Chapter 45: The War Begins
The city was a broken landscape, a painting of smoke and blood, a testament to the brutal war that had erupted. Sam's boots pounded the shattered asphalt, each step a desperate bid to outrun the sound of Lisa's screams, a gruesome refrain echoing in his mind. The night, thick and humid, clung to him, a suffocating shroud of darkness. Jake's quiet stare, golden eyes never dropping as he'd have let Sam go, was a burden that weighed heavy in his soul, one he could not shake.
The bond, a tense thread stretched between the shreds of their shattered bond, hummed uncertainly, a reminder always of the alpha he'd forsaken. His claws retracted instinctively, the afterglow of Anna's power, a power he'd never thought to see, seething beneath his skin, a volatile potential for destruction waiting to be released. Nick had Lisa, and Sam was alone, Jake's dominion crumbling beneath them, the Cobras closing in on them like a tide irresistible.
He followed the trail of her scent, a faint flower breath laced with the sharp bite of fear, across the desolate wasteland of the factory, blackened remains of warehouses standing like tombstones in heavy shadow. Distant explosions echoed, their sound growing louder with each passing second, the war ignited by Tom's betrayal now raging with wild abandon. Sam's leg hurt, a dull ache from the factory beam, but he pushed on, the bond aching, a silent acknowledgment that Jake, in the chaos, was fighting also. The Cobras' setup was clear: Lisa as bait, Sam as prey, but he could not turn back, not again.
A deafening crash tore through the night, shattering the quiet, and Sam skidded to a halt. The alleyway exploded into an vacant lot strewn with rusty cranes and foul crates, a blazing battlefield full of serrated fire. Jake had his mid point, bleeding and growling as he destroyed a Cobra werewolf, his empty black eyes devoid of emotions as the thing hit the ground. Others came pouring in, ten, twelve, Nick's frenzied pack, their claws tearing, their jaws snapping, a tide of madness breaking over Jake's waning strength. Vipers, broken pieces of Jake's empire, fought with him, their cries drowned out by the raging snarls, but they were outnumbered, outarmed.
Sam's breath trapped in his throat, the chain igniting with a fiery energy, a tide of Jake's fury and suffering surging up through him, something he had no power to fight. He saw it: Jake's dominion in ruin, the alpha isolated, struggling for the crumbs of what he'd built. And then the scream, Lisa's, stabbing through the fury of battle, and Sam's gaze snapped toward the base of a massive crane. She was there, bound to a post, beaten but alive, Nick looming over her, his black eyes glinting with evil purpose, his smile as cold and cruel as a blade.
"Sam!" Lisa cried, her voice trembling, and Nick's head reeled back, his claws extended as he crept forward, freeing her from her restraints. "Right on time, little wolf," he growled, his tone a dark menace, more powerful and faster than ever before. "Let's dance."
Sam bellowed, charging, claws extended, and Nick charged to meet him, their collision a ringing slap of brutal strength. Nick's claws ripped across Sam's chest, blood bubbling, but Sam whirled around, delivering a crushing punch to Nick's jaw, the crack of bone shattering the air. They battled, a brutal duel amidst war's madness, Jake battling the pack, Sam battling their leader, the bond running amok between them.
Nick was relentless, faster than before, his black eyes unwavering as he parried Sam's slash, striking a knee into his stomach. Sam wheezed, stumbling, but the power surged within him, unholy and ancient, and he roared, claws glinting, tearing across Nick's side, blood spouting dark and thick. Nick laughed, unphased, closing on Sam's wrist and twisting, slamming him against a crate, the wood splintering from the impact.
“You’re good,” Nick taunted, circling, his claws dripping with blood. “But I’m better—upgraded, thanks to you.” He lunged, claws aimed for Sam’s throat, but Sam rolled, springing to his feet, tackling Nick to the ground, claws sinking into his shoulders. Blood pooled, and Sam snarled, pinning him, their faces inches apart, black eyes meeting his own.
Across the lot, Jake wrestled with feral ferocity, a whirlwind of claws and fury, tearing through werewolves, blood spewing his torn shirt. Vipers went down, outgunned and outclassed, Nick's pack an unstoppable wave, their feral strength dismantling Jake's kingdom piece by piece. The bond burned, Jake's desperation a reflection of Sam's own, but Sam couldn't look away, couldn't leave Nick, Lisa's life on hold.
Nick bucked, throwing Sam off, and sprang to his feet, claws tearing at Sam's leg, pain erupting hot and fiery. Sam staggered, gasping, but the power flared once again, out of control and feral, and he unleashed a roar, springing forward, claws tearing across Nick's chest, a feral retaliation for the nearly-fatal strike he had already delivered. Blood splattered, and Nick groaned, his black eyes squinting, but he didn't fall, his claws closing around Sam's throat, lifting him, choking him.
"Stronger than you think," Nick growled, a sadistic grin twisting his mouth, his fingers wrapped around him. "But not quite." He slammed Sam onto the ground, the asphalt cracking over his back, pain shooting through his body, the bond humming, a distant echo of Jake's battle. Sam clawed at Nick's arm, his blood welling, but Nick leaned in close, his black eyes glinting with evil intent, his voice low and husky. "There are more than one way to break a bond, Sam. Let me show you.
Sam stiffened, his own breathing stopped in his throat, Nick's words a deep cut of a knife into his being. The bond flared, pitiful but strong, Jake a vanishing ghost, and Nick's grin widened, grew dark and filled with comprehension, a sign of something worse than death.
