Chapter 307 : She Finally Woke Up
Chapter 307 : She Finally Woke Up
Jareth finally turned around. "She asked about me?"
The moment Joe got a clear look at his face, he fell silent. The corners of Jareth's eyes were red. There was no obvious tenderness there, yet something heavy seemed buried beneath the surface.
Joe nodded lightly. "More than once."
Jareth looked away and said coldly, "It's just another way of trying to please me."
Joe couldn't argue with that. He had no idea what Allison really felt for Jareth, but he knew Jareth well enough. "Jareth, the last time Madam took a bullet for you, you were so upset about being unable to protect her because of your leg that you finally agreed to treatment. That had to mean something. You cared about her. So why can't you take one more step forward?"
Joe looked at him and continued, "With how unstable you've been lately, especially after what happened today, do you think Madam would still have the courage to come near you?"
Jareth frowned. His eyes landed on Allison's pale face, and a trace of conflict appeared in his expression.
Everyone thought he had hurt her, but that wasn't what had happened at all.
What had really angered him was the fact that Allison didn't like him. That was the part he couldn't let go of.
He had never expected her temper to be so fierce. He certainly hadn't expected her to fight back.
She had never acted that way with Ronan.
The thought made Jareth sneer and let out a cold laugh. Only someone who knew they were cherished would dare act so recklessly. Yet he had foolishly believed he might receive the same treatment Ronan once did.
Since Allison's wound had only grazed her and was no longer life-threatening, Joe didn't stay in the operating room.
Outside the operating room, Joe and Oliver exchanged a glance. Both of them had something on their minds, yet neither chose to say it out loud.
When Allison finally woke up, she had already been transferred to a regular hospital room.
The first thing she saw after opening her eyes was a familiar figure standing beside her bed. The figure was tall, and impossible to ignore.
Her throat felt dry and sore. In a hoarse voice, Allison called out, "Jareth."
Jareth turned around, but he didn't come any closer. He remained standing more than a meter away from her bed.
Allison looked up at him. "You're not crazy anymore?"
There was a hint of blame in her words, as though she was holding him responsible for something.
Yet her tone was calm. It was almost as if she understood what had happened. As if he had merely thrown a tantrum, and she wasn't really angry about it.
Jareth couldn't bring himself to look at her directly. He looked away, walked over, and placed her gun on the pillow beside her.
The muzzle was pointed at him.
Allison slowly pushed herself up. The movement pulled at her wound, and a sharp pain shot through her body. She frowned slightly.
The moment he saw it, Jareth glanced at her nervously.
Leaning back against the pillow, Allison settled into a sitting position and picked up the gun.
"This was a wedding gift from a friend," she said softly. "He told me that if I ever found myself completely powerless, I could use it to try and fight back."
Jareth couldn't care less about whichever friend had given it to her. The only thing that made his anger rise all over again was one thought. "So that was your way of fighting back?" he asked coldly. "By shooting yourself?"
His voice shook with anger. Yet no matter how furious he was, he couldn't bring himself to touch her.
Jareth had always had a bad temper. Since childhood, he had learned to suppress it whenever possible. If someone annoyed him, he would ignore them. If they said something unpleasant, he would treat it as meaningless noise. But there were times when he couldn't control it.
The more someone mattered to him, the stronger his emotions became. He had treasured Allison so much, yet she had pointed a gun at herself right in front of him.
The fact that he hadn't completely lost his temper already showed how hard he was holding himself back.
Afraid that he might do something he would regret, he had smashed the room instead. Even then, he still couldn't stop himself from shouting at her. "Why is it allowed for everyone else, but not for me?" he demanded. "Why?"
Maybe Allison had been frightened and pulled the trigger by accident.
If he hadn't reacted in time, her condition would have been far worse than simply lying in a hospital bed.
If the bullet had hit him instead, things would have been much easier. He could have blamed her for everything. He could have said whatever he wanted. If he wanted to, he could have sent her abroad and kept her far away from everyone.
But she hadn't pointed the gun at him. She had pointed it at herself. So, no matter how much anger Jareth carried inside, every bit of it ended up stuck in his throat, unable to come out.
Allison looked at him and said softly, "I told you before. I didn't want to hurt you."
"You didn't do anything wrong to me," Allison said softly. "I was the one who wasn't mentally prepared. That's my problem. If I had hurt you because of it, then I wouldn't deserve to be called human."
Behind his back, Jareth's hand was balled into a tight fist. His nails dug so deeply into his palm that they nearly broke the skin. After a long silence, he finally said, "You can shoot me once to make us even. I won't dodge."
Allison couldn't help but laugh. "If we start hurting each other, then we'll only be giving Jackson exactly what he wants."
She gently pressed a hand against her stomach. "I didn't get to eat dinner last night. I'm starving. I want to eat the wontons you made."
Jareth finally looked at her. "Joe said you should only eat food that's easy to digest."
"I know," Allison replied. "I'm a doctor. But I still want wontons."
Jareth didn't argue with her. Without another word, he walked over, removed the agarwood bracelet from his wrist, and carefully slipped it onto hers.
Allison blinked, slightly startled, and watched his back as he walked out of the room.
