Chapter 191: Forever Just Mr. Windsor

Chapter 191: Forever Just Mr. Windsor

Jason paused, pointing at Diana. "Second—if you can't make Mommy forgive you, you'll always be 'Mr. Windsor' to us. Got it?"

Charles stared at Jason, his heart breaking and swelling with pride at the same time. He nodded solemnly. "I understand. I'll earn the right to be called Daddy."

Daisy poked her head out from behind Jason. "You have to try really, really hard, Mr. Windsor."

Diana's cheeks flushed slightly as she took Daisy and Jason's hands. "The bus is here. Let's go."

Charles watched the bus disappear, knowing this was only the beginning of the longest fight of his life. This time, he wouldn't just need to win Diana's heart—he'd have to earn Daisy and Jason's acceptance too.

Celeste's surgery recovery was progressing well, but the atmosphere at Windsor Manor had exploded after one particular report arrived.

Victor's hands shook as he pointed at the DNA report, then at Charles—disheveled and hollow-eyed—before slamming his fist on the desk..

"You worthless fool!" Victor's rage sent him into a coughing fit."You told me she was dead! You said the baby died, too! Your incompetence forced my great-grandchildren to survive on their own for five years!"

Charles knelt on the floor in silence, enduring the blows from Victor's cane on his back.

"Grandfather, I was wrong," Charles said in a low voice. "Diana still won't forgive me, but I'll work to earn her forgiveness."

Hearing this, Victor fell silent too. He knew Diana's temperament well—beneath her gentle exterior lay a stubborn heart that loved and hated with equal intensity.

Victor sighed, his eyes growing misty. "Transfer a third of Windsor Group to her name—stocks, trusts, everything! And all my jewelry collections! If she won't trust the Windsor name, then she can own it!"

"Money won't work, Grandfather. She's a world-class surgeon now—she doesn't need our wealth. What she wants is proof that I've changed."

"change?" Victor glared. "Forget the office. Be her driver, her chef, her shadow—whatever it takes. If she won't forgive you, then camp outside her door until she does!"

Charles was stunned, then nodded firmly. "Yes, Grandfather."

And so, Emerald City witnessed a remarkable sight.

The once arrogant Charles now drove a low-key black sedan every day, stationed outside Diana's laboratory. When Diana emerged, he'd hand her coffee and food. When she gave him the cold shoulder, he'd silently follow ten feet behind like a loyal shadow.

Since Diana now lived in the secure expert apartments arranged by the lab, Charles couldn't get inside. He actually booked a long-term room at the hotel across the street, monitoring the apartment building daily.

This particular day, as Diana finished work, heavy rain began to fall.

She stood at the lab entrance preparing to hail a cab when a black umbrella appeared over her head.

Charles was soaked through, having clearly waited in the rain for a long time. He angled the umbrella toward Diana, leaving most of his shoulder exposed to the downpour.

"Diana, let me drive you. It's hard to get a cab in this weather," Charles said humbly, with a hint of pleading.

Diana looked at his drenched shirt, then at his bloodshot eyes, feeling her heart flutter slightly. But she immediately snorted coldly. "Save the act, Mr. Windsor. I'm not impressed."

"It's not a performance," Charles said softly. "I was just thinking—if I could have held an umbrella for you during that rainy car accident five years ago, how wonderful that would have been."

Diana's body went rigid. That was her deepest wound.

As the two stood in deadlock, an unwelcome visitor appeared.

Beckett—Laura's father—emerged from the shadows with a vicious expression, clutching a gleaming knife.

"Charles! Diana! You killed my daughter and bankrupted us! I'll make you both pay with your lives!"

Beckett charged at them like a madman.

Seeing the blade aimed at Diana, Charles instinctively spun around and pulled her tightly into his arms.

"Thunk—"

The wet sound of steel meeting flesh cut through the rain.

Diana felt warm liquid splash onto her neck.

She looked up in horror to see Charles's face turn deathly pale instantly, yet he still held her shoulders firmly, protecting her in his embrace while whispering, "Don't be afraid... Diana, don't look..."

"Charles!" Diana screamed.

By then, Nathan and the bodyguards had reacted, quickly subduing Beckett.

Beckett laughed maniacally like a lunatic: "Charles, you deserve to die too! This is your punishment!"

"Charles, wake up! Charles!" Diana pressed her trembling hands against the wound on his back, but blood kept flowing through her fingers no matter how hard she tried to stop it. Her medical training told her the wound was fatal without immediate surgery.

Charles collapsed in her arms, rainwater mixing with blood. He struggled to lift his hand, wanting to touch Diana's face but afraid his bloodied hand would stain her.

"If this is it... can you forgive me?"

"You're not allowed to die!" Diana cried hysterically. "Don't you dare die on me! You owe Jason and Daisy five years! If you die, I'll marry Lucas and let him be their father!"

Charles managed a ghost of a smile."Then I... can't die... can I?"

With that, he fell completely unconscious.

The ambulance wailed as it arrived.

Diana scrubbed in as the lead surgeon.

For the first time in her career, her hands were shaking.

"Dr. Johnson, he's lost over a liter of blood. We need to move now!" her assistant reminded her.
