Chapter 145 I Thought We Were Friends! How Could You Do This to Me?
Evelyn
“What did you discover? What did you discover, Mom?”
I froze when I heard Marcus’s voice, my eyes widening as I quickly turned toward the source of the sound.
Marcus was standing behind us, his face carrying an expression I couldn’t understand.
“Marcus!” His name left my mouth in shock.
He was staring at me in shock while Adrian had his arm around my waist, and my arms were still around his neck. For a moment, I felt like I couldn’t breathe.
I pulled away from Adrian quickly, my heart trembling as I looked at my son.
“Marcus... I…”
I couldn’t finish my sentence.
“Mom... you! And Adrian?!”
His voice was filled with shock and disbelief.
I searched my mind for any excuse, any word that could explain what he had seen, but my mind was scattered and confused. I couldn’t find anything to say.
“Marcus, I can explain to you, son, please!” I was trembling as I spoke.
He didn’t look at me. He looked at Adrian with disappointment, then turned his eyes back to me.
“Adrian! How could you do this? To me? Me? I thought you were my friend!”
Tears were falling from his eyes in front of me, and I felt something break inside me.
“I thought you were my brother...” His voice was weak as he said it, then he looked at me. “And you, Mom? How... how could you do this!”
I didn’t know how to answer him. I was too confused, and all I could do was look at him while Adrian held my hand in front of him.
I stared at our hands in shock, then looked at Adrian.
“There’s nothing to hide now, Evelyn!” My heart felt like it stopped.
“And Evelyn too?” Marcus said those words as if he was still trying to understand what he was seeing.
“Adrian, what are you doing...?” I was trembling.
He looked at me confidently. “You don’t have to be afraid, I’m with you!”
I couldn’t answer.
Adrian looked at Marcus and said honestly, “We’re in a relationship, Marcus.”
I closed my eyes. My heart was beating so hard that I felt like it would come out of my chest.
The moment had come...
The moment I had been afraid of all this time.
“What?”
I opened my eyes when I heard Marcus’s voice. Tears were running down his face, and when I saw him like this, I felt my own eyes filling with tears.
“Marcus...” His name left me as I cried.
“How could you do this to me? Adrian, I considered you my brother... for fuck’s sake!”
He was looking at Adrian with eyes full of reproach.
“Son, please listen to me, I…”
But Marcus cut me off.
“What am I supposed to listen to? What are you going to tell me, Mom? Huh? Everything is clear now. I was the fool between you two! I should have known you liked him... Why him? Why my friend out of everyone? Damn it! He’s my age!”
I found nothing to say. My hands were trembling, and my heart was beating with fear, as if all my thoughts had scattered inside my head.
“You two were together all day while I was looking for you both like a madman... I suspected you two, I won’t deny that, but I pushed those thoughts away... I lied to myself and said there was no way my mom would do that... There was no way they would do something like this to me... I was worried about both of you... I was just passing by when I saw you two and I couldn’t believe it. I almost called my own eyes liars, Mom!”
Every word he said hurt me.
“Marcus, listen to me, I…”
I tried to speak again.
“What are you going to tell me, Mom? I saw you two kissing, for fuck’s sake!”
He shouted while crying. I felt ashamed and hurt, and I couldn’t even raise my eyes to him.
“You two deceived me!”
His tone was so sad that my heart clenched.
He looked at Adrian.
“You know, Adrian? Dad used to say he wasn’t comfortable with you, and he wasn’t comfortable with the way you acted, but I defended you when he wasn’t there... I thought we were friends! How could you do this to me? Huh?”
He shouted in his face.
Adrian remained silent.
“Marcus! I…”
Adrian tried to speak, but Marcus cut him off coldly. “I don’t want to hear anything from you!”
Marcus’s tears kept falling without stopping. His expression changed, as if he remembered something.
He smiled sadly and looked at Adrian, then at me.
“The day I called you, Mom... Adrian was with you, wasn’t he... It was him. I didn’t want to bother you by asking who he was until you introduced me to him, but in the end, it turned out he was my friend!”
“You were with my friend. He disappeared that day too... Even... even those marks on Adrian’s back were from you, Mom...”
I froze when he said that. I couldn’t even find a way to deny his words.
He put his hands over his face, then raised his head toward the sky. “I can’t believe this. I was deceived by the people closest to me!”
I looked at him while crying and shook my head in denial.
“How long have you two been together? Huh?”
I couldn’t answer.
“Tell me how long. Huh?”
I remained silent. I was only crying.
Adrian answered for me. “Since you had that fight with Kymer!”
Marcus looked at him, and I could see in his eyes that he had started putting everything together.
“What? You two have been together for two and a half months? And I didn’t know? Everything was right in front of me, but I didn’t know... I didn’t know because I trusted you two... I’m the idiot who didn’t notice...”
He stepped back several steps.
He began remembering everything out loud, and I listened to him, feeling every memory he mentioned drive something into my heart.
When he came to me and found Adrian there.
When he entered the department and found Adrian and me alone.
When we disappeared at the same time.
When I was crying by the river because of Adrian.
When I drowned and Adrian was crying and afraid for me in an excessive way.
When Adrian got drunk and hugged me.
Everything had been right in front of him.
Yet he hadn’t discovered it.
“Thank you both for this!”
He said it while crying, then turned around and walked away.
“Marcus! Wait!”
I ran after him while crying.
I left Adrian behind, standing in his place and looking at the ground, while I ran after my son.
