Chapter 227 He Got Angry
"Sorry." Harriet apologized solemnly. "I was the one who drugged you and made you fall into a deep sleep so I could go see Lark."
Tristan asked, "Lark told me that Nolan knew right away that my body wasn't damaged after I blocked the knife for you, and he secretly leaked this information to Lark. Did you know about all this?"
"I knew." Harriet answered calmly. "Lark is someone with no moral boundaries. She went to Nolan and threatened him with his wife and daughter's ashes and his in-laws' lives."
"But what she didn't know was that right after she hung up, Nolan secretly contacted me."
"He confessed what he'd done before, and then we discussed how to rescue his in-laws. After all, those two elderly people were dragged into this disaster because of me."
Tristan frowned. "So that's why you two worked together today?"
"Yes." Harriet admitted. "On the surface, I only got Nolan's call today and agreed to help him, but actually, we'd already planned everything."
"Niamh disguised herself as Dr. Smith and took the chance to poison Lark. Nolan arranged for drones to drop smoke bombs at the agreed time. The smoke bombs contained poison gas to deal with those mercenaries."
"At the same time, Nolan had already found out where his in-laws were being held and secretly arranged for people to rescue them."
Tristan gave a cold laugh. "You two really worked well together."
"As long as we achieve our goal, nothing else matters."
"Doesn't matter?" Tristan grabbed her shoulders and forcibly turned her around. "You kept everything from me, even drugged me, to go work with Nolan."
"Harriet, did you ever consider my feelings?"
"Tristan, what's more important—your feelings, or avenging Rhea and saving people?" Harriet asked back.
"That's not the same thing!" Tristan stressed. "I'm your husband. Whatever you want to do, I'll help you do it. But I don't want you keeping me in the dark and going to work with another man. Do you understand?"
"Tristan, didn't you say before that Lark found me so quickly because someone leaked my location?" Harriet explained. "But you never found out who leaked it, so I couldn't be sure whether there was a mole working for Lark around us."
"That's why I kept it from you. The fewer people who knew about this, the safer it would be. I drugged you to prevent any mole from watching our every move."
"I was just working with Nolan to save people, not doing anything shameful. You really don't need to mind." Harriet lowered her eyes. "And in this matter, I had my own considerations. I didn't want to drag you into it."
"When did I ever say I was afraid of being dragged into your problems!" Tristan demanded. "Harriet, I can live with you, die with you, face all unknown dangers with you."
"But you never considered my feelings. When something happened, you didn't think of me first!"
Harriet looked at his stern face. "Tristan, I'm already very grateful that you helped me get Dr. Smith back, but I don't want you or Apex Global Group to suffer serious damage because of me."
Tristan laughed coldly. "You're afraid of dragging me down, but not afraid of dragging Nolan down, is that it?"
Harriet explained, "It's not that I wanted to drag Nolan into this—Lark came to him first. He and I never had anything between us. You don't need to overthink it."
"Am I overthinking, or did you go too far?" Tristan let go of her. "Forget it. You should go get your treatment. I'm leaving."
Harriet watched his tall, straight figure and wanted to call out to him, but didn't know what to say.
She collected herself and went into the room to take a bath.
Hot spring water mixed with medicine Ondine had prepared—she needed to soak twice a day, morning and evening.
Harriet soaked in the warm water, but still felt cold inside.
"What's wrong?" Ondine sat in a chair nearby, adding medicine. "Did you fight with Tristan?"
"Not really a fight." Harriet said softly. "He's always been sensitive about Nolan. Today was such an important matter, and I didn't discuss it with him—I just worked directly with Nolan. He's angry."
"Why don't you just explain it to him clearly?"
"The Romanov family won't let this go. I really don't want to drag him into it." Harriet leaned against the edge of the tub. "Actually, right now, the smartest thing for him would be to distance himself from me, but I know he won't do that."
"He's very good to you."
"That's exactly why I'm scared." Harriet closed her eyes. "I'm afraid I'll drag him down."
"I actually think Tristan isn't someone who can't handle things." Ondine said while adding medicine to the water. "Not all married couples can share hardships together."
"You don't want to drag him down because you care about him, but he might not see it that way. Maybe you should respect his choice."
Harriet's mind was in chaos.
Her phone suddenly rang. It was Ryder calling.
Harriet dried her hands and picked up the phone. "Ryder."
"Mrs. Lancaster, the mercenaries who were poisoned by the gas have been taken into police custody. If you're still awake, the police need to take your statement tonight."
"I'm awake. I can go to the station anytime."
"I'll bring them to you. At a time like this, it's better if you don't leave Apex Global Group." Ryder said. "Lark is dead. The Romanov family will definitely make a move. I heard people from the Romanov family have already flown to Emberfall tonight."
"Lark is dead?" Harriet frowned. "How could it be so fast?"
The poison she specially made should have made Lark suffer for at least 24 hours. It couldn't have killed her this quickly.
"Mr. Lancaster did it himself." Ryder reported. "I was right there. Lark probably knew she had no way out and was in unbearable pain, so she said a lot of things to provoke Mr. Lancaster."
"Tristan is usually calm and not easily provoked." Harriet's eyes felt sore and stinging. "He did this because he didn't want the responsibility to fall on me after Lark died. If he did it, then he killed her, not me."
Ryder quickly brought the police to take Harriet's statement.
Ryder must have already smoothed things over. The police only asked about what happened and left without mentioning Lark's death.
Ryder had been listening the whole time. After the police left, he finally had a chance to speak. "Mrs. Lancaster, you were prepared? You made sure people would think Lark died from snake venom?"
"Of course I wouldn't risk myself just to get revenge." Harriet said coldly. "The poison I gave her was extracted from snake venom. Before I left, I took out a snake I'd prepared beforehand and made it bite her hand."
Ryder nodded. "Mr. Lancaster didn't know about your arrangement, so it must be like you said—he was afraid you'd be implicated in Lark's death, so he took action himself."
"But I heard that Nolan also sent someone to turn themselves in, saying his people had no choice but to shoot Lark to save Chase."
"Mrs. Lancaster, both Mr. Lancaster and Nolan want to take the blame for you."
Harriet pressed her lips together slightly. "Where is Tristan?"
"In his office."
"I'll go find him."
Harriet came to the top floor and opened the door to the executive office.
The next second, two figures—a man and a woman—on the sofa suddenly appeared before her eyes!
