Chapter 66: Tension

Chapter 66: Tension
Amara's POV

I was called for a meeting by Andrew, which I would have found kind of weird, but I didn't find it weird seeing as Lucas was being a little bitch. I just hoped this meeting had Lila in it.

I walked into the meeting room and realized that I was informed about this meeting really late. Because there was no way everyone was informed right now with me and were already all seated and settled as if they'd been here for the past ten minutes at least.

I looked towards Lila who stared back at me with an apologetic face that was enough to tell me that she wanted to tell me herself, but maybe she didn't have the chance or they didn't let her go.

“My dumb sucker cousin didn't let her leave this room, so she begged me to go get you because she was saving a seat for you.” Andrew whispered in my ear as we both stood at the door. “I think I was too slow seeing as that seat doesn't exist anymore.”

He was right. There were only two seats left. One beside Lucas and the other beside some random white dude. Neither were good options to me, but one was more manageable if you asked me.

I walked in and felt eyes burn into my skin as I moved towards the seat beside the old man.

“Oops, sorry.” Andrew yelled out causing me to almost jump out of my skin as he dove in front of me. “I'm sorry but this seat belongs to me.” He flashed me a sickly sweet smile. “You can have that one though.”

No.

No. No. No.

I didn't want that one.

I looked to Lila for help but there was clearly nothing she could do at this point. After seeing the glare being shot at me from every side of the table, I forced my legs to move and went and took the seat beside Lucas', getting myself ready for whatever shit he was going to throw at me.

I kept my back straight, chest out and head up as I walked to the seat, holding eye contact with Lucas at a point, because I was not about to let him feel like he had an effect on me.

I genuinely don't even know how such a piece of shit could be best friends with someone as awesome as Ezra, and even if I never expected to say this, Andrew is beginning to seem more like he has a heart compared to Lucas.

With a mental shake of the head, I went and took my seat.

“Miss Amara,” Lucas smiled as he leaned over the table at me, “it's nice of you to finally join us.”

“Isn't it?” I replied without thinking. “I mean, it has to be, seeing as I just got the information right fucking now that we have a meeting when others seem to have known for….hmm, let me think….quite a while? So yeah, you must be happy to have me, sir.”

Gasps and wide open mouths were all that filled the table now, and I'll gladly take that rather than the glares that were being stabbed into my back.

I looked over at Lila and she also looked so shocked, but instead of the terrified shock that filled other people's faces, this one was a proud one. Andrew though, is a freaking different species because instead of being mad at me for speaking in such manner to his cousin, he had the widest fucking grin on his face.

“Well, now that that's over, let's get on to the reason why I called you all here.”

My eyes widened in shock. Lucas didn't sound angry or even like it was him I had just talked to. He was totally unaffected.

Oh well. That one just went down the drain, didn't it? Although I can't lie, that most definitely showed him a different part of me and one I planned to keep for a long time.

Lucas got up from his seat and started pacing behind our seats, talking about……. whatever it was he was talking about.

I don't know if he was doing this intentionally, although I really feel like he was, but he kept lightly brushing against me as he paced, and he'll sometimes stop directly beside me when asking or answering a question, and no matter how hard I tried to pretend like I wasn't affected, my body just didn't seem to get the hint. My hands were shaking and my heart was racing. I had even put my hands in my lap and just prayed that no one would notice, although I highly doubt that he and Lila haven't noticed already. Or even Andrew who somehow seemed to notice everything that happened whenever it happened.

Finally, to my relief, the meeting was finally over and everyone had to leave. I quickly got up, closed my laptop that was open on the desk and was ready to run so that I could walk out with Lila.

“Oh, and Amara, the board has insisted that you and I go together on a business trip tomorrow, so I need you to be here really early tomorrow. Goodbye.”

I stood frozen as Lucas' words resonated in my head. I could feel a lot of people staring at me and I could see that some were whispering, but I didn't care.

“Come on Amara.” Lila called from where she had walked up beside me.

I tried to take a step, but I was paralyzed in shock.

“Girl, fucking move.” Lila growled and pulled me forward and we started moving out of the meeting room.

Fuck.

In times like this, I regret more why I didn't tell Ezra what was happening. Why I had kept all this a secret for so long.

Lila pulled me until we were in her cubicle and then she looked at me with a very sad and scared look on her face.

“What? What is it, Lila?” I asked in confusion and fear too.

“Okay, first of all, I loved what you did there when he tried to get under your skin. Good job, girl.” She grinned as she gave me a high five.

“Well, you looked kind of scared just a few moments ago, so I'm sure there's something else going on.”

“Well, no. I'm not scared, just a little bit worried for you?”

“Worried for me why?” I asked, getting more suspicious with every word that came out of her mouth.

“The tension between you and Lucas in that meeting room was palpable, and the people started whispering. They're all whispering about how they think you two are sharing a bed.”

My eyes widened as my hands flew into my hair. “Fuck.”

“Yup.” She nodded as she leaned back on her desk.

“What do I do now?” I asked as I paced the room.

“It's kind of a good thing that you two would be stuck together tomorrow. Tell him what's going on, ask him to find a way to put a stop to it. If he doesn't agree, threaten to tell Ezra about everything that's been going on with you two.”

I hoped it didn't get to the stage whereby I would have to threaten him, not to talk more or tell Ezra about it, but Lila was right. I had to find a way to put a stop to the rumors.
