Chapter 46: The Beginning of the End
The city was burning.
Gunfire stitched through the streets, a steady staccato that drowned out the screams as Sam sprinted across the lot, his heart pounding in his ears. Smoke wafted from burning cars, their husks orange in the dark, casting jagged shadows across bodies slumped into the ground—Vipers, Cobras, civilians who'd been caught in the crossfire. The air reeked of blood, gasoline, and ash, a suffocating haze that clung to the lungs. This wasn't fighting anymore—this was war, ugly and merciless, the final unraveling of everything Jake had built.
Sam's boots splashed through a puddle—red, not water—and he gritted his teeth, the bond flickering, thin and unstable, a ghost of Jake's presence somewhere in the fire. The consequences of the last fight were behind him now, Lisa still bound where Nick had left her, her safety a vow he couldn't keep until this was finished. The Cobras had pushed deep into Russo lands, their black-eyed werewolves a tide of devastation, and Jake's troops—what remained of them after Tom's treachery—were retreating, rapidly. The Vipers were wiped out in the first wave, their bodies scattered on the streets, a testament to Nick's relentless assault.
There was no trace of Jake. The bond pulsed—pain, fury, a muffled roar—but Sam couldn't find him, couldn't feel him but for the fraying thread between them. Had he fallen, brought down by the pack like in the lot? Or was he still fighting, clinging to the empire Tom's map had exposed? Sam's chest tightened, Jake's whispered vow—"You never will"—colliding with his silence when Sam left. He pushed it down, running harder, the city's collapse a mirror of the conflict inside him.
He turned a corner and halted.
Nick stood at the center of it, a shadow in front of the firelight, his black eyes glinting like nothingness in the flickering light. The street was a graveyard—Viper bodies strewn about him, their blood pooling dark, a Cobra werewolf twitching at his feet. His smirk was appreciative, near amused, as he stepped over a body, rolling his shoulders with a predator's grace. The gash Sam had opened on him in the alley—ragged, deep—burned white on his jaw, standing out starkly against the sickly pallor of his skin, pulled taut with newfound strength. His claws were darker now, longer, shining as if they'd been immersed in something unholy—blood magic, a ritual curse, the Cobras' dark legacy.
I've been waiting for this, little wolf," Nick grated, cracking his knuckles, voice a rasp that cut through the gunfire. His grin widened, teeth glinting, a promise of violence. "No more games. This time, I don't need to take you—I just need to break you.
Sam's breath hitched, his fists clenched, the bond a far-off hum drowned out by the scream of his wolf struggling to the surface. The raw anger in him surged—Nick's taunts, Lisa's tears, Jake's kingdom devastated—straining to take control, to unleash the power he'd unleashed on Anna, the feral power that had killed Nick before. His claws elongated, longer, sharper, the air crackling as he stepped forward, smoke roiling around him.
“I’m not yours to break,” Sam growled, voice low, steady, a defiance forged in blood and betrayal. He met Nick’s gaze, black eyes locking onto his own, and felt it—the pull of their shared power, twisted mirrors of Clara’s rare blood, Nick’s reborn ferocity a dark echo of Sam’s own.
Nick merely laughed, a jagged sound that sliced through the chaos, his head tilting as he stepped closer, claws glinting. "Aren't you?" His voice was heavy with scorn, a jeer, and Sam's wolf snarled, the memory of Nick's whisper—"more than one way to break a bond"—igniting a shiver beneath his rage.
The street erupted around them—shouting, gunfire, a Viper staggering past, clutching a wounded arm—but it fell back, a distant hum as Sam and Nick circled, the battle narrowing to this moment. Jake's fight raged somewhere beyond, the bond faltering—alive, struggling—but Sam couldn't look, couldn't wait. Nick struck, a flurry of claws and dark eyes, and Sam barely dodged, spinning aside as talons tore through the space where his neck had been moments before.
Nick was faster now. Stronger. Sam had time to tense before the second strike came, a crushing blow for his ribs. He accepted it, grunting as claws tore through his forearm, but he spun, using the blow to drive his knee into Nick's belly. It should have sent him flying—Nick hadn't been as strong before—but now he staggered only slightly. A snarl distorted his lips, and he retaliated with a backhanded slap, sending Sam slamming into the sidewalk.
A shock of pain vibrated through his spine as he hit the ground hard, but he rolled, avoiding the heel that came down where his head had been. Nick's laughter echoed through the ravaged street. "Come on, Sam," he taunted, stepping closer. "This can't be all you've got."
Sam fought his way to his feet, blood pouring from his forearm. The bond thrummed, distant but there, Jake's presence a spark tenuously holding on. He had no idea if Jake was winning, losing, or dead. He knew one thing only—if he fell here, it was done.
Nick attacked him again, and this time Sam didn't dodge. He met the attack head-on, bodies colliding in a savage tangle of teeth and claws. The world narrowed to the scent of blood, the crackle of flames, the growl in Nick's throat as they fought through the wreckage, grappling for dominance. Sam landed a punch to his side, felt a rib crack, but Nick retaliated with a nasty bite to his shoulder, fangs digging deep. Pain seared through Sam's flesh, but he roared, claws raking across Nick's side, ripping deep. Black blood gouted onto the ground.
Nick wrenched free, his teeth red-stained, grinning. "That's more like it," he gasped.
Sam didn't waste words. He sprang, sending Nick backward, slamming him into the burning wreckage of a car. The metal bubbled against his back, but Nick only laughed, his black eyes glinting. His claws closed tighter around Sam's throat, squeezing. The edges of Sam's vision blurred, his lungs burning, but he pushed every final ounce of strength he had into his arms. He drove a knee into Nick's stomach, then slammed his elbow into his face, shattering his nose.
Nick recoiled, relaxing his grip, and Sam took the opportunity. He twisted, tugging at Nick's arm as he drove a claw-tipped fist into his chest, the ribs cracking beneath his strike. Nick screamed, falling back, but Sam didn't stop. He was on him in an instant, pounding him into the earth, his claws at Nick's throat.
The fire swirled over them, the fight raging behind them, but here and now there was just them. Nick's grin was gone, replaced by something else—something almost human. "You think this is done with me?" he growled, blood leaking from his lips. "You have no idea what's coming, Sam."
Sam's claws dug deeper, his chest burning. The bond pulsed weakly—Jake was alive. That was all that mattered.
"It ends now," Sam growled.
And then, with a final, vicious thrust, he tore the life from Nick's throat
