Chapter 175 Poisoning
Scarlett muttered to herself, and a car pulled up.
She got in and left.
Only then did Amelia step out, removing the mask from her face, and enter the Sullivan Mansion.
Bobby was already waiting in the living room, and Steven was there too.
What surprised Amelia was that Maeve was present as well.
She didn't speak to Amelia; she just followed her upstairs.
Amelia could tell she had something to say, but with so many people around, it wasn't convenient for her to speak up.
Amelia acted as if she hadn't noticed, like she didn't notice, and calmly walked upstairs.
She arrived at Anthony's room. He was still unconscious.
But there was actually a cloudy teardrop at the corner of his eye.
It quickly rolled onto the pillow and disappeared without a trace.
The others didn't notice, but Amelia saw it.
She sat down in the chair by the bed, and while treating Anthony, she asked Bobby about Anthony's condition over the past three days.
"I've been having someone give Anthony the medicine from your prescription on time. But..."
Bobby hesitated.
Amelia raised her eyelids slightly and said, "But what? Just say it directly, there are no outsiders here."
Only then did Bobby continue: "But Anthony hasn't shown any signs of improvement at all... Is the dosage of this medicine too small?"
Amelia looked at Bobby.
Bobby thought she was angry.
She had done the Sullivan family a favor, and Roman's health still depended on her treatment.
He was about to explain that he didn't mean anything by it when Amelia spoke first.
"No improvement, but no deterioration either, right?"
Bobby was stumped.
Amelia continued: "Before Anthony was brought here, wasn't his condition getting worse day by day?"
Bobby was startled for a moment.
"That's true..."
"Then the medicine is still somewhat effective."
Not getting better, but not getting worse either.
Bobby had been too worried and overlooked this point.
The Lewis and Sullivan families had been friends since Anthony's generation.
Although one family was in politics and the other in business, they had plenty of mutual interests.
So Bobby cared about Anthony like he would his own father.
"I shouldn't have said that; it's my fault," Bobby said.
Amelia said, "It's not your fault. Care leads to confusion."
As she spoke, she continued examining Anthony.
A moment later, she suddenly looked very surprised.
"How could this be?"
Bobby quickly stepped forward and asked, "What's wrong?"
Amelia's eyes were ice-cold.
"Given the meds I prescribed, Anthony's vitals should've been a lot more stable by now. But his heart sounds are irregular, circulation's sluggish, and there's a strange toxicity building up in his system..."
Bobby frowned. "Circulation? Toxicity? What are you saying?"
Amelia slid the stethoscope from her ears, her voice flat. "I'm saying—he's been poisoned."
Bobby was shocked, his eyes nearly popping out.
Maeve was also surprised, but said nothing, just stood quietly.
Only Steven, the brainless one, immediately said, "Impossible!"
Everyone looked over.
Steven said with a dark expression, "Ever since Anthony moved in, my dad has been personally taking care of him, barely leaving his side. Are you saying he was suddenly poisoned by someone—are you trying to say my dad poisoned him?"
Bobby hadn't thought of that angle yet.
Hearing his son put it that way, he realized it, and his expression soured a bit.
"Ms. Richardson, did you make a mistake in your diagnosis?"
"I didn't make a mistake, and I'm also not saying that you people did the poisoning."
Bobby's expression improved a little.
Amelia continued, "Steven just said you're always watching over Anthony, which means there are also times when you leave."
Steven interjected, "Obviously! My dad has to eat, use the bathroom, and sleep."
Steven had his eye on Amelia, but Amelia had been ignoring him all along, which made him angry at her.
He had pent-up anger, and now he let it all out.
"Shut up!" Bobby scolded him. "It's not your turn to speak! Maeve, take him out."
"Yes, Dad." Maeve dragged Steven out.
Only then did Amelia continue: "Anthony's heartbeat is very irregular, but clearly he was poisoned not long ago. In the past hour, besides yourself, who else has entered this room?"
Bobby hesitated.
Amelia said, "If you want to clear yourself of suspicion, you'd better explain clearly. You know what my medical skills are like, so you should understand that I won't make a mistake in diagnosis."
Bobby gritted his teeth and spoke: "In the past hour, besides me, there was a caregiver. But this caregiver has been with my dad for years, is very honest, and when she was here, I was also present. She had no opportunity to do anything. However..."
"However, what?"
"Scarlett also came."
"When?"
"Ten minutes before you arrived, and she was here the whole time. And during this hour, I was in the living room waiting for you, but I didn't come upstairs."
"So only she had the opportunity?"
Bobby was silent for a while, then said, "That's right. But Anthony is her own grandfather; she couldn't possibly do this. She has no motive."
Amelia looked puzzled.
"That's strange then. If it wasn't her, then it could only be that caregiver."
"I'll go question her!"
"No rush, detoxification comes first."
"You can detoxify him?"
"Of course. The poison Anthony was given is a mercury compound. This poison isn't hard to cure."
As Amelia spoke, she had already opened the medical kit she brought.
It had everything needed.
Amelia first fed Anthony a pill.
That pill was the antidote she brought from the Shadow Operations Division.
Then she began treating him.
Anthony's condition was severe, with multiple illnesses—this was why other doctors didn't dare take the case. One wrong move and he'd die even faster.
Since Amelia had taken it on, she had the confidence.
These past two days, besides handling her own business, whenever she had free time, she'd been researching how to treat Anthony's illness.
She had already found an acupuncture technique that was very suitable for Anthony.
Amelia laid out the silver needles, sterilized them one by one, and began treating Anthony.
It took a full half hour. Beads of sweat the size of beans appeared on Amelia's forehead before she finally breathed a sigh of relief and said, "It's done."
Bobby was dumbfounded. "That's it, he's cured?"
Amelia glanced at him.
"How could it be that simple? Today was just the first treatment. There are three courses in total, each lasting seven days. It'll take twenty-one days total for complete recovery. After recovery, his legs probably won't be able to walk, but his life can be saved."
Bobby let out a long breath.
Being able to save his life was good enough.
"Anthony should wake up soon. You can go question that caregiver now."
Only then did Bobby remember this matter.
He'd been so nervous while Amelia was treating Anthony that he'd forgotten about it.
"I'll go right away!"
Amelia reminded him, "Mr. Lewis being poisoned is no small matter. You should call Ms. Lewis over, too."
Bobby asked in surprise, "But didn't you want to see her?"
Amelia laughed and said, "She told you that?"
"Yes."
"What else did she say?"
Bobby hesitated, but still spoke.
"She said that you both pursued Finn back then, Finn ultimately chose her, so you hold a grudge..."
Amelia looked like she'd heard a joke.
"Is that really what she told you?"
"Yes..."
Amelia said, "Finn and I were publicly a couple. She was the one who came between Finn and me. If you don't believe me, just go ask Finn yourself. But I've already let it go. I don't want to see her simply because seeing this side chick makes me sick."
Bobby had felt something was off at the time, because although he didn't interact much with Amelia, he knew her character somewhat.
She wasn't the type to hold a grudge just because she lost to someone else.
And if it was really just as Scarlett said, why would Scarlett's eyes show such hatred when mentioning Amelia?
Shouldn't the one feeling hatred be Amelia, who lost?
So that was the truth...
"But now it's different. If we don't get to the bottom of the poisoning, I can't clear myself either. Call her over, but use a different approach. Just say Anthony's condition isn't good, and she needs to come right away, so she won't be too scared to come see me out of guilt."
Bobby agreed with a complicated expression.
But deep down, he was beginning to suspect that perhaps the poisoner wasn't the caregiver—perhaps it really was Scarlett.
Women easily do impulsive things over emotional matters.
He quickly went out and called Scarlett himself. As for the caregiver, he had Steven go "question" her.
His son, though occasionally muddle-headed, was more ruthless than he.
Interrogating people was right up his alley.
Meanwhile, Maeve came into the room.
She got straight to the point with Amelia: "The people I sent to Isaac's hometown have returned."
Amelia understood.
No wonder Maeve showed up here today.
She glanced at Anthony on the bed and said, "Let's talk about this later."
Maeve frowned. "Why? It's just the two of us in the room."
Amelia said, "Isn't Anthony a person?"
Maeve was stumped. "I didn't mean that, it's just he can't hear..."
"The patient just finished treatment and needs rest. We'll talk after this is over."
Maeve had no choice but to say, "Then after this is over, let's have a meal together."
Amelia smiled slightly. "Okay."
Maeve didn't like Amelia's smile.
When she smiled, it was like she had everything under control, which made people very uneasy.
But strangely, she didn't seem to dislike her smile either particularly.
Her feelings were complicated, but she said nothing more and just waited quietly.
Soon, Steven and Bobby returned.
"That caregiver didn't do anything wrong." Steven's tone was very certain.
Amelia didn't ask about the interrogation process, just nodded.
She looked at Bobby again.
"Scarlett will be here soon."
As soon as the words fell, urgent footsteps could be heard outside.
The next second, the door was pushed open forcefully.
Scarlett's figure swept in like a gust of wind, accompanied by crying.
"Grandpa... Grandpa, how could you leave me!"
