Chapter 197 Explanation
Scarlett glared at Ambrose. Her accusations carried more concern compared to the coldness she showed last time when she wanted to break things off.
Ambrose loosened his grip on her face a bit, his serious expression softening slightly. "You already broke things off with me. What intentions could I possibly have?"
"If we're breaking up, then act like it," she said, feeling uncomfortable.
Last time she proposed to break up, he didn't make any effort to retain her. But when he turned around and saw her hugging Finnian, he said again that it wasn't up to her to decide to break up whenever she wanted.
His inconsistency made her feel like she'd gotten herself into trouble she couldn't shake off.
At this point, Ambrose's face darkened again as he said ominously, "Do you think just because you're injured, I won't do anything to you?"
Scarlett could tell the warning in his words, but she wasn't wrong. He had agreed quickly back then, but now she was in his car. If she said something he didn't like, there was no guarantee he wouldn't do something to her.
She just kept quiet, slapped his hand away, and silently turned around to lie softly against the seat.
With her back to him, her injured foot resting on his leg, this position made her long dress cling to her waist. Even with his jacket draped over her, it couldn't hide her alluring figure.
Ambrose's eyes darkened. He reached up to tug at the button below his collar, feeling irritated. Unable to contain himself, he asked about what bothered him most.
"In your heart, am I really that unimportant? Is that why you could so easily say you wanted to break up?"
Scarlett, resting her face on the back of her hands, froze. Was he important or not?
How should she put it?
Their relationship was that of friends with benefits. Could they even talk about who was more important?
In her twenty-something years of life, Wesley was once someone she thought was important. Later, that turned out to be a joke.
Ambrose started as a transactional relationship, later upgraded to friends with benefits. Should he be important?
At least right now, Scarlett wasn't sure if he was important or not.
But he could affect her mood, and Scarlett was certain of that.
"Speak!" Seeing her silence, Ambrose pressed her.
"Say what? You agreed quickly back then too. Neither of us can blame the other." Scarlett was really annoyed. Ambrose's agreement without hesitation back then bothered her too.
At these words, Ambrose's lips curved up. He leaned over, his voice low and husky as he asked, "You mind that I agreed?"
Now that he'd asked this question, should she admit it? But once she admitted it, she'd probably have an even harder time getting rid of him, so she denied it.
"Why would I mind? I'm just telling you, neither of us can blame the other."
Ambrose reached over to turn her body around so they were face to face. "You mind, but you don't dare admit it?"
"If that's what you want to think, there's nothing I can do." Scarlett simply stopped arguing and pushed against him.
Ambrose pressed down firmly on her body.
He said, "I have nothing to do with Octavia. If I wanted to have a relationship with her, I wouldn't have waited until now. As for not clarifying, it's because I'm investigating the truth about that night four years ago. So be good, I can't have any relationship with her at all."
After he finished speaking, Scarlett froze. Was he investigating the truth about that night four years ago? What truth?
Could it be that four years ago, he suspected Octavia had pulled some tricks behind the scenes?
But if he suspected it, why was he only investigating now? Why didn't he investigate back when he found out about the child?
She looked at Ambrose with doubt, but there was some softening in her eyes. He tightened his arms around her. "I have no reason to lie to you."
"What are you investigating?" She was much calmer now than before.
Ambrose said seriously, "Investigating whether that trap was set up by Octavia and her father, and what their real purpose was."
"You mean that night you were set up, it might have been a trap set by the Mitchell family father and daughter?" Scarlett was finally getting the picture.
Ambrose nodded truthfully. She sorted out the meaning of his words a little and roughly understood what he meant. If the truth was like this, then the father and daughter of the Mitchell family were really amazing. They could even think four years ahead and use a child to control Ambrose.
"Could they predict that you'd become the head of the Boleyn family?" She questioned again.
Ambrose looked at her bright, watery eyes, feeling desire stir. He lowered his head to kiss her, but she pushed his face away.
"Don't try to take advantage of me."
His chest vibrated with laughter. When the trembling stopped, he said lazily, "Whether or not they could predict it, their ambition has always existed."
Scarlett was skeptical. "Then why are you still working with Ulysses? You even put aside the bad blood between you two."
"This cooperation is only superficial. That's all I can say. Knowing too much won't do you any good. In short, remember that Octavia and I don't have an overt relationship."
After Ambrose finished speaking, he stared at her intently. For a moment, Scarlett didn't know whether to believe him or not.
If he was just making up an excuse, then as he said, if he wanted something with Octavia, he wouldn't have waited until now.
Could he really be investigating what happened back then?
Scarlett's troubled heart was now even more confused.
"Alright, you've been fighting with me for so long, it's time to settle down." He held her tightly, coaxing her.
Scarlett glanced at him coolly. "Who's been fighting with you? I'm serious."
At these words, Ambrose's face darkened again. "Trying to make me angry again?"
Hearing this, Scarlett knew he was about to lose his temper again. Right now, she didn't want to fight with him anymore. She turned her head away, wanting to lie back down on the seat, but he was holding her too tightly - she couldn't break free, no matter how hard she struggled.
"Let go first."
"I haven't held you in so long, let me hold you for a bit." Ambrose started acting shamelessly.
Seeing she couldn't break free, she was too lazy to confront him. She just stayed quietly in his arms. It wasn't like he hadn't held her before. Right now, she needed to sort out her feelings first.
Even if what he said was true, could they possibly be together in the future?
No, it's impossible. Cody made it very clear. If we don't cut off the relationship now, it will be more troublesome in the future.
What should she do?
Scarlett was torn, right up until Ambrose carried her into the hospital, when she finally broke free from these thoughts.
Her foot was indeed sprained, but not seriously. She couldn't walk on it for the time being, didn't need a cast, and didn't need to be hospitalized.
After the hospital visit, Ambrose took her back to Lakeside Garden. When Yara saw that Scarlett was injured, she assumed Ambrose was responsible and didn't give him a pleasant look.
When Hayden heard Scarlett was injured, he quickly had his bodyguard take him to Lakeside Garden. As soon as he entered, he went straight to Scarlett's bedroom, asking after her with great concern and care.
Scarlett's confused heart was now soothed by Hayden.
After Ambrose arrived, he didn't leave. Seeing him not leaving, Scarlett urged him to go, but Ambrose kept finding excuses and just wouldn't leave.
At dinner, he did take very good care of her.
After dinner, Scarlett said, "Since you say your engagement to Octavia is fake, then on the surface, you still need to keep your distance from me. Otherwise, you won't fool her. Until you find out the truth, let's not see each other much!"
The topic had circled back to getting Ambrose to stop coming to Lakeside Garden to see her.
