Chapter 135 Pre-Marital Love
Griffin had barely left when Rhea arrived.
"Mrs. Lancaster, I heard you were injured, so I rushed over. Let me stay and take care of you."
Harriet didn't object, only asking, "Did Tristan send you?"
Rhea replied, "Ryder called me, not Mr. Lancaster."
Harriet said nothing more. With her limited mobility, having Rhea around would indeed make things much easier.
"Mrs. Lancaster, are you hungry? Should I make you a late-night snack?"
"I'm not hungry. Just help me wash up."
"Okay."
After washing up, Harriet lay down on the bed, but her mind was in turmoil.
She was happy that Griffin had returned safely.
What troubled her was Tristan.
Their relationship seemed to be getting worse and worse.
Was it really so hard to just live a good life together?
Harriet took a deep breath, trying to push away these messy thoughts, and closed her eyes to sleep.
The next morning.
Harriet hadn't gotten up yet when the doorbell rang.
Rhea went to answer it and saw an unfamiliar man standing outside. "May I ask who you are?"
"I'm Griffin Wallace, Harriet's friend."
"Mr. Wallace, Mrs. Lancaster hasn't gotten up yet."
"That's okay, I'll wait and have breakfast with her."
Rhea was hesitating about whether to let him in when she heard Harriet's voice behind her. "Griffin."
"Harriet."
"Come in quickly."
Rhea had no choice but to open the door and let him through.
"I brought you the sandwiches you love."
"Thank you."
The two ate together, chatting as they ate.
"Get your driver's license replaced as soon as possible."
"Okay." Griffin smiled. "When did you become so naggy?"
"Oh, give me your phone."
Griffin unlocked his phone and handed it to her.
Harriet operated her own phone for a bit, then picked up his phone and did something. "I've transferred some money to you. Use it for now, and let me know if you need more."
"Harriet, I have money."
"You just escaped back from Vesperia, how much money could you have? Don't be polite with me."
Griffin could only nod. "Okay, I'll listen to you."
"That's right." Harriet said, "I took two days off. After you finish your business, come back here for lunch. I have a lot more to talk to you about."
"Okay."
While out buying groceries, Rhea secretly called Tristan.
"Mr. Lancaster, a Mr. Wallace came to see Mrs. Lancaster early this morning. They seem to have a very good relationship. Not only did they have breakfast together, but Mrs. Lancaster also invited him for lunch."
Tristan's cold voice came from the other end. "So?"
Rhea froze.
What did he mean?
Rhea suddenly didn't know what to say. "If there's any special situation, I'll report to you promptly."
The next second, the call was disconnected.
Rhea was a bit confused.
Had she said something wrong?
This job was getting harder and harder!
When Rhea was preparing lunch, Griffin came back.
Harriet asked, "Griffin, what are your plans? What kind of work are you looking for?"
Griffin smiled. "Competition in Emberfall is fierce, and I have a five-year gap in my resume. How could I possibly compete with others?"
Harriet felt deeply sorry for him.
Griffin had been a genius since childhood and should have had an incredibly bright future, but this accident had cost him five precious years.
"Griffin, it's not too late." Harriet collected herself. "You're so smart. I believe no matter when you start over, your life can still be wonderful."
"Find a job first. With your learning ability, I'm sure you'll adapt to society quickly."
"Harriet, I'll arrange these things myself. You don't need to worry."
"Okay, I work at the clinic. You can come find me anytime."
"I know."
Harriet originally wanted to know more about Griffin's experiences over the years, but worried about bringing up bad memories, so she held back.
After resting at home for two days, once her foot injury had completely healed, Harriet went back to work.
Finnegan called. "Ms. Getty, didn't you always want to meet the owner of the skyscraper? He's hosting a dinner party this Sunday. I've reserved two invitations for you. You can attend with Ms. Flora Jenkins."
Harriet agreed immediately. "Thank you, Mr. Savoy. I'll be there on time."
Although she and Tristan were still fighting, she still wanted to go to the party to see if there was anything she could do for him.
"By the way, Mr. Savoy, Flora said she wants to treat us to dinner Friday night. Has she contacted you?"
"She has. I'll be there on time."
"See you Friday then."
"See you Friday."
Just after hanging up, Ian knocked and came in, smiling. "I heard from Rhea that you've been spending time with a young handsome guy lately?"
"Mr. Jones, why are you gossiping too?" Harriet laughed. "That's an old friend I lost touch with for many years. We just reunited recently, so we've met a few times."
"Does Mr. Lancaster have any objections?" Ian asked. "I heard that since he went back to your hometown with you, you two have been at odds?"
Harriet didn't deny it. "Because I know he's been deceiving me. Mr. Jones, do you know why he never let us examine him after his injury? Because he wasn't hurt in the kidneys at all, and there's nothing wrong with his sexual function either."
"Really?" Ian was shocked. "That's good news."
"But it's deception." Harriet pressed her lips together slightly.
"He probably did it to keep you by his side."
"I know, but he had many chances to tell me the truth later, and he didn't. He kept making me feel guilty and upset." Harriet lowered her eyes. "More importantly, he's my husband, but he doesn't treat my family as family. That's what I can't accept."
"Since I married him, I've always treated his family as my own, but I can't get the same treatment from him."
Ian said, "I've known Mr. Lancaster for quite a while. Though we haven't interacted much, I understand his personality somewhat."
"Maybe because he was born privileged, his empathy is quite weak. So what you're describing doesn't surprise me at all."
Harriet's nose tingled. "Tristan and I have been married for over three years, but it seems we've never really understood each other."
"Now that we're slowly getting to know each other, I've realized that getting married is easy, but getting along is hard. The adjustment period after really getting to know each other is the hardest part of marriage."
"But that's the necessary path of any marriage. Perhaps you two are destined to fall in love after marriage."
"But even if it's love after marriage, I'm the only one giving all the love." Harriet gave a bitter smile. "Can one-sided love really sustain a marriage?"
"Harriet, I've never been married, so I can't teach you how to manage a marriage. But I know that maintaining a relationship and a marriage is very difficult." Ian patted her shoulder.
