Chapter 177 You Are Not Her Match
The person downstairs shouting Scarlett's name was Charles.
But when he walked in, he didn't even glance at Amelia, as if he didn't know her at all.
And no one in the room knew they were acquainted.
When Scarlett saw Charles come in, her eyelid twitched hard.
What was this man doing here?!
Before she could say anything to get rid of him, Charles had already spoken—
"Ms. Lewis, you were in such a hurry to buy mercury compounds this morning that you left something behind. My employee said it was very valuable, so I rushed to bring it to you."
As he spoke, he opened his palm.
In his palm, a diamond bracelet was shining brilliantly.
Scarlett's face changed dramatically.
Amelia suddenly spoke up: "What did you say she bought? Mercury compounds?"
Maeve, who had been silent, showed a surprised expression and followed Amelia's lead: "Ms. Richardson, didn't you just say that Mr. Lewis was poisoned with mercury compounds?"
Amelia nodded and asked Scarlett, "Ms. Lewis, why did you buy mercury compounds?"
Scarlett was completely flustered and instinctively denied it: "I didn't buy any mercury compounds! And I don't know this person! Get him out of here!"
Charles looked bewildered.
"How can you not know me? We just met this morning. You said you had rats at home and wanted to buy mercury compounds. I even advised you that rats won't eat mercury compounds, and you'd be better off buying special rat poison. You wouldn't listen and insisted on mercury compounds, so I had to sell them to you."
As he spoke, he pulled out his phone.
"Here's the payment record. You overpaid me at the time, and I thought about it later—I can't overcharge people—so I was planning to return the extra money to you now."
The phone showed the payer was Scarlett.
Scarlett couldn't defend herself.
Amelia's expression was serious.
"Ms. Lewis, you bought mercury compounds, and Mr. Lewis happens to be poisoned with mercury compounds. How do you explain this?"
"I... I..."
Scarlett's eyes were red, but they held a vicious look.
Anthony didn't blame her, so why was Amelia interfering?
Everyone in the room was looking at her.
Scarlett panicked and could only turn to Anthony for help.
"Grandpa, I really didn't buy mercury compounds. I don't know why this person is saying this. I've never even seen him."
Charles looked even more confused.
"What's going on? Ms. Lewis, why are you pretending not to know me?"
"Enough!" Anthony spoke sternly.
Because of his sudden loud voice, he started coughing violently.
"Grandpa..."
Scarlett tried to soothe his chest, but Anthony pushed her away.
He steadied his breathing and said in a low voice, "This is our family matter. Bobby, please show this gentleman out."
"Yes..." Bobby nodded and calmly escorted Charles out.
But Bobby's mind was reeling.
He had misjudged the situation.
He had thought Amelia wasn't ruthless enough, but she had a backup plan all along.
He didn't believe for a second that a pharmacy owner would come to someone's door to return money.
"Everyone else, leave. Lettie stays. I need to talk to her alone."
Anthony's face looked terrible—he was angry.
However, the two police officers Scarlett had brought spoke up.
"Mr. Lewis, this Ms. Lewis filed a report saying someone poisoned you. Now we have new evidence, so Ms. Lewis needs to come with us!"
Scarlett's eyes widened.
"You're taking me away? I'm the one who called the police!"
"You called the police, so of course, we need to investigate thoroughly. Right now, we suspect the poisoning is related to you, so please come with us!"
"Grandpa..."
Scarlett grabbed Anthony's hand desperately.
Anthony's face looked even worse.
He spoke, having two of his men negotiate with the police officers.
He kept Amelia behind to talk privately.
"Miss, can we chat for a moment?"
Amelia didn't refuse. She smiled and said, "Sure."
"Grandpa, I..."
Scarlett wanted to stay too.
She was afraid that once she left this room, she'd be taken away by the police.
She didn't want to become a murderer!
"You leave! I want to talk to this lady alone."
Scarlett had no choice but to leave.
Soon, only Amelia and Anthony remained in the room.
"Miss..."
Amelia interrupted him: "You don't need to call me that. I think you know who I am."
Anthony paused.
He did know.
When Scarlett had insisted on being with Finn, he'd already done some digging on Amelia.
She had no job or income—yet somehow she could afford to live in a luxury villa in Thornfield.
Before, he thought she made money by selling her looks, but now he knows it's her medical skills.
She could make him hear conversations while unconscious—this level of medical skill needed no further proof.
And Amelia guessed that Anthony had investigated her because, after she cured him, his eyes showed little gratitude, only surprise.
As if surprised that she was the one who cured him.
Anthony said, "Ms. Richardson, you arranged all this, didn't you?"
Amelia smiled more deeply.
"Mr. Lewis, that's not quite right. Without Ms. Lewis's 'help,' I couldn't have arranged any of this."
"How dare you!"
Amelia shot back: "Compared to Ms. Lewis, I'm not that bold. No matter what, I'd never dare poison my own grandfather."
Anthony's expression darkened further.
This was the first time a young woman had left him speechless.
He took a deep breath and decided not to argue with her.
"What do you want? Finn? He can't divorce and remarry you."
Amelia laughed.
"Ms. Lewis is truly your granddaughter—her head is full of romance too, with no room for anything else."
"You!"
Anthony was so angry that he started coughing.
Amelia thoughtfully handed him a glass of water.
"You're still recovering. Don't get too emotional—it's bad for your health."
Anthony grew even angrier.
Gritting his teeth, he asked: "What exactly do you want?"
Amelia pulled up a chair and sat down: "I know the Lewis family has always been neutral..."
Anthony's eyes shot up, not angry but surprised.
She was bringing this up.
No wonder she said that thing about romance...
Amelia continued: "I don't want to make things difficult for you or force you to side with Micah. I just hope that in the near future, you can remain neutral and not favor the other side. Otherwise, Ms. Lewis's situation won't be easy to resolve."
Anthony looked at her deeply.
This look was different from his previous disdain and disgust.
It held more wariness.
"You're with Micah?"
Amelia shook her head: "Unfortunately, I'm not with Micah. He doesn't even know me."
"Then why are you favoring Micah?"
"We ordinary citizens care about politics sometimes, too. Between him and the other candidate, as a citizen, I prefer Micah."
Anthony stared at her intently, unable to tell which of her words were true and which were false.
After a long while, Anthony withdrew his probing gaze, his expression cold.
"You dare threaten me—aren't you afraid I'll kill you?"
Amelia smiled slightly.
"Since I dare make this deal with you, I naturally have a backup plan. Of course, if you're confident enough, you can have someone kill me right now and see whether I'm more capable or you are."
Anthony gasped inwardly.
Amelia had figured out his psychology.
Amelia's life wasn't worth much, so he didn't dare gamble with his granddaughter's life.
Besides, Amelia's request really wasn't excessive.
She was only asking him to remain neutral, not to help the Porter family.
It was a good deal.
He just felt very annoyed.
At his age, to be manipulated by a young woman.
Amelia knew what he was thinking and said, "Of course, as an apology, I'll help cure your illness."
Anthony closed his eyes and sighed.
His illness—he'd seen so many doctors, but only Amelia could cure him this quickly.
Now he wasn't even resentful anymore and actually admired her.
"If only you were my granddaughter," Anthony said.
Amelia understood what he meant.
She wrote out two prescriptions and placed them on the nightstand.
"You need three courses of treatment total, but I know you don't want to see me, so you just need to prepare the medicine according to these prescriptions."
Anthony waved his hand.
"Go! Take all your people with you."
"Alright." Amelia nodded slightly, didn't linger, and turned to leave.
Her medical skills weren't actually that miraculous.
For others, Anthony's illness was hard to treat because they couldn't make the antidote.
But Soulrend Powder was a poison she had created, so naturally, she knew how to cure it.
So Bobby wasn't wrong—Anthony's illness really could only be treated by her.
The two officers outside saw Amelia come out and gave her questioning looks.
Amelia nodded slightly, and they headed downstairs.
Seeing this, Scarlett was furious: "They're your people? What have you done!"
Amelia said expressionlessly: "Before you ask me, ask yourself what you've done."
If Scarlett hadn't pulled this stunt, would she have had a chance to turn it against her?
At the end of the day, she should be grateful the Lewis family still had some value in Amelia's eyes. Otherwise, she wouldn't have bothered with this embarrassing charade.
"You—"
Scarlett wanted to argue back, but Anthony's voice came from inside: "Scarlett, get in here!"
Amelia said quietly, "Mr. Lewis is calling you. You'd better go in, Ms. Lewis."
Scarlett was seething but could only turn and enter the room.
Anthony looked at her and said directly, "Kneel down!"
Scarlett didn't dare resist and knelt straight down.
"Do you know why I'm making you kneel?"
Scarlett already knew Anthony understood everything. Unable to defend herself, she could only bite her lip and say: "I know... I did something wrong, but... I thought you couldn't be saved, so I... If I'd known you could be cured, I absolutely wouldn't have dared to do this."
After a long silence, Anthony said, "You're no match for her. Pack your things and go back to Thornfield. Don't ever come to Goldenvale again."
"But..."
"But what? If you want to go to prison, that's up to you."
Scarlett didn't dare say anything more.
