Chapter 260 140| Prom.

VIOLET

“You look really beautiful,” Daisy said as we both stared at my reflection in the mirror.

I was wearing a soft light blue dress. The satin hugged my bodice in smooth, seamless lines, the sweetheart neckline framed with delicate beadwork. The waist cinched gently before the skirt flared into layers of airy chiffon. My hair framed my face in loose waves. I had a small amount of makeup applied to my face.

I looked stunning.

Today was my prom, and I had been anticipating this because it finally felt like a breath of fresh air. The days leading to this had been so hectic with us tracking and following Zara. We even almost got into trouble at the witches' land when the clan leader suddenly showed up and sensed intruders. Thankfully, Daisy quickly teleported us back to the academy before we got caught.

Despite the stress and risk we encountered tracking Zara, we had found nothing implicating so far.

“Are you not done yet? I am dying to see you,” Axel’s voice came through the mind link.

He was waiting for me outside. He had been impatiently waiting for me to finish for several minutes now.

I chuckled softly. “I am done.”

“Coming in now,” he said, and the door opened almost immediately.

The moment he stepped in and landed his eyes on me, he froze. His mouth opened wide as he continued staring at me.

After a few moments, he finally spoke. “Am I in heaven right now?”

“What?” I let out a small laugh.

“Because I am seeing an angel right now,” he continued.

“Oh, please.” I rolled my eyes and chuckled. Then I allowed myself to fully take in his outfit.

He wore a deep midnight blue suit — the kind that looked almost black until the light caught it and revealed its richness. The jacket was tailored to perfection, with a single-button closure that gave him a sharp look. A crisp white dress shirt sat beneath, its collar framing a slim black silk tie that matched the polished leather shoes on his feet. He looked really handsome in it, as always.

We had chosen the colour theme. Deep blue for him and light blue for me. But we never saw our outfits until today.

“I am not kidding, baby. You look like an angel.” He ventured further into the room and stopped in front of me. He wrapped his arm around my waist and pulled me even closer.

Looking into my eyes, he continued, “You are the most gorgeous woman alive, baby. I love you.”

“You also look magnificent,” I returned his compliment, a blush creeping up my cheeks.

He always had a way of making me feel good. I loved this man so very much, and I never wanted to be away from him.

Inside the ballroom was a dream. The ceiling soared high above us, draped with strings of warm fairy lights that fell like constellations. Crystal chandeliers threw light over the polished floor, and at the far end, a live band played a soft, jazzy rendition of a pop song.

Everyone looked really beautiful and happy to be here.

The moment we stepped in, everyone turned their attention to us, their phones out to capture our entrance. We were kind of a big deal here. Aside from the fact that Axel was the most powerful Alpha, we were both heirs to our kingdoms’ thrones. And the fact that we were both forbidden for each other made our mate bond even more fascinating to them.

Whispers travelled around the hall as we entered, and I was getting really anxious.

Axel tightened his grip around my waist. “It’s okay, baby. Just breathe. Okay?”

I nodded. “Okay.”

Indie suddenly approached us, with Mason as her date. She wore a simple beige dress, while Mason wore a brown tuxedo.

These two were really close with each other.

“Here comes the king and queen!” she beamed as she hugged me.

“Oh, please. We don’t know that.” I chuckled.

“Even if you aren’t awarded the king and queen tonight, you are the king and queen of your kingdom, and the title here is nothing compared to that. And that’s on period!” she beamed.

Laughter escaped me. “Oh, please.”

She finally settled her gaze on Axel. “Hello, brother. Bye, brother,” she said.

Axel shook his head and chuckled. “Sometimes I wonder if you are mentally okay.”

“Short answer, I am not,” she chuckled before dragging Mason away along with her.

“Hi. Bye,” Mason, who had been quiet all along, finally said as he followed her.

Axel scoffed. “She has really infected him with her craziness.”

“I love her!” I chuckled.

“I know, right,” he said, smiling from ear to ear.

Everyone’s attention suddenly turned towards the door, and I spun around to see who had just entered. My eyes met with Emmett’s, and I took a deep breath.

He stood at the entrance with his hand hooked around his twin sister’s — Emily. I had tried my best to avoid both of them ever since we resumed, and thankfully, they didn’t seem to be interested in bothering me either.

Emily had changed drastically. She wasn’t the obnoxious bitch I knew her to be anymore. She now seemed calmer and even depressed. I wondered if it was her parents’ death that had changed her this much.

They ventured further into the hall, and when I noticed that they were walking towards us, I quickly looked at Axel. “Let’s go.”

I didn’t want to engage in any form of conversation with them.

“Violet,” Emmett called just as we began walking.

I pretended not to hear and we continued walking.

But he called my name again. “Violet. Please wait.”

Exhaling sharply, I turned around to look at him. “Hey.”

“Hi,” he said nervously as he came to a stop before us.

“What do you want?” Axel groaned. “What part of ‘stay away from my mate don’t you understand?”

He started inching closer to Emmett, but I grabbed his arm, pulling him back.

“Axel, please,” I said, looking into his eyes.

I didn’t want them to cause a scene here.

“I am not trying to take her away from you. I just wanted to...”

He flicked his gaze at me and continued. “I just wanted to tell you how beautiful you look tonight.”

Axel let out a low growl and tried to inch closer, but I pulled him back again. Axel can be so temperamental and protective when it comes to me.

I nodded at Emmett. “Thank you.”

“And I am not saying this because I want you to be mine. I still care about you, but I have accepted that you can never be mine...”

“It’s a good thing you know that!” Axel interrupted.

Emmett nodded and pressed his lips together, his gaze fixed on me. “I also want to sincerely apologize for betraying our friendship. I was so selfish that I didn’t think of how that would hurt you. I am sorry, Violet. And I hope you find a place in your heart to forgive me.”

“No. She won’t!” Axel groaned.

As much as I felt really hurt and betrayed by what he did to me, there was no reason to hold grudges against him anymore. He had seen and acknowledged his mistakes.

Sighing, I muttered, “I forgive you, Emmett. But that doesn’t mean we can go back to being friends.”

A small smile tugged on his lips. “That’s all I needed. I never expected you to want to retain our friendship. That would be asking for too much. Thank you for forgiving me.”

I was glad he knew that.

I nodded. “You are welcome. Please excuse us then.”

With that, Axel and I turned around and continued walking. I didn’t miss the death glare Axel had given him.

“If beheading the Eastern King wouldn’t spark war, I would’ve done just that,” Axel groaned.

I chuckled and gently stroked his back with my fingers to soothe his anger. “I bet you would have.”

I suddenly felt the need to use the restroom and I flicked my gaze at him. “Excuse me for a minute, please.”

His brows furrowed. “Where are you going?”

“I need to use the restroom.”

“I’ll follow you,” he quickly said, and I shot him a glare.

“I am not a baby. You don’t have to follow me everywhere. I’ll be right back.” I stepped on my tiptoes and gave him a quick kiss on the cheek.

I didn’t even wait for him to protest before quickly walking away from him and towards the corridor that led to the restroom.

As I approached the restroom, I suddenly heard something that made me stop in my tracks. “Help!”

I wondered if I had heard wrong when she screamed again. “Help!”

Without further hesitation, I hurried in that direction, my heart beating really fast against my chest.

Bursting the restroom door open, I froze in place when I saw what was before me.

Zara stood there, with a girl in a purple dress lying unconscious on the floor.

Shock consumed her face when she saw me, but she quickly replaced it with a worried look.

“It’s a good thing that you are here. I found her unconscious. We need to rush her to the hospital,” she said and sighed.

“It is really you...” My voice came out as a whisper as I stared at her in shock.
