Chapter 55 — Can’t Be Strong Anymore

Robert POV:

“Get away from her!” I yelled at him, but he just took more steps towards her. I went towards her but a few more men came and surrounded us. They pointed a gun at Hailey and me.

“Stand back, Robert. Now it’s my time.” he reached Hailey.

She was crying badly. She was traumatized again. Again. No…This can’t happen. I can’t fail.

“I’ll give you everything John, leave her,” I said to him again, but he ignored me. He forced Hailey to look at him.

“That day I stopped.” He smirked. “Today I want, and I will do it in front of your husband.”

“John!!” I yelled but he didn’t even pay any heed.

“Let’s go inside.”

He smirked as he went inside. His men took Hailey inside and they forced me to go too.

I was scared but I had to do something. This can’t happen.

When we reached inside, he just smirked widely. “So, Hailey, how about you divorce him first?”

My eyes widened. She didn’t reply, she was crying too much to even listen to him.

“C’mon Hailey! Just divorce again!”

She looked at him confused. Then she looked at me. “A-again?”

I sighed heavily. “Don’t listen to him. Concentrate on me.”

She nodded slowly. John finally got a hold of her face and forced her to look at him again.

Seeing his hand on her face tighten, my blood boiled too much. I looked around to make a plan.

If I go and attack him, his people’s eventual attack will be on me. If I’ll be shot, they'll aim for Hailey…But they’ll not if John is shot too.

Taking anyone else’s gun will be difficult. I'll have to kick him hard, take the gun and shoot John before they shoot me, so no one shoots Hailey.

Great plan.

I looked at John and studied his moves. “Yes, again! Your husband is hiding a lot from you…”

I got ready and took a deep breath. You can do this.

I ran to John and kicked him very hard. He fell to the ground with a loud groan. Unexpectedly, his gun slipped away too far. I didn’t know what to do so I panicked. Everyone aimed for me. I took Hailey’s hand and started running out…But two of them shot me.

As I came out, I continued running. I was feeling extremely tired, and it was difficult to move.

“Hailey…” I whispered. I was feeling I was gonna faint for sure. The people were still behind me. “Hailey…Run…”

She looked at me. She was still not in her complete senses but looked at me with pain. “I…Uh…What do I do…”

“Run Hailey…They…They’ll shoot you…”

I found my eyes closing. I stopped as I couldn’t run anymore. I would rather use my strength to make her understand and run than run another meter.

“And what about you?”

“Died saving you, seems like a good enough reason to me.” I smiled at her.

She was shocked hearing my words. “Robert! How can you accept defeat? You never did!”

“I…”

“I know it's hard! But you? You are Robert Anderson. The mafia boss who ruled the mafia world with his logic and reasoning! He was known to be so strong and to never give up! Yet here he is, again accepting defeat for me? Robert. You can’t.”

I looked at her with my strength almost draining. She remembers everything?

“Hai…”

“Come on, now! They are coming!!” she yelled looking at the men following him.

“Bye. Hailey.” He smiled at her and went towards the men. “Run away to Alex. He’ll save you.”

“Robert!!! I love you!! Please don’t do this!”

“I…But Hailey…”

“He…He did that to me, do you want him to win? What will happen to me If you go away? You selfish bastard, don’t give up!!” She ran to him and grabbed his hand. Then they started to run away.

Even though the men were confused by what was happening, they managed to shoot Hailey’s hand. She groaned in pain but hid it.

As they left him behind, Hailey managed to run with him. She managed his weight and carried him further till they reached the part of the city which was much more populated.

People called Ambulance as soon as they noticed the popular couple being so injured. Robert fainted just as he saw her being taken in the ambulance too. She looked at him.

He smiled at her. “I loved this life. I loved being with you and even if I don’t make it, I was glad that you loved me enough to bring me here even if you remember everything now.”

Her breathing was exaggerated. “I love you and how dare God take you away from me. You know that I love you more than God, so you’ll stay here.”

He closed his eyes after hearing that. The beautiful thought pondered in his heart as his heartbeat slowed down.
