Chapter 226 The Truth Emerges
Lark's blood was boiling. She went to grab a gun from the bodyguard, "Harriet, I'm going to kill you!"
Before Lark could get the gun, several loud bangs came from outside, and then white smoke drifted in from all directions.
The bodyguards standing guard around them fell to the ground one after another.
Lark suddenly realized what was happening and quickly raised her hand to cover her mouth and nose, but it was too late.
Her legs gave way, and she collapsed to the ground with a thud.
There was poison gas in the smoke. Lark couldn't move, but she was still conscious.
Harriet took out an antidote from her hair accessory and fed it to Chase, who had fainted from the poison.
Then Harriet picked up a gun from the ground and aimed it at Lark.
Lark's face went pale, "No! Harriet, you can't kill me! Murder is illegal!"
"If I had killed you earlier, none of this would have happened, and Rhea wouldn't have died." Harriet's lips curved slightly, "I really regret not killing you sooner!"
"Harriet, don't!"
A gunshot startled the birds in the reeds outside, sounding especially jarring in the quiet night sky.
Lark trembled with fear, then looked at the bullet that hit the ground beside her and breathed a sigh of relief.
But the next second, she felt warmth spreading through her lower body.
She had actually wet herself from fear!
Endless humiliation swept through every nerve in her body. Lark roared in rage, "Harriet, you bitch! Bitch!"
Niamh stepped forward and took the gun from Harriet's hand, "You still can't do it, can you?"
Harriet glanced at Lark on the ground, "I've already called the police. They'll be here soon. She can't escape."
"But the Romanov family will definitely protect her."
"I know." Harriet smiled, "That's why the poison I made has no antidote. I swore to avenge Rhea. How could I let her live?"
Niamh carried Chase on her back, and the three of them left together.
Outside the cabin, bodyguards lay scattered everywhere.
Just as they were about to leave, several cars drove up from a distance.
Niamh's heart jumped, "Could it be people from the Romanov family!"
Harriet looked carefully, "No, it's not."
Tristan got out of the car and quickly walked up to Harriet, "How are you? Are you hurt?"
Harriet shook her head.
"Harriet, how could you keep this from me and act on your own?" Tristan demanded.
"Now's not the time to talk about this." Harriet looked at him, "Lark is inside. If you take her back now, the Romanov family won't come after you."
"I'll take responsibility for what I've done. If the Romanov family wants revenge, they can come after me alone."
"You've already planned my way out?" Tristan frowned, "But Harriet, have you forgotten that we're husband and wife!"
"I haven't forgotten. It's precisely because we're husband and wife that I don't want to drag you down." Harriet said, "You go in. I'll take Chase back."
Tristan walked into the cabin with a dark expression.
The smoke had cleared, but the drug's effect hadn't worn off. Lark lay on the ground, unable to move.
Seeing Tristan come in, Lark grabbed onto him like a lifeline, "Tristan... Tristan, save me!"
"Harriet's gone crazy! She's a doctor who's supposed to save lives, but she poisoned me to kill me! Tristan, I'm in so much pain! Please save me!"
Tristan looked down at her from above, "Didn't I warn you not to provoke Harriet again, or I'd kill you myself? Did you just ignore my words?"
Lark's tears streamed down her face, "Tristan, everything I did was for you. What did I do wrong!"
"Even now, you still don't know how to repent." Tristan's face grew colder, "Or do you think that because you've become the Romanov family's daughter, I really won't dare to kill you?"
"You want to kill me?" Lark was stunned, "Tristan, I saved your life. Are you going to repay kindness with murder?"
"Saving me isn't your shield. You're beyond redemption."
"Beyond redemption?" Lark laughed desperately, "Fine, Tristan, since you want to kill me, let me tell you a secret!"
"Actually, I wasn't the one who saved you back then. When I got there, you had already been rescued. I just went along with it, soaked myself in the water to get wet, and pretended I was the one who saved you."
"What did you say?" Tristan's pupils suddenly contracted, "If it wasn't you, then who saved me?"
"How would I know?" Lark sneered, "Do you think I really loved you? No, I've always loved myself the most."
"After you became a vegetable, I put on an act, pretending to be kidnapped, just so I wouldn't have to marry you. I just didn't expect Harriet would end up becoming Mrs. Lancaster."
"I never expected a vegetable could wake up. What a miscalculation."
"Oh, and later when you blocked a knife for Harriet and the doctor said you couldn't have sex, and I said I didn't mind and wanted to marry you—that was also a lie."
"It was because Nolan secretly told me that you actually could have sex, so I said I didn't mind."
"Tristan, do you regret treating me as your savior all those years? You even sent Harriet to prison because of me!"
"Oh, did Harriet tell you that even my wheelchair was fake? I took nerve-paralyzing drugs in advance, staged falling down the stairs myself, and framed Harriet for pushing me. Even Mr. Jones concluded I was really crippled. Aren't I clever?"
"So Tristan, Harriet going to prison and having her life ruined—you can't just blame me. You played a part in it too!"
"If you hadn't misjudged people and hadn't seen through my true nature earlier, she wouldn't have had to suffer that year in prison!"
Lark looked at Tristan's increasingly dark expression and continued, "She had a really hard time in prison that year. Do you know why?"
"Because I specifically paid people off. She almost didn't survive several times, and she was almost assaulted by those female inmates!"
Tristan's heart clenched violently. He suddenly pulled out a gun and aimed it at Lark on the ground!
Three gunshots rang out, and everything fell silent.
Lark spat out a mouthful of blood. Through her blurry vision, she struggled to see the face before her clearly.
"So... it feels so good... not having to pretend... I really feel like such a failure... lived over twenty years... and I don't even know who I am..."
"Tristan... dying by your hand... isn't so bad..."
"I forced you to kill me on purpose... this way... the Romanov family... won't let you go..."
"I... I want you both... to destroy each other... I want Harriet... to never have peace..."
Lark stopped breathing, her eyes wide open, unable to rest in peace.
Apex Global Group.
Harriet stood in front of the floor-to-ceiling window, looking at a photo of her and Rhea on her phone, tears streaming down her face.
"Rhea, I've avenged you."
"I'm sorry. If it weren't for me, you wouldn't have died."
"Don't worry, I'll definitely take care of your family for you."
Ondine walked to her side, "Was it worth getting blood on your hands for revenge?"
"Yes." Harriet said firmly, "Only with Lark dead will there be no chance for her to hurt the people around me again."
"I can't let anyone else around me die because of me."
Suddenly there was a knock at the door, and Tristan came in.
Ondine tactfully returned to her room.
Tristan walked to Harriet's side and said calmly, "Don't you owe me an explanation about what happened tonight?"
