Chapter 150 The Return of the Talbot Family

Chapter 150 The Return of the Talbot Family

Rhys chewed on his snack and mumbled, "Ms. Boleyn, this exam is super important to me!"

Amelia turned the practice book to the next page and pointed to another question, "Which part don't you understand?" She noticed Rhys's nervousness, a stark contrast to his usual mischievous self.

"These, these, these parts aren't very familiar! Ms. Boleyn, you have to help me cram!" Rhys swallowed his snack, his tone almost pleading.

"Why are you suddenly taking it so seriously?" Amelia was a bit curious. Rhys's grades, while not top-notch, were definitely not bad, and it was rare to see him so anxious.

Rhys scratched his head, a bit embarrassed, "My grandparents and my parents are coming back for a family reunion. It's a big family event because my great-grandparents are too old to travel back from abroad, so it's especially grand this time."

Amelia's heart skipped a beat, her fingers slightly curling. The Talbot family reunion, does that mean Dorian's parents? Do they know about her divorce from Dorian? She had met Dorian's parents once during their marriage, and although it was just a brief encounter, what if they recognized her? She tried to maintain a calm expression, but inside, she was in turmoil.

"When are they coming back?" Amelia asked as calmly as possible, trying to hide her inner unease.

"In about half a month." Rhys flipped through the practice book, completely unaware of Amelia's distress.

Amelia responded softly, but her thoughts drifted far away. Half a month was enough time for many things to happen. She needed to think carefully about how to handle the upcoming situation.

The room fell silent, with Rhys diligently working, the sound of his pen scratching on the practice book.

Amelia sat beside him, seemingly calmly explaining the questions, but her mind was elsewhere.

She had just blurted out a wrong answer to a simple Pythagorean theorem question, luckily Rhys caught it.

"Ms. Boleyn, you're acting a bit strange today." Rhys put down his pen and looked at Amelia in confusion.

Amelia forced a smile, "Am I? Maybe I didn't sleep well last night."

"Are you nervous?" Rhys asked tentatively, "Because my grandparents are coming back?"

Amelia's heart tightened, but she remained composed, "Why would I be? I'm just thinking about some things."

Rhys scratched his head, "My family is very nice, don't be nervous. Even if you're with Uncle Dorian, they won't make things difficult for you." He stammered, not fully understanding adult matters, but trying his best to comfort her.

Amelia felt a mix of emotions. Rhys's comfort made her feel both touched and helpless. Touched by his kindness, helpless about her relationship with Dorian, which felt like a ticking time bomb.

She took a deep breath, pushing down her chaotic thoughts, "Don't worry, I'm not nervous. Let's continue."

For the rest of the time, Amelia forced herself to focus, seriously explaining the questions. Rhys also put away his playful side and concentrated on studying. The room was filled only with the sound of the pen on paper and their occasional conversation.

After what seemed like a long time, they finally finished the last question. Rhys stretched, "Ms. Boleyn, you're my savior! Now I feel confident about the exam!"

Amelia smiled, packing up the practice book, "Go play, but don't be too tense!"

"Okay!" Rhys bounced out of the room.

Amelia watched his figure disappear at the door and gently closed it. The room instantly fell silent.

She took out her phone and dialed Isolde's number.

"Isolde, can you talk?" Amelia's voice carried a hint of fatigue.

"What's wrong? You don't sound right." Isolde keenly sensed Amelia's distress.

"The Talbot family, the Talbot family members are coming back." Amelia paused, her voice trembling slightly.

There was a moment of silence on the other end, "When?"

"In half a month, for a family reunion."

"A family reunion." Isolde's voice also grew heavy, "What are you going to do?"

"I don't know." Amelia's voice was almost desperate, "I don't know what to do."

"Don't be afraid, Amelia," Isolde's voice became firm, "I'll come get you, you can stay at my place for a while."

Isolde's words brought some comfort to Amelia. She took a deep breath, trying to calm herself.

"Thank you, Isolde. But I'll ask Dorian first."

"Alright. See what he says. Call me anytime if you need anything."

After hanging up, Amelia put her phone back in her pocket. She leaned against the wall, slowly standing up. Her leg injury wasn't fully healed, making it difficult to walk.

She supported herself with a crutch, walking step by step towards Dorian's room. Each step felt like walking on a knife's edge, filling her with anxiety.

Reaching Dorian's room, Amelia took a deep breath and knocked on the door.

"Come in." Dorian's deep voice came from inside.

Amelia pushed the door open and walked in. Dorian was sitting at his desk, working on some documents. He looked up at her, slightly frowning, "What's wrong?"

Amelia walked up to him and stood still, "The Talbot family, your family is coming back, right?"

Dorian put down the document in his hand, leaned back in his chair, and looked at her calmly, "Yes, in half a month."

He noticed Amelia's slightly pale face and understood. She was indeed worried about this.

"Are you worried about our relationship being discovered?" Dorian's tone was indifferent, revealing no emotion.

Amelia didn't speak, which was a silent admission.

Dorian chuckled lightly, "Don't worry, they're just coming back for the reunion, they won't stay long. Just treat it normally."

His words made Amelia feel a bit relieved, but she still felt uneasy.

"After Rhys's exam, I'll move back to Serenity Retreat." Amelia calmly stated her plan.

Dorian raised an eyebrow, a hint of surprise flashing in his eyes, but he quickly regained his composure, "Alright."

Amelia's gaze unintentionally fell on the piles of documents on Dorian's desk, each stack thick like small mountains, occupying most of the desk. She frowned slightly, feeling a bit of pity.

"Do you have to handle all of these?" Amelia asked softly, her tone carrying a hint of concern.

Dorian glanced at the piles of documents, his tone calm, "Part of it." He pulled out a document and handed it to Amelia, "Can you check this one for me? The data seems off."

Amelia took the document and sat on the sofa, carefully reading through it. The data was dense and overwhelming. She meticulously cross-checked each page, her frown deepening. Many of the data points were clearly mismatched, some even completely off, which was baffling.

Closing the document, Amelia looked up, her eyes filled with disbelief, "These data discrepancies are severe." She couldn't understand, "People in the Talbot Group shouldn't make such basic mistakes."

Dorian chuckled lightly, a hint of sarcasm in his tone, "Most of these people are placed by the Talbot family's branches." He leaned back in his chair, his fingers tapping rhythmically on the desk, "I've been trying to avoid nepotism in the company, but some people always find ways to exploit loopholes."

He paused, then continued, "For the sake of family balance, I have to turn a blind eye to some of them."

His tone was emotionless, but Amelia could sense the hidden frustration and a trace of coldness in his words.
