Chapter 272 152| Regrets and Grief.
VIOLET
“No!” I screamed as I watched the sword pierce through my father’s skin. Tears rolled down my eyes as I dropped to the floor.
He darted his gaze at me, his mouth opening to say something, but he was fast losing consciousness. Despite the pain ripping through me, I collected myself and ran to him, holding his head on my laps.
Pain and fear tore through my entire being. I didn’t want to lose him. He might not be the best father, but he was still my father. The wound was severe, and he could only survive it by a miracle.
“Please help. I beg you!” I flicked my gaze at Lila. “I beg you, please. Use your magic.”
“My dear Violet,” my father called, coughing out blood.
“Hang on. Save your strength. We will find help,” I quickly told him.
“No.” He held my hand. “I cannot be saved.”
I shook my head vehemently in denial, hot tears streaming down my face. “You are not going to die.”
“Violet,” he called with a strangled voice, “I know you may think I don’t love you. But I do. I have since the very first time I laid my eyes on you. And I apologize that I have done nothing to prove that to you. I have wronged you in so many ways, and I am truly sorry. I am not asking you to forgive me because I know that may be impossible. I just want you to know how much I regret my actions.”
“I forgive you,” I blurted without thinking twice, “please just stay with me.”
He looked at my mother, who was standing in one corner, sadness in her eyes. “Please tell your mother how sorry I am and how much I regret ever treating her the way I did. She deserved better.”
He gasped sharply, then returned his gaze to me. “The kingdom is now in your hands, my pretty princess. Rule like a queen that you are.” He let out another screeching gasp, and my heart twisted violently when he was quickly losing consciousness. The last words he said came out as a whisper, “I... I... love...”
He trailed off, and his body went limp, his eyes closing permanently.
“No. No. No.” I shook him violently, hoping he would wake up. I had felt my tether to him snap, but I was in denial. I didn’t want to accept that my father had died. I couldn’t accept that truth. It was too much for me to bear.
“Wake up, please!” I cried uncontrollably as I continued shaking him. But he wasn’t responding, and that was when grief hit me with full force.
“No!” I growled so loudly that the ground around us shook. “No!”
“Violet.” Axel wrapped his arm around my shoulders, attempting to help me up.
“Leave me alone!” I growled as I leapt to my feet and pushed him away.
“Violet...” he whispered. “I am sorr—”
“Do not pretend to care!” I cut him off with a growl. “I begged you. I begged you to stop your father. But you refused and even stopped me from helping him. Leave me alone. I hate you!” I began to hit his chest violently, unfathomable pain searing through me. “I hate you so much. I hate you.”
He just stood there and received the hits without fighting back or trying to stop me.
“Violet.” My mother suddenly grabbed my arms and pulled me towards her. “Stop. Stop it.”
I tried to release myself from her grip so that I could continue hitting Axel for betraying me like that. He was my mate and was supposed to help me, but he didn’t.
“You wanted this. Admit it. You wanted my father dead, and that is why you didn’t stop your father. I hate you so much!” I screamed, tears pouring down my face.
“Violet, stop!” my mother yelled, pain evident in her voice.
I finally turned my attention to her. “Mom.” My voice broke. “He is gone. He is really dead. He is not coming back.”
Tears streamed down her face as she stared at me. Then she wrapped her arms around me in a tight hug.
“He said he was sorry for how he treated you and he regretted his actions.” I buried my head in her chest, crying.
“I heard, baby. I heard everything,” she cried.
I suddenly felt a hand on my shoulder, squeezing it gently.
“Get your hand off me!” I yelled and yanked his hand off. “Leave me alone. Don’t ever come close to me again. Ever.”
“Violet, you know there is nothing I could’ve done. I am sorry. I am—”
“Of course there is something you could’ve done. All you had to do was stop him, but you couldn’t do that. You knew how much losing my father was going to hurt me, but you didn’t care. You don’t care about me. You only pretend to. What’s even the use of being mates? I don’t want to be mated to you anymore.” I wasn’t thinking clearly as I rambled.
“Violet, please don’t say that,” he whispered, hurt flashing through his eyes.
“I, Violet Southerton...” I began to say, but…
“Do not say what you would regret, child,” I suddenly heard Lila say, and the next thing I knew, she cast a spell that knocked me out.
