Chapter 44: Lisa is Kidnaped
The warehouse trembled as another distant explosion lit up the night, the city skyline a mad patchwork of flame and smoke. Sam was paralyzed in the half-dark, his breath harsh, the bond a faint thrum connecting him to Jake's sprawled form beside the wall. Tom's treachery (Chapter 41) had unleashed the floodgates, Nick's army tearing apart Jake's empire (Chapter 43), and Anna's battered body (Chapter 42) was a cruel reminder of the chaos closing in. Lisa huddled on the cot, her bruised face pale, her eyes darting between Sam and the shuddering windows, a frail lifeline in the wreckage.
Jake’s voice, hollow and raw, echoed in Sam’s skull—“I’ve got nothing left”—and the realization still gnawed at him: if Jake lost everything, Sam might lose him too, the bond’s fraying thread a tether he couldn’t fully cut (Chapter 36). His hands shook, blood-crusted from Anna’s throat, the power he’d tapped (Chapter 42) a shadow he couldn’t name. Rufus limped over, checking Lisa's pulse, snarling, "She's stable—needs rest," but the strain stretching his eyes contradicted his gruff tone.
"We can't stay here," Sam muttered, pivoting to Jake, his voice barely audible. "Nick's coming—Tom said it. We have to move, regroup, something." His claws hurt, the wolf protesting, torn between the alpha bleeding on the floor before him and the friend convulsing behind.
Jake lifted his head, golden eyes dim, blood dripping from his side. “Move where?” he rasped, a bitter edge to his words. “Safehouses are gone—Vipers scattered. I’ve got no play left, Sam.” The bond pulsed, faint but desperate, a plea beneath his defeat.
Sam might answer, the warehouse door exploded inward, shredding wood as darkness poured in—hooded forms, shining claws, black and unhuman eyes. Nick's werewolves (Chapter 40), wild and unpredictable, flooded the room, a wave of snarls and chaos. Sam roared, claws slashing, shoving Lisa behind him while Jake fought to his feet, taking the first with a savage swipe, blood spraying.
"Rufus—get her out!" Sam shouted, dropping a werewolf, claws ripping into its chest, but it twisted, slashing his arm, pain burning hot. Rufus pulled Lisa toward a back door, her scream piercing the battle—"Sam!"—as another beast leapt at them. Jake roared, slamming it into a wall, bones crunching, but more came, a pack too large, too fast.
Sam fought, back-to-back with Jake, their bond syncing—instinctive, seamless, a rhythm he hated needing (Chapter 39). He slashed a throat, ducked a claw, but a shadow loomed—Nick, black eyes glinting, his smirk sharp as he stepped through the chaos, untouched. “Miss me again, little wolf?” he taunted, voice a rasp, claws flexing. “Told you—we’re the same.”
Jake struck, claws for Nick's throat, but Nick avoided, faster this time, and slammed Jake into a crate, wood cracking. Sam roared, charging forward, but a werewolf tackled him, pinning him, claws digging into his shoulders. Nick laughed, motioning to his pack, and two of them dragged Lisa from Rufus's arms, pulling her kicking and screaming toward the door.
"No!" Sam roared, shoving his attacker off, claws tearing flesh, but Nick blocked his path, black eyes glinting. "She's ours now," he said, voice cold. "Leverage—Jake's Achilles' heel flows through you, Sam. Stay with him, and she dies slow. Come alone, and maybe she lives." He sneered, backing off as his werewolves retreated, Lisa's screams fading into the night.
Sam staggered, panting, blood welling from his arm, the bond raging—Jake's pain, his own fury—a chaotic vortex. Jake fought upright, coughing up blood, golden eyes wild as he fixed on Sam's face. "They have her," he gasped, voice breaking. "Nick's using us—again."
Sam's chest tightened, Lisa's scream echoing—his friend, alive after he'd mourned her (Chapter 24), now a pawn once more (Chapter 39). He stood at a fork in the road—stay with Jake, battle for the alpha who'd bound him, saved him, whose kingdom was dust (Chapter 43)? Or go after her alone, face Nick's ambush, risk all for the last shreds of his old life? The bond shook, Jake's hopelessness bleeding through, but Sam's wolf snarled, torn between loyalty and loss.
I have to go," Sam said, his voice steady, stepping back, his eyes locked on Jake's. "She's my friend—I won't let her die again." His claws unsheathed, the energy from Anna's fight (Chapter 42) simmering, a power he wasn't sure he could control but needed to utilize.
Jake's jaw was tight, blood running down his face, the bond pulsing with a rough, painful need. "You go in alone, you're dead," he growled, pushing off the wall, stumbling towards him. "Nick wants you—your talent. Stay, and we fight together—get her back."
Sam shook his head, the pull of the bond a chain he couldn't withstand. "Together's not enough—you're falling apart, Jake. I won't wait for you to get this together." He turned, making for the door, Lisa's sobs a lifeline in the dark, Nick's taunt—"the same" (Chapter 40)—egging him on.
Jake didn't stop him. He simply stood there, bloodied, golden eyes on Sam's back, the bond a thin hum, strained but there. Sam paused on the threshold, looking back—Jake's silence a presence, his stillness a question. Why? Why let him go, after the factory (Chapter 39), after the pact (Chapter 37)? The city burned outside, Cobra shadows stirring, and Sam stepped into the night, alone, Jake's gaze a shadow he could not shake.
