Chapter 176 Getting Involved Together
The anguished wailing stunned everyone in the room.
Especially Bobby.
Although he had followed Amelia's instructions and told Scarlett that "Mr. Lewis's condition isn't very good," why did Scarlett immediately assume Anthony was dead the moment she arrived?
Unless she knew she had poisoned him.
And this poison would definitely kill Anthony.
Bobby's eyes darkened, a cold, sharp light flashing in them.
Whatever grudge existed between Scarlett and Amelia was none of his business.
But this was the Sullivan family's territory.
If something happened to Anthony on the Sullivan family's turf, he couldn't escape responsibility.
And Amelia was someone he had invited.
What Scarlett did would not only harm Amelia but also harm him and the Sullivan family.
When it came to matters affecting his own interests, how could Bobby not be angry?
If it weren't for Scarlett's status, he would want to strangle her right now!
Steven, beside him, instinctively moved to go explain, but Bobby grabbed him.
Steven looked at him questioningly, and Bobby just mouthed for him to shut up.
He had figured it out—Amelia had guessed the poisoner was most likely Scarlett, which was why she had him tell Scarlett that "Mr. Lewis's condition isn't very good."
Since Amelia had anticipated this, she must have a backup plan.
Originally, if this matter didn't involve him, he could have chosen not to pursue it.
Not offending anyone, not taking sides.
But now it was different.
Scarlett was about to drag him into this mess, too.
So, he'd just let Amelia do her thing.
After Bobby stopped Steven from interfering, he looked toward Amelia.
Her expression was extremely calm, so composed that it sent chills down one's spine.
She just watched Scarlett cry hysterically.
As if waiting for something.
Over there, Scarlett cried until she couldn't breathe. When her emotions finally stabilized a bit, her eyes turned cold as she glared at Amelia.
"You bitch! You killed my grandfather! You'll pay for this! Someone come!"
At her command, two police officers and two of Scarlett's subordinates entered from outside.
The two subordinates wore military uniforms, their eyes sharp and fierce.
Yet Amelia remained calm.
"I killed Mr. Lewis? Ms. Lewis, you need evidence when you speak. Falsely accusing someone without proof—I could sue you for slander."
Scarlett snorted coldly and said, "Before you came, my grandfather's condition was stable. But right after you arrived, he died. If it wasn't you, then who? Come, arrest her."
The four people immediately walked toward Amelia.
Amelia asked in surprise.
"Ms. Lewis, what nonsense are you talking about? Who told you Mr. Lewis is dead? Cursing him like this—aren't you afraid he'll be angry with you when he wakes up?"
The four people stopped in their tracks, their eyes full of confusion.
Anthony wasn't dead?
Scarlett's brow slowly furrowed.
Amelia was too composed, so composed it made people panic.
And the Sullivan family's reaction was also strange.
They seemed to be waiting to watch the drama unfold.
Unease slowly grew in Scarlett's heart.
She couldn't help but look toward Anthony.
He still had his eyes closed, his face pale without any color, impossible to tell if he was dead or alive.
She glanced at her subordinate, who immediately understood and stepped forward to Anthony's bedside, reaching out to check his breathing.
Though very faint, there was breath, and it was steady.
"Ms. Lewis..." The person's face lit up with joy as he told Scarlett, "Mr. Lewis isn't dead!"
Scarlett's facial muscles twitched.
She didn't believe it and came to Anthony's bedside to check his breathing herself.
But just as her hand reached out, Anthony suddenly opened his eyes, his gaze meeting Scarlett's directly.
Scarlett was so frightened she trembled all over, screaming, her body stumbling backward several steps before she steadied herself.
And Anthony's eyes continued to stare at her intently.
Scarlett was both shocked and scared, her mind in complete chaos.
She thought, 'Impossible, how could grandfather not be dead?'
She had clearly used mercury compounds, mixed into the medicine Amelia had prepared for Anthony.
She had personally fed him the medicine and watched him drink it with her own eyes.
But how...
How could Anthony be completely fine?
Not only that, his eyes seemed even brighter than when he was conscious the past few days.
Amelia stepped forward at this moment.
She smiled sweetly, but her words carried weight.
"Ms. Lewis, Mr. Lewis has woken up. Why aren't you happy? Instead, you seem shocked? As if... You thought Mr. Lewis would definitely die?"
Scarlett suddenly snapped back to reality.
She glared fiercely at Amelia.
"What are you talking about! Of course, I'm happy grandfather woke up! Shut up!"
Amelia stopped talking, but her face still wore a smile.
Seeing her smile so brightly made Scarlett very uncomfortable.
But the urgent matter now was Anthony.
She needed to figure out what was going on.
After giving Amelia a warning glare, she quickly returned to Anthony's bedside.
"Grandfather, you..."
Before she could finish, Anthony raised his hand and slapped her.
The slap wasn't hard—Anthony was still recovering and had little strength—but his eyes were full of anger.
Scarlett was stunned.
"Grandfather, you hit me?"
"You know very well in your heart why I hit you!"
Scarlett was even more confused.
When she poisoned him, Anthony couldn't have seen it. He was in a deep sleep. She had lifted his chin and fed him the medicine bit by bit.
Because feeding the medicine was difficult, it took her nearly twenty minutes to finish one bowl.
But Anthony said she knew very well?
What exactly did Anthony know?
Scarlett's whole body trembled slightly.
Amelia stepped forward again.
"Mr. Lewis, I'm the doctor who's been treating you these past few days. Your body hasn't fully recovered yet, so don't get angry. At least tell us why you're angry?"
Scarlett glared fiercely at Amelia for being nosy.
But Amelia didn't look at her at all, only staring at Anthony.
Anthony was also looking at her.
His eyes held no gratitude, only scrutiny.
After a moment, he said, "I'm just angry that she was rude, yelling at you, the doctor. Nothing else."
Then he added, "Thank you for saving me."
Amelia understood—Anthony wasn't going to reveal the truth.
He knew everything.
Because over these three days, Amelia's medicine not only stabilized his condition but also allowed him to retain some hearing while unconscious.
Scarlett wasn't without care for her grandfather in her heart; she just cared more about herself.
So after poisoning him, she would surely say some words of repentance.
Just like when Amelia saw Scarlett in the dessert shop with her hands clasped together, confessing to God.
And even if she hadn't said words of repentance, it didn't matter—after Amelia arrived, she had been guiding Anthony to understand the truth.
Anyone who makes it to the rank of general isn't an idiot.
He must understand that the person who poisoned him was Scarlett.
But he still chose to protect her.
No wonder.
Anthony raised Scarlett. Even knowing she poisoned him and wanted him dead, he still chose to protect her.
Amelia was surprised, but not too surprised.
She said calmly, "No need to thank me. I came to treat you for Mr. Sullivan's sake. However, something small happened during treatment that I must tell you about."
"Go ahead."
"Your body was poisoned today with mercury compounds. If I hadn't arrived in time, you would already be... But don't worry, all the poison in your body has been expelled. You'll cough up blood these next few days, but it's nothing serious—it's the toxins being expelled."
Anthony nodded and thanked her again, "Thank you."
Amelia glanced at Bobby.
Bobby stepped forward at this moment.
"Mr. Lewis, I'm Bobby. I've already investigated the poisoning. I've questioned everyone who's been in contact with you these past few days, and none of them was the poisoner. If you need, I'm willing to cooperate with the police and let them investigate."
Scarlett's hands in her sleeves trembled violently.
Anthony saw it.
He quickly looked away and waved his hand, "No need."
Bobby looked shocked, "Someone poisoned you, and you're not going to investigate?"
"Too many people want me dead. If I really investigated, there'd be no end to it... Don't worry, I trust you. This has nothing to do with you. I just want to recover now, not worry about these things."
In short, Anthony vaguely brushed the matter aside.
Bobby understood.
Anthony had also guessed who the poisoner was, but he didn't want to pursue it.
Since Anthony wasn't pursuing it, Bobby couldn't keep insisting.
Anthony already knew this had nothing to do with him.
Although Bobby still felt somewhat annoyed, he didn't say anything more.
Just a bit regretful.
Something that almost became a major incident was just brushed aside so lightly.
Although Amelia was clever, she was still just a woman.
Women are soft-hearted.
This was a common weakness among women.
Whatever, the matter was resolved. Anthony wasn't dead and knew this had nothing to do with him, Bobby. He had nothing to complain about.
However, just then, shouts came from downstairs.
"Is Ms. Lewis here? I'm looking for Ms. Lewis!"
Scarlett's mind was in chaos, and hearing the shouting made her even more irritable.
"Who's making all that noise outside! Throw him out!"
But Amelia spoke up, "The person downstairs is calling your name. There must be something important. Why not let him come up and ask what it is?"
After saying this, she looked at Bobby.
Bobby now favored Amelia's side over Scarlett's.
After all, one wanted to implicate him, while the other had saved him.
He immediately ordered Steven, "Who's shouting? Bring him up!"
"Yes, Dad."
Steven responded and went downstairs.
Maeve just quietly watched all of this.
As for Scarlett, waves of panic rose in her heart.
But she quickly told herself that even if her grandfather had guessed, he hadn't mentioned it in front of outsiders. At most, she'd get scolded—nothing would happen to her.
She hypnotized herself this way, and her mindset gradually calmed down.
Just then, Steven brought the person from downstairs up.
