Chapter 174: Her Ex-boyfriend

Chapter 174 Her Ex-boyfriend

"Fine! I guess I was being presumptuous, making this wasted trip for nothing, huh? I'll leave now and won't keep you from your 'important business.'"

As soon as Yosef finished speaking, he got kicked in the butt.

He clutched his rear end in pain.

Just as he was about to complain, he heard Samuel say, "Tell me, who's her ex-boyfriend?"

Yosef asked, confused, "Didn't you say you promised her you wouldn't look into her business?"

Samuel gave him a silent look.

"You're the one who looked into it, and you're the one insisting on telling me. What does that have to do with me?"

Yosef rolled his eyes.

What a sneaky guy.

But he did want to tell Samuel about Amelia's ex-boyfriend.

"You know Mr. Lewis from Thornfield, right?"

"Yeah, he's retired now, but the people he trained are all high-ranking officials in Thornfield."

Yosef nodded and asked, "Do you know his grandson-in-law?"

Samuel thought for a moment and said, "Is his name Finn?"

"Yeah, that's the guy everyone's been talking about in Thornfield lately. Got shipped down to the southern border for a high-risk op—barely made it back alive. Came home with a Medal of Valor, and now he's the deputy chief of the Thornfield Police Department. Fastest promotion we've seen in years, but nobody's complaining. Everyone knows he paid for it in blood."

But then Yosef added, "However, I know that besides risking his life, someone was pulling strings behind the scenes to get him the chance to join the peacekeeping force. His backer is Mr. Lewis. Now he's married to Mr. Lewis's granddaughter."

Samuel's expression remained calm.

Even though he'd already guessed that this Finn was Amelia's ex-boyfriend.

"Samuel, he's..."

"I know." Samuel interrupted him. "I already know who he is. You can go now."

But Yosef had more to say.

"I didn't come here today just to tell you about Amelia's ex-boyfriend's identity."

Samuel looked up.

Only then did Yosef continue, "I dealt with Finn once. That time, he'd had too much to drink. He said he never got over his ex-girlfriend, that he doesn't love his wife, and that everything was forced on him. He said he would definitely get divorced. I didn't know Amelia at the time, so I didn't bother with his business—just thought he was talking nonsense. But who would've thought..."

Samuel's eyes grew serious.

He understood why Yosef was telling him this.

If Finn was telling the truth, then he never actually betrayed Amelia.

If Amelia found out about this, would she soften? Forgive him and get back together with him?

Samuel lit another cigarette.

He wasn't really a smoker, but he liked to light one when his mind was troubled.

The nicotine helped him think clearly.

Yosef sat down beside him.

"I think this guy is going to become an obstacle between you and Amelia. You need to do something."

Samuel exhaled smoke.

"Do what? Kill him?"

Finn's current position wasn't something he could casually mess with.

Besides, he had no intention of killing him.

If Samuel killed him and Amelia found out, the consequences would be unthinkable.

And he didn't stoop to such things.

Yosef understood what he meant. After half a minute, he said, "I'm not saying kill him. At least we should figure out why Finn was forced to marry Scarlett. Once we know, we can tie them together even more tightly so he can never get divorced."

Samuel crushed out his cigarette.

"No need."

"But..."

"No buts. When I go after someone, I do it fair and square. If I really lose to him, I'll accept it."

Yosef opened his mouth and said, "Don't regret it later. I've warned you about everything I should."

Samuel said "thanks," then had nothing more to say.

Yosef could only leave.

But after going out, he still called one of his people.

"Keep investigating Finn."

The things Samuel wouldn't stoop to doing, he'd do for him.

Meanwhile.

After dinner, Amelia received a call from Bobby.

"Ms. Richardson, Mr. Lewis has been taking the medicine according to your prescription for three days now. I thought you'd come today..."

Amelia said, "Something came up. I'll come tomorrow."

Bobby paused for a moment and asked, "About what time? I'll have someone pick you up."

"I'll go there myself."

"Then about what time? So I can be prepared."

Bobby kept asking for a specific time.

So Amelia gave him one.

"Ten in the morning."

"Alright. I'll be waiting for you."

"Okay."

After the call ended, Bobby looked at Scarlett beside him and couldn't help asking, "Ms. Lewis, why did you insist I ask her exactly when she's coming?"

Scarlett smiled bitterly and said, "You've probably noticed that she and I have had conflicts. She agreed to treat my grandfather on the condition that I don't appear in front of her. But I can't bear to leave my grandfather, so I had to ask when she's coming so I can avoid her in advance."

"I see." Bobby nodded, then asked, "Don't you and Ms. Richardson have any conflict that can be resolved? Maybe I could help a little if you tell me."

Scarlett's expression was complicated, with a touch of sadness mixed in.

"You can't help. She likes my husband. Back then, she and I both pursued Finn, and Finn chose me, not her."

Bobby was surprised, but felt something wasn't quite right.

"Alright, go ahead with your work. I'll stay here and take care of Grandfather." Scarlett said.

Bobby nodded and left.

Scarlett watched the door close, then slowly sat down by Anthony's bed.

Anthony was still unconscious.

The prescription Amelia left hadn't had much effect. Anthony's waking periods were still very brief.

This was enough to prove that Amelia couldn't cure Anthony's illness.

Bobby had told her that if even Amelia couldn't cure it, then probably no one could.

In that case...

Scarlett held Anthony's aged hand and cried silently.

"I'm sorry, Grandfather."

On Amelia's end, after hanging up, she called Charles.

"Everything's been done as you said."

Amelia hummed in acknowledgment and said, "Thanks for your hard work."

Then she called Lyndon.

Lyndon said the same thing.

"Everything went smoothly according to your arrangements."

Amelia said okay, hung up, and went to Liam's room.

He was trying to walk by himself.

After Amelia knocked, there was no response from inside.

She found it strange and was about to open the door directly when it was pulled open from inside.

It was Liam who opened it.

He'd walked from the bed to the door by himself and opened it for Amelia.

Amelia's eyes sparkled with joy, though not much surprise.

"Liam, you're doing even better than a couple of days ago."

Liam nodded hard.

"Thanks to you."

"Two more days to go. Let's work hard together."

Liam smiled, showing a confident grin.

Natalie came over too.

Previously, when Amelia treated Liam, she usually called Grant only if she needed help.

Because neither of them wanted Natalie to see Liam in pain during treatment.

But the hardest times had passed, so Amelia agreed to let Natalie be present.

The three of them chatted and laughed, as if they weren't doing treatment at all.

The atmosphere was relaxed.

Soon it was the next day.

Bobby called her at eight to remind her that she was supposed to treat Anthony today.

Amelia said she remembered.

However, at nine o'clock, Bobby called again.

Asking if she'd left yet.

Amelia said, "I'll leave soon and arrive right at ten."

"Okay, Ms. Richardson." Bobby said, then apologized, "Sorry, I was afraid you might be busy, so I kept asking."

"It's fine, I understand." Amelia's tone was calm, showing no resentment, which put Bobby at ease before hanging up.

In fact, Amelia had already left.

She left half an hour early.

But she didn't go directly to the Sullivan Manor. Instead, she went to the Shadow Operations Division.

She picked up the antidote Faith had prepared.

During the preparation process, Amelia was on a video call with them the whole time, so there were no mistakes.

She took the medicine and arrived at the street where the Sullivan Manor was located twenty minutes before ten.

But she didn't go to the Sullivan Manor. Instead, she entered a dessert shop across the street.

On a weekday morning, the dessert shop had few customers.

Amelia ordered a Napoleon cake, cut it with a knife, and ate it slowly.

She didn't really like sweets, but eating something sweet occasionally could briefly boost attention and reaction speed.

Amelia sat slightly back from the window. She could see clearly across the street through the window, but people across the street couldn't see her unless they looked carefully.

After about ten minutes, Amelia saw Scarlett come out of the Sullivan Manor.

Her face was very pale, as if she were afraid of something. She put her hands together, and her lips moved up and down a few times.

Amelia could read some lip movements. Scarlett was saying, "Grandfather, please forgive me."

A cold sneer flashed in her eyes.

Things were indeed as Amelia had predicted. To deal with her, Scarlett would make a move against Anthony, who treated her like his own.

What she didn't understand was why Scarlett was still trying to deal with her when she'd already gotten what she wanted.

Logically, the one who should hold a grudge was her, not Scarlett.

Amelia thought of Finn again.

He was an honest, upright person. How did he fall for Scarlett?

Was Scarlett's disguise too good?

Or was Finn's disguise too good, and he wasn't at all the person she remembered?

Amelia soon stopped thinking about him.

She'd completely let go of Finn in her heart.

Even though thinking of him still caused a dull ache, it wasn't like before when even breathing felt difficult.

And if she searched her heart, dealing with Scarlett today was simply because Scarlett had made the first move against her.

To verify her guess, she'd even come here early.

To avoid hurting the innocent by mistake.

She'd already gone this far, so she felt no guilt.
