Chapter 192: She Operates on Him Herself

Chapter 192: She Operates on Him Herself

Diana closed her eyes, the image of Charles throwing himself in front of that blade searing through her mind.

She opened her eyes, steel in her voice." Prep for surgery."

The operation lasted a full eight hours.

When Diana emerged from the operating room, she was completely drained.

Victor and Nathan, who had been waiting anxiously outside, immediately rushed toward her.

"Diana, how is he?" Victor asked, his voice trembling.

Diana removed her surgical mask, her face pale as porcelain. "He'll live. The knife missed his major arteries, but he lost too much blood. With how run-down he's been, recovery will be slow."

Victor's shoulders sagged with relief, tears running down his cheeks. "Thank you, Diana. Thank you for bringing him back."

Diana shook her head, watching as the operating room doors swung open and Charles was wheeled out. He lay there motionless, the oxygen mask fogged with his breath.

"Diana watched as they wheeled Charles past. 'When he wakes up, tell him we're staying."

Charles awakened three days later.

The first thing Charles saw wasn't the hospital ceiling, but a tiny face inches from his own.

Daisy was prodding his oxygen mask with one curious finger."The mean daddy's awake!"Daisy squealed."

Charles smiled weakly, his voice hoarse. "Daisy..."

Jason didn't look up from his book. "Don't get your hopes up. Mommy only saved you because she's a doctor. She's been busy with her lab's clinical trials these past few days and has no time to deal with you."

Charles's expression dimmed, then brightened again. Having the children stay by his side already represented a shift in Diana's attitude.

"Jason, thank you both."

"Thank me for what?" Jason walked over, his eyes complex as he studied the wound on Charles's back. "Since you didn't die, you'd better not waste it. Mommy's coming tomorrow to change your bandages."

At those words, Charles's eyes immediately lit up.

The next day, Diana indeed came.

She came in wearing jeans and a sweater, medical bag in hand, her face unreadable.

"Lie face down," she said curtly.

Charles obediently positioned himself on the hospital bed, feeling Diana's cool fingers working across his back.

"Diana, I'm sorry," he said again.

"If that's all you know how to say, then shut up." Diana skillfully removed the gauze. "The wound is healing well, but there will be a scar."

"A scar is good," Charles said, his voice muffled. "A scar will remind me of all the foolish things I've done, and remind me that you saved my life."

Diana's hand paused momentarily as she applied the medication, then she pressed harder, making Charles hiss in pain.

"Diana, if... if I transfer all of Windsor Group's shares to Jason and Daisy, could you give me a probationary period?" Charles turned his head, his eyes burning with hope as he looked at her.

"Do you think I need money?"

"No, I just want to give you everything I have." Charles spoke earnestly. "I'm not asking you to forgive me right now. I just want a chance. A chance to drive the children to school every day, to occasionally take you out for dinner."

Diana looked at him, silent for a long time.

"Charles, five years ago, I begged you to give me a chance, to let you hear my explanation. You refused." Diana packed up her medical bag. "Now you want a chance. That depends on your performance. As for the shares, that's your compensation to the children. I won't interfere."

With that, she turned and left.

Though still cold, Charles detected a slight softening in her tone.

"Nathan!" Charles shouted toward the door.

Nathan rushed in immediately. "Mr. Windsor, your orders?"

"Find out what Diana's lab needs. Set up an anonymous donation—five hundred million!"

Nathan wiped his sweat. "Yes, Mr. Windsor."

Half a month later, Charles was discharged.

He didn't return to Windsor Manor, but instead bought an apartment in Diana's building.

Every morning at six o'clock sharp, he appeared at Diana's door with breakfast he'd made himself. Though Diana usually just took the food and closed the door in his face, Charles remained undeterred.

This particular day, Daisy suddenly ran out and hugged Charles's leg.

"Big meanie daddy, it's Mommy's birthday today! You didn't know, did you?"

Charles's heart skipped a beat. He'd been so overwhelmed he'd actually forgotten Diana's birthday.

"Daisy, how does Mommy usually celebrate her birthday?"

Daisy tilted her head."Mr. Williams used to take us in hot air balloons and buy big cakes. But Mommy likes stars better than parties."

Looking at stars?

Charles was thoughtful.

Diana came home exhausted to find her apartment pitch black.

"Jason? Daisy?"

No response.

Suddenly, she heard a soft mechanical humming from the balcony.

Diana walked over and pushed open the balcony doors, instantly freezing in place.

Hundreds of drones rose into the night sky, forming constellations before spelling out: 'Happy Birthday, Diana.'

Next, the formation shifted, creating silhouettes of Diana with Jason and Daisy.

Below in the courtyard, Charles stood under the lamplight with flowers in his hands.

Daisy and Jason ran out too, each carrying a balloon.

"Mommy, make a wish!" Daisy shouted.

Diana looked at the sky full of "stars," at the man below who was once so unreachable but now looked at her with such humility, and her eyes finally moistened again.

She came downstairs and faced him. "This is how you plan to prove yourself?"
