversation.

“You better get your ass back to the pack before they take your little cousin away. She leaves in a few hours,” Indie said from the other end of the line.

He jerked to his feet, alert. “What? To where? What’s happening?”

“She found her mate yesterday. He’s an Alpha in the west.” She paused, then continued, concern filling her voice. “By the way, how is Violet?”

“She’s fine. I’ll be on my way now,” he said and ended the call.

His attention flickered back to me. “I am sorry, baby. But I have to go. I will be back soon. Please do not push me away.”

If Daisy was leaving to the west, I might not get to see her again in a very long time. And she was my roommate and my best friend. I needed to apologize to her for avoiding her and also give her a very big hug.

Before I could stop myself, I blurted, “I would follow you. If the Northern King would accept me, that is.”
