Chapter 196 Yearning for Love
Scarlett wanted to bargain with Ambrose, but he had already started walking forward, so she had no choice but to chase after him.
"I've already asked Ewan to keep an eye on things at the construction site. It won't be delayed."
Ambrose glanced at her sideways and said, "Is it right for you to put aside your own affairs for the sake of others' matters?"
Scarlett felt wronged in her heart. From now on, she would be restricted by him everywhere. Back then, she had jumped into another predicament just to get rid of Wesley. Had she done the right thing or the wrong thing?
Ambrose walked extremely fast. To catch up with him, Scarlett also walked quickly, but she was wearing high heels and wasn't watching where she was going. Suddenly, she stepped on a stone. Her shoe twisted, a sharp pain shot through her foot, and her leg gave way. Just as she was about to fall to the ground, Ambrose, beside her, reacted quickly, reaching out to catch her, preventing her from hitting the ground.
"Don't you know you're wearing high heels? How dare you walk so fast?" He yelled at her again.
Scarlett's foot hurt badly. She ignored his words and tried to break free from him while holding onto her suitcase with one hand.
"You've already twisted your ankle, and you still won't stay still."
"I can just hold onto the suitcase." She was very principled and insisted on keeping a certain distance from Ambrose.
Ambrose didn't force her and let go. Scarlett held onto the suitcase and tried to put weight on her foot, but as soon as she applied pressure, a piercing pain shot through. She quickly eased off.
Ambrose crouched in front of her, lifted her foot, and pressed on it.
Scarlett cried out.
Ambrose understood. "Looks like you've pulled a muscle. You need to go to the hospital."
Hearing this, Scarlett's heart sank. Now, even if Ambrose let her go, she couldn't make it to Luminous City.
Just then, Ewan and Ryder ran over. Learning that Scarlett had twisted her ankle, they both suggested she go to the hospital.
Ambrose stood up, and the next second, he bent down and picked her up. Scarlett quickly pushed him away. "Just help me walk."
"Can you walk?" Ambrose said coolly.
Scarlett was speechless. She really couldn't walk; even the slight effort she made just now hurt. She had to stop talking and let him carry her away.
Ewan watched the two of them, stunned. Actually, he'd heard rumors about them before, but this was the first time he'd seen them being intimate.
So the thing between Ambrose and Scarlett was real?
Suddenly, someone patted his shoulder. He quickly collected his thoughts and turned around to see Ryder carrying Scarlett's suitcase.
"Keep an eye on things at the construction site. Ms. Mellon's foot is injured, and she can't walk, so someone has to carry her. Let's just pretend we didn't see this little thing."
Ryder was actually reminding him. Ewan got the hint and nodded. Looking at the man and woman ahead with their inexplicable intimacy, and Ryder carrying the suitcase, he became even more certain about their relationship.
Up ahead, Scarlett felt very uncomfortable being carried by Ambrose. She'd said she didn't want to have anything to do with him, but in this situation, she couldn't distance herself even if she tried.
She felt incredibly frustrated. Why was everything so difficult?
Ambrose looked down at Scarlett, who was quiet in his arms. Seeing her looking down without saying anything, he spoke up.
"Does your foot hurt a lot?"
Scarlett, who was dying of frustration, looked up and glared at him angrily. "Of course it hurts. It's all your fault. If it weren't for you, this wouldn't have happened."
Being blamed, Ambrose wasn't angry. Instead, he seemed pleased, the corners of his lips curving up. "How is it my fault that you twisted your ankle?"
"How is it not your fault? Just now, when you saw me, you said wearing these shoes, be careful, there are stones everywhere. You were clearly cursing me."
For the first time, Ambrose experienced what it meant for a woman to be unreasonable. He said, "I was reminding you. That's wrong too?"
Scarlett was annoyed that she couldn't get rid of him, so she decided to be completely unreasonable and make him angry.
"That wasn't a reminder, you were cursing me. And you knew I was wearing these shoes, but you still walked so fast. You clearly wanted me to get hurt. You definitely wanted me to get hurt so I couldn't go to Luminous City."
Ambrose showed an indifferent attitude. "If that's what you want to think, there's nothing I can do about it."
"You're so cruel." Scarlett hatefully accused him.
This accusation was a bit heavy. He immediately stopped walking and looked down at her angry face in his arms. Scarlett looked up and met his emotionally unreadable eyes, feeling a bit scared again.
He looked at her once without reproach, but Scarlett felt something was off about his gaze, so she stopped talking. The two remained silent all the way to his car.
Once in the car, Scarlett immediately distanced herself from him, then took out her phone from her bag and sent a message to Finnian.
The message said: [Finnian, I've injured my foot and can't come over. Please tell Mr. Turner that I'll come once my foot heals. Please ask him to understand.]
Shortly after sending it, she received a reply.
Finnian told her to focus on recovering first, and they'd talk once she was better.
She put away her phone and leaned listlessly against the car window, not talking to Ambrose. Ryder was driving, while the two of them sat in the back.
Ambrose's car had a refrigerator. He took out some ice and applied it to her injured foot. The cool sensation reduced the burning pain. Only then did Scarlett look at him.
He was focused on icing her foot, his head slightly lowered. His handsome profile seemed coated with a layer of light, dazzling and noble.
Yet this noble man was now wholeheartedly taking care of her foot, his eyes looking at it as if it were some precious treasure. Her heart couldn't help but stir.
Before, when Wesley was pursuing her, he'd never treated her like this. To say she wasn't touched would be a lie. She'd once dreamed of love, hoped to be cared for like this with someone's full attention, with her in their eyes. But later, all those dreams were shattered, and she'd never dared to hope for such things again.
Now, Ambrose suddenly burst into her life and did what she had once dreamed of. She was confused; how should she face this?
He could take care of her like this, yet he was still entangled with Octavia. And he seemed unwilling to let her go. Were all men like this?
But no matter what he thought, she wouldn't respond.
Perhaps sensing Scarlett's gaze, Ambrose suddenly looked up and met her eyes. Their gazes intersected, and sparks of intimacy extended through the air.
"Why are you looking at me like that?" His low voice was seductive.
She looked away and turned her head, saying stubbornly, "Don't think that just because you're taking care of me like this, I'll agree to other things."
Ambrose suddenly moved closer to her, reached out to turn her face back, and looked at her intently. "Agree to what other things?"
She was forced to meet his gaze, moisture welling up in her eyes. "You know perfectly well what I mean."
"I don't know. You wanted to break things off with me, and I did as you wished. You wanted me to take my things away, and I took them. What else is there for you to agree to?"
Scarlett pressed her lips together tightly, just feeling angry. Seeing this, Ambrose's expression became serious. "What else are you angry about?"
"You're restricting me everywhere now. Don't think I don't know what you're up to. Do all you men like having several women around you?"
